JACOBS Out with next Sunday Times THE PLAIN DEALER, ANAHEIM, CALIF. PICK LA FOLLETTE RUNNING MATE WASHINGTON, July 18.—In a quiet seclude 1 room atop the Machinists building here the national committee of the party for political progressive action met today to select Sen. Robert M. LaFollette's vice presidential running mate. LaFollette himself did not attend the session but was kept constantly advised at his capitol office of all that transpired. Sixteen candidates representing farm, labor and progressive groups all over the country were before the conferences. From this list, all said to be acceptable to LaFollette, the Wisconsin Senator's running mate must be chosen. Louis D. Brandels, associate justice of the supreme court, admittedly was the heaviest favorite with the committee, his following being greatly augmented when word was received in the LaFollette camp that Brandels' probably would accept if the position were offered him. The it was stoutly insisted that LaFollette was keeping "hands off" in the vice-presidential selection, every member of the committee expressed full willingness to back any candidate that the nominee preferred. So far LaFollette has not made known his personal choice, William H. Johnston, chairman of the committee declared. Serious doubt was expensed that the committee would be able to name its vice presidential choice today. Johnston said the plans called first for the committee to cut down the list to three or four names and then consult LaFollette. CONSIDER LATEST LEGAL WRINKLE LEARN SO. CALIF. POSITION JULY 25 LOS ANGELES, July 18.—So Calif.'s position concerning the proposed merger of the El Paso and Southwestern railway lines with the So. Pac. system will be determined July 25, at a conference of civic organization representatives and railroad officials under the auspices of the C. of C. Possibility of the So. Pac. constructing a new main line to the east by way of Phoenix and other features of the merger which is now before the inter state commerce commission for approval will be discussed. The conference will probably be the last of a series being held at various points on the So. Pac and E. P. and S. W. lines. One was held at El Paso last week, another at Tucson yesterday and a third will take place at Phoenix tonight. UNIFORM ATTIRE FOR F. H. S. GIRLS Girls of the Pullerton Union high school have adopted a neat uniform, according to announcement of L. H. Plummer, principal of the school. The skirt will be of dark blue serge with inch and a half box plaits and hem 2 to 4 inches deep. The middles are of white twill jean trimmed in linen tape. The freshmen will wear green ties; the sophomores, red ties; the juniors, blue ties, and the seniors, black ties. The style of tie is left to a committee which will have them on sale at the book store in the high school this fall. SUBDIVISIONS CUT TILLABLE LANDS By CHARLES J. GRiffin (of Charles O. Middleton Co.) Thoughtful people throughout So. Calif. are realizing that the subdivision of garden lands suburban to the large and small cities has not only greatly reduced the amount of land that produces food for the increasing population. Gathering the intricate maze of scientific conclusions which the corps of alienists have reached after long and involved examinations of the two young millionaire's sons who killed for a thrill, these highly technical deductions, the defense believes, focus toward a theory that the kidnaping and killing could never have been conceived or accomplished by one of the boys acting alone. It took the two working together with an affinity of their alleged abnormal or subnormal minds to do it. Thus, "folie a deux" or the follies of two as a basis of defense, if used in the Leopold-Loeb trial, may come to be as famous as the numerous "dementia Americana" in the Thaw case. Attorney Clarence Darrow chief defense counsel, admitted today that reports from the alienists "tended to support such a theory." Both defendants, it was said today, must appear in court on Monday before Judge Caverly, when Darrow makes his formal motion for appointment of a sanity commission. The motion will be bitterly fought by the state's attorney since granting of it would automatically eliminate trial for the crime unless the boys were declared sane. Special guards will be stationed about the courtroom Monday in anticipation of the crowds expected to flock into the county building to get their first glimpse of the defendants. Judge Caverly ordered today that no juveniles be admitted either at Mondays hearing or at the coming trial. With 65,000 acres of cotton on the American side and 140,000 acres under cultivation in Mexico, the valley growers expect new records to be set for production this season. While all of the cotton is in excellent shape, the fields on the Mexican side, altho planted late, are in the finest condition in the history of the cotton industry in this section. Water is plentiful and no pests have been reported, growers asserted. Acala and Meebane seed have been used entirely in the Imperial valley this year and higher yields per acre are expected as a result, it was stated. BELIEVE MAN DIES IN GANGSTER WAR CHICAGO, July 18.—Gangland's port of missing men—the stretches of lonely roads and wooded hills southwest of this city which police say provide the favorite routes for beer and liquor caravans—today revealed another murder mystery, when the body of an unidentified man, two bullet wounds thru the neck, was discovered by a farmer boy driving a cow home over a little used by road. The spot where the body lay is less than a mile from where the body of John Duffy, alias Daugherty, Philadelphia gangster, was found last February. Police believe the man to have been a victim of a battle between rival gangs of beer runners, not probably in the dead of the night. A coroner's examination revealed the man also had suffered fractures of both arms and one shoulder. All marks which might lead to his identification had been removed from his clothing. We toll and we struggle. But it's hard to get loose. VISIONS CUT ILLABLE LANDS CHARLES J. GRIFFIN Les O. Middleton (Co.) foul people throughout are realizing that the of garden lands suthe large and small not only greatly reduced t of land that produces the increasing population, but that each acre subdivided will soon be occupied with four or five families that must be fed. Is it any wonder that people are turning to the fertile valleys for available lands to supply the wants that cannot help but come? In the sale of Victoria Farms, large and fertile, amply watered, we believe that our office is answering the question of where future thousands will secure their foodstuff. Vegetables, fruits and berries grow abundantly and prolifically on this land and now for the first time it is offered in small parcels. Located directly between San Bernardino and Redlands, boulevards make access easy. Street cars, and railroads cross the property. Try a Classified Ad for results.
