WEDNESDAY, JULY 23, 1924 RADIO TO MAKE SHORT SPEECHES DARK HARBOR, ISLEBORO, Maine, July 23.—The entrance of Robert M. LaFollette, independent presidential candidate, into the political arena, was furnished John W. Davis today with food for mental contemplation as the democratic presidential candidate continued compiling advance notes for his acceptance speech, amid the tranquil surroundings of Seven Hundred Acre Island here. Homer S. Cummings, Demo, national committeeman from Conn., visited Davis and they talked over the general campaign. It was learned that the subject of "Battling Bob" underlined a good portion of the conversation. Commenting on his acceptance speech, Davis said he was going to "lean to mercy," in the address, depending on his campaign speeches to controvert the final candidates. The democratic standard bearer declared the radio would change American political campaigns and was going to make speeches shorter. The nominee's isolation appears to have had its best days. MECHANICAL BREATH-SNIFFER USED AS A SURE TEST FOR INEBRIATION The "metabular" at work. The guy who takes a drink hasn't got a chance. If the stuff does not kill him police can use the "metabular" on him and prove that he is inebriated and ram him into jail for violation of the prohibition law. The "metabular" is a device which San Francisco doctors who devise it say is a sure test for inebriation. It suffits the breath and registers what it discovers therein. MORTON MENU HINT Breakfast Oranges Bran Flakes Cream Bacon with Eggs Whole Wheat Bread and Butter Coffee Milk Dinner Ham and Biscuits Mashed Potatoes Cottage Cheese Lettuce with Cream Dressing Tea Cherry Pie Milk Supper Creamed Rice Rolls Butter Jam Spring Onions Radishes Molasses Cookies Tea Milk TODAY'S RECIPES Ham with Biscuits — Cut one and one-half pounds of ham (smoked) in small pieces and put in skillet and fry slowly until brown. Turn off the fat, cover with water and cook for one hour. When done add water enough to make three pints, thicken for gravy, turn into baking dish; make baking powder biscuits, lay on top and bake in hot oven. This recipe does not call for salt, as the ham is generally salty enough to season it. Lettuce with Cream Dressing — To one-half pound of lettuce add one-half cup sour cream, one-quarter cup vinegar, three tablespoons sugar and one-half teaspoon salt. Mix and pour on lettuce, mixing with a fork until lettuce is slightly wilted. Molasses Cookies — Take one cup sugar (brown), one cup shortening, one-half teaspoon salt, one cup molasses, one cup boiling water, three eggs, one teaspoon soda dissolved in water, one teaspoon ginger, two teaspoons baking powder, five cups sifted flour. They also may be used for simple puddings by buttering the bread, cutting layers of the buttered bread and berries or other fruit in a baking dish. Pour a custard over this and bake. In making your preserves and relishes for next winter's use it is well to bear in mind that there is a rule for the serving of certain kinds of relish with certain meats. Of course this is no hard and fast rule but in all probability it was found sometime that a certain relish or jelly was just the flavor needed to supplement the taste of the main dish so some one made a note of that and that particular relish was always thereafter served with that kind of dish. With beef, for instance, is usually served one of the following: Tomato catsup, chili sauce, pickled onions, mustard pickles, beet pickles, mixed pickles, apple chutney, pepper and onion relish, cucumber relish, tomato relish and plum jelly. With lamb or mutton: Beet relish, chow chow, red currant jelly, black currant jelly, green grape jelly, apple mint jelly. CREAM OF SO. CAL, AMATEURS TEE OFF LOS ANGELES, July 23.—The cream of So.
