STORM BOTHERS
BIG DIRIGIBLE
LAKEHURST, N. J., July 25.
After sailing around over this city most of the day because of unfavorable winds, the giant dirigible Shenandoah landed at 5:30 o'clock this afternoon and entered her hangar a few minutes later.
The landing of the ship was not possible until the high winds had died down.
LAKEHURST, N. J., July 25.
After twice being brought to the ground on its return to the air station here after a successful 500 mile test flight, the navy's big dirigible Shenandoah again took to the air shortly before noon in an effort to fly around a storm approaching Lakehurst.
The first time the airship was brot down a 14-mile cross-hangar wind made it dangerous to attempt to put the craft in its hangar. The commander went aloft and hovered over the field until daybreak, when the vessel again was brot to the ground.
A strong cross-hangar wind was still blowing, however, and the ground crew, augmented by several hundred civilians and air station attaches, held the ship fast for several hours in hope of it dying down, when an attempt would be made to house the ship.
Decision to take the air a second time was influenced by weather conditions, according to Commander Lansdowne, who explained the Shenandoah would be placed at her mooring mast, were it not for predicted thunderstorms. He explained the mooring mast "grounds" the ship and makes it more susceptible to being struck by lightning.
SCITUATE, Mass., July 25.
The naval observation balloon which broke away from its mooring at the Lakehurst air station early today, is probably lost.
The big ship sailed out to sea here today on a shift of the wind. Thousands of spectators witnessed the undirected flight of the ship.

WOMEN SEEKING TO OBTAIN COAL LAND
WASHINGTON, July 25.—Katie Roberts Wilson of Tucson, Ariz., and Minnie Marie Wilson of Seattle, Wash., today filed suits for mandamus in the district supreme court, against Hubert Work, secretary of the interior, and William Spry, commissioner of the general land office, to compel issuance to them of patents for certain coal lands in the Vancouver district of the state of Washington.
Both petitioners deny charges that they were seeking the land patents in the interest of an Oregon coal corporation, but said they made the declarations in their own interests.

GOES TO HANGINGS FOR DIVERSION
LONDON, July 25—Britain possesses an old lady, resident in Somerset, who has just celebrated her 100th birthday and has been entertaining her compatriots with her recollections.
Mrs. Sarah Bloomfield married her husband, a shepherd, just 80 years ago. His income was eight shillings—less than two dollars—per week. But the farmer who employed him gave him a raise of another shilling weekly on condition that he did the milking for the farm on Sundays. But they were prosperous in their way and perfectly happy.
One of their rare diversions was a trip to Taunton to see public executions outside the jail. Mrs. Bloomfield remembers four people being hanged at one time. One of them, a woman, was hanged in a sunbonnet which had been specially presented to her for the occasion by her friends.
You can't get rid of trouble by trying to drown it; the best way is to lead it out into the woods and lose it.

OUTFALL SEWER CONFERENCE HERE
The applications of Buena Park and La Haira to join the other city communities in the joint outfall sewer will be considered at a meeting here tonight of the trustees and other officials of Anaheim, Orange, Fullerton and Santa Ana. The meeting will open at 7:30 in the Anaheim city council chamber, and the two applicants are expected to be represented.
According to City Manager J.W. Price, there is no insuperable obstacle, in the grades to be encountered, to the admission of either town. Buena Park would have the more serious problem in being compelled to use a pump, but the expense involved would not be onerous. Pumping would always be required, however, unless aurdensome sum were spent, levelling grades.
The routes to be taken by the two sewer connections would depend upon distance, grades etc. Buena Park naturally would connect with the Fullerton connection sewer at Orangethorpe and Suclid-aves.

These invitations should be issued by unit commanders and the local mobilization committee in conformity with their mutual agreement.
Such action may not be expedient in some localities and should not be undertaken in any territory without the approval of the local mobilization committee. These committees should be kept fully informed as to the personnel desired, the units the men are to join, and the time and place of rendezvous. There will be no objection to a surplus of personnel secured, and without regard to uniform and equipment, citizens volunteering for the day should be incorporated in military units for parades or other demonstrations.

BILLY WHISKERS
BY FRANCES TREBO MONTGOMERY
Stubby had tumbled into an old well and there found Billy.
"How in the world did you get here?" he demanded.
"Same way you did! It took a reader and here I am! I have sailed my head nearly off calling to you and Button to come to my rescue, but not a sound could I hear. Somehow or other my voice did not seem to carry."
"We certainly are in a pretty pickle! Lost in an abandoned well on a lake shore with no habitation within a quarter of a mile. This will be our tomb unless some one chances to pass this way soon, and the chances are that no one will pass this way for weeks."
"Where can that cat be?" asked Billy.
"It sounds to me as if he too was in a hole or shut up somewhere and cannot get out."
"Yes, where can he be?" echoed stubby.
"First we hear his voice, then we don't hear it. It sounds good way off at that. Say, Billy, think I can see a way out. You stand up on your hind legs and I will run up your back and see if can't jump out of this well. It isn't more than eight feet deep and when you stand up you must be about six or seven feet tall."
"Yes, I should think I would measure that. But how are you to get room to get a running start?"
"I can't do that. I shall just have to climb up your leg by pulling myself, holding onto your hair and digging my claws into your back."
"Thanks! That sounds fine for me, I am sure!"
"Well isn't it better than stay-after all."
