FORD SALES SHOW
JUMP OF 133,095
Sales reports from the 34 American branches of the Ford Motor Co. show that over a million Ford cars and trucks were sold at retail during the first six months of 1924. The actual figure is 1,036,-978, which exceeds the total retail sales for the same period in 1922 by 133,095—an average gain of 22,182 sales per month.
A comparison between Ford sales in 1924 and 1923 not only indicates a remarkable increase in the country's buying power but also shows that this growth continues month by month. In every instance the monthly sales in 1924 have shown a substantial increase over the corresponding month in 1923. In June they reached 170,-747 which was approximately 10,-000 ahead of June sales in the preceding year.
These figures are for retail sales in the United States alone and do not take into consideration the sales made by foreign Ford branches and associated companies, the majority of which assembled cars from American made parts.
Perhaps the most encouraging sign of the times lies in the fact that these sales have been spread very evenly throughout the country and indicate a general prosperity that is not confined to any particular section.

FRENCH AVIATOR GIVEN TITLE OF GREATEST FLIER
Peltier d'Oisy.
Lieutenant Peltier d'Oisy of the French flying corps is being acclaimed the wonder flier of the world. He has already established two remarkable records since he embarked on one of the most dramatic flights in aviation history, on which he seeks to fly to Japan and, through record achievements, demonstrate French air supremacy. He flew from Villa Coublay, France, to Karachi, India, in 38½ hours flying time, stopping only at Bucharest in Roumania.

DOUGHNUT TIRES
NEW CAR FEATURE
Unlike that of many other cars, the Hudson's steering ratio has been adapted to the doughnut tires that have replaced the cords, according to Earl Farris, branch manager of H. R Grove & Co., Hudson and Essex distributors. These full balloons make the braking control of the Hudson, always notable, more complete than ever.
The advantages in the way of anti-skidding, greater riding comfort and preservation of the car generally, due to the new tires, also should be emphasized, says the firm.
The gear ratio of the Hudson also has been altered and ball bearings put into the steering gear. The machine as a whole is no heavier.
The new model of the Essex is considerably heavier than the previous one, including the frame. The motor is larger, enabling more power and speed. The full balloon tires give the usual advantages.
The new coach models of both cars are on display and the other models will be exhibited shortly.
New Tire Molds
Need With Balloons
That vulcanizers will have a heavy added burden with the introduction of doughnut tires, due to the need of purchasing new models for re-treading, etc., is the declaration of Guy B. Daniels, local Brunswick tire distributor who mentions this fact as one of several why most distributors are taking on the new tires mainly on orders.

Bargains Do Exist In Local Markets
Turton's certified motor car market not only purchases used cars outright, but takes cars on consignment and sells them for owners, one of Manager Herb Davis' men reminds the public.
Occasionally an owner is in a hurry for his cash for one reason or another, and by paying "spot" it is possible to get some unusual bargains.
Another way of getting a "bar-gain" is for a purchaser who is mechanically capable to pick a car which he can repair himself at much less expense.
The pedigrees given with cars makes this all the more possible.
FRIDAY LUCKY DAY FOR LITTLE GIANT
Friday was Napoleon's lucky day. The 25rd of April, 1776, when he entered the military school of Brienne, was Friday. He was named Premier the 13th day of December, 1799, which was also Friday, and named Emperor Friday, the 18th of May, 1804.
Not so lucky, perhaps, was his departure for Saint Helena on the 11th of August, 1815. It was on Friday also. His tomb was given over to France by England on another Friday. Out of five only one Friday was marked by unfavorable circumstances.

These molds are highly expensive and must be obtained in addition to the others, making two sets of them.
The merits of doughnut tires and the scientific advance they represent are not denied by Daniels, but until the other tires are displaced the problem mentioned will not down.
A Little Talk on Thrift
By S. W. STRAUS (President American Society for Thrift.)
Are the children of America learning thrift?
The best answer to this question may be gained from a study of the school savings bank system of our country.
A recent survey of these institutions indicated that during the last school year the number of depositors in school banks was close to 3,000,000 with deposits in excess of $12,000,000 and balances in school banks of more than $15,000,000.
These figures are only approximate inasmuch as many school bank systems make no official reports, but they are of sufficient completeness to reveal the rapid growth taking place in this department of thrift education.
Generally speaking the increase in depositors and deposits is at the rate of 25 percent. Steady increases are found both in the percentage of depositors to pupils enrolled as well as in the average amount of individual deposits, thus showing that the practices of thrift among American school children are becoming more intensive.
It is estimated that there are now between 7000 and 8000 school banks successfully operating throughout the country located in some 500 cities and towns.
While this gratifying progress is being made, the start in the development of our school savings banks has only begun. If all available children were enrolled in the school bank system of the country the number of deposits would be in the neighborhood of $25,000,-ooo instead of $32,ooo,-ooo.
In the development of school banks, one important fact should be kept constantly in mind name-

BABY BORN DEAD
OKLAHOMA CITY, July 26.
Miss Ceccilia Miller's baby was born dead, and the pretty 25-year-old girl arrested as she alighted from a train in Oakland, Calif., yesterday, will be charged with a misdemeanor, police here stated today.
Dr. J. A. Coley, who made a postmortem examination of the baby, which was checked in a locker at the Santa Fe station here last Monday, stated there was no evidence that the baby had ever breathed.
The girl told Oakland authorities that she did not know whether the child was alive or dead when she swathed it in cotton and placed it in the suit case, where it was found at the station.
Miss Miller was employed as a clerk at the stat ecapitol building. The mother was a guest at a local hotel and without medical attention when the baby was born Monday afternoon. The girl is said to have left that evening.

CRUMBLING SHORE DOOMS LIGHTHOUSE
WILMINGTON./Del., July 26. Henlopen Lighthouse, which has guided ships by Delaware Bay since 1764, faces destruction at any moment, according to Captain John C. Gray, keeper of the light.
It is the second oldest lighthouse in America and was constructed by the British to direct ships to the Colonies, but was partly destroyed by British troops who landed there in 1777.
Originally built 1400 feet from the short line, only 31 feet of land lie between it and the water now. Captain Gray said he had seen a good storm take away more than that at one sweep and predicted that "one more good nor easter" would end the historic landmark's career.
MAPLE SAUCE
A hot maple sauce with chopped nuts to pour over your pudding or vanilla ice cream is quickly prepared.
Boll two cups of maple syrup and one-half cup of cream together to the thread stage, add chopped toasted almonds and serve while still hot.
One-quarter cup of condensed milk and one-quarter cup of water may be substituted for the cream if desired.
This quantity will serve about eight people.
