Anaheim This Edition Issued W RADIO AIDS SALES OF PHONOGRAPH The radio and phonograph are two different musical instruments, and neither is hurting the sales of the other, according to a leading dealer here. If anything, the radio is helping the older instrument. The grand opera stars aren't singing free over the radio, and the phonograph offers the only opportunity for the masses of people to hear them, according to this merchant. The same thing is true of the best orchestras. The phonograph also enables the individual to pick the selection he himself prefers and to use it again and again. He can hear it first and decline to buy if he doesn't like it. Furthermore, the phonograph reproduces as the radio cannot as yet, and it is doubtful whether the latter ever will surpass the former in faithful reproduction of the original voice or instrument. The phonograph now—any of them made—provides a loud speaker for the radio, into which it can be installed. A cabinet designed for the radio only now is being made. Standard makes of phonograph sell at practically the same prices as they did during and even before the war. And they are made better than ever before. Two or three well-known instruments might be named whose tone qualities have never been so fine and appear acutely. UKULELE, HAWAIAN GUITAR LEAD SALES What's new in the musical instrument business? Lots of things! The ukulele and Hawaiian guitar are selling better than they ever have before. Pianos, mainly in upright and baby grand models, are in just as much demand as ever, in spite of the competition of player pianos and the like—even because of such rivalry, perhaps. The violin and other stringed instruments cannot be made as successfully by machine as by hand, although more good hand-made violins are made now than ever before. It is still as true as ever that a finely hand-made violin is more valuable the older it grows. Sheet music, giving the songs of reues of one sort or another, Follies, etc., continues to sweep the country, and not a day passes when a new song doesn't reach the retailers. Most of this stuff doesn't last more than 30 days. The fox trot is the leader, as it has been for years. Sales of standard songs like "Old Kentucky Home," published at first as a few of many popular airs of uncertain quality, are selling better even than they did originally. QUIZ OFFICER OVER MYSTERY SHOOTING SAN FRANCISCO, July 23.—William Brady, 23, is painfully injured with a bullet hole in his shoulder today and police are questioning George Carroll, 30, special police officer, following a mysterious shooting near the Carroll home early today. Brady had been playing cards with Mr. and Mrs. Carroll, according to police, earlier in the evening. The injured man was unable to see his assailant because of the darkness, he told the police. A closed fist is seldom governed by an open mind.
