OIL PRODUCTION OFF 28,225,000
The production of oil in California for the first half of 1923 was 118,113,000 barrels compared with 146,338,069 barrels for the last half of 1923, a decrease of 28,225,000 barrels. The average daily production at the first of 1924 was 700,300 barrels declining to 619,500 barrels on July 1 and shows a steady but gradual decline from the peak of production which occurred during the fall of 1923.
While the production decline of the state has been gradual the decline of the three prolific fields, Santa Fe Springs, Long Beach and Huntington Beach, which produced a large proportion of the oil, has been rather precipitous, but this was offset by additional development of good wells in the Torrance field, discovery of the Dominguez field with its large producers, extension of the eastern edge of Buen Visto Hills, Kern-co. into highly productive territory, and the resumption of closed production in the older fields of the state.
Consumption also declined and more rapidly than production with the result that storage increased from about 92,000,000 barrels on January 1, 1924, to about 100,000,000 barrels at the end of June. The unexpected decrease in consumption was due to various causes, among them being decreased demand for fuel oil by the largest consumers, the railroads, decreased demand for gasoline resulting from the hoof and mouth disease in California, decreased demand for gasoline east of the Rocky Mountains due to weather conditions and to the continued
DEER FOUND DEAD OF HOOF DISEASE
SACRAMENTO, July 18. Discovery of a dead deer near Sonora showing lesions of foot and mouth disease today caused Dr. U. G. Houck, chief of the federal forces combating the live stock scourge, to order an investigation to determine whether deer and other wild game in Stanislaus national forest. Tuolomne-co., are afflicted with the disease and likely to carry it into other sections of the state.
The infected deer found near Sonora is the only case on record in the United States of antler animals contracting the disease, altho similar cases have been reported in European countries.
The foot and mouth disease situation in the state generally is considered very satisfactory but federal and state officials frankly admit that spread of the plague among deer would have disastrous results.
Operatives of the W. S. biological survey, the state fish and game commission and the division of animal industry will co-operate in Tuolomme-co. and the inquiry will be prosecuted under the personal direction of Dr. J. P. Iverson, chief of the latter bureau.
"The public may be assured that if the deer in the neighborhood where we are now eradicating the disease in Tuolomme-co are found to be infected that no measures will be spared to protect the industry even if it becomes necessary to exterminate the deer in that region," said Dr. Houck in announcing the investigation.

more rapidly than production with the result that storage increased from about 92,000,000 barrels on January 1, 1924, to about 100,000,000 barrels at the end of June. The unexpected decrease in consumption was due to various causes, among them being decreased demand for fuel oil by the largest consumers, the railroads, decreased demand for gasoline resulting from the hoof and mouth disease in California, decreased demand for gasoline east of the Rocky Mountains due to weather conditions and to the continued ever-production of oil in the Mid-Continent fields. The last two factors no doubt account for the fact that the export of California oil to eastern and Gulf ports was 6,728,000 barrels less during the first half of 1924 than during the previous six months. This amount accounts for practically all the storage increase in the state during the first half of this year.
Oil field operations reported week ending July 12, show 24 new well started, compared with 22 previous week; 9 in Torrance, 2 in Long Beach, 2 in Montebello, 1 in Dominguez, 4 in Los Angeles-co, 1 in Santa Barbara-co, 4 in Kern-co, and 1 in Yolo-co. The total new wells this year is 837, compared with 812 at same date last year.

BILLY WHISKERS
BY FRANCES TREGO MONTGOMERY
You remember the chums had stolen some food from the cook and had run off down the road to eat it.
"Gee!" exclaimed Stubby, "this steak is the best thing I have had to eat in a fat goose's age."
"Yum! Yum!" replied Button. "It can't beat this chop for tenderness and juiciness."
"Nor my head lettuce. It is as sweet as sugar and as cold as ice. Just dote on cold, crisp lettuce. The colder and more crisp, the better. But I am afraid that cook will have an apoptotic fit if he isn't careful, the way he was waving his arms and carrying on. Excitement such as that is very bad for a fat old cook of 40."
"Hark! I hear an auto coming from the roadhouse. We better get back farther in the bushes and hide until it passes. They might be after us," said Stubby.
But they were not pursuers, but only two young fellows chatting and laughing over the dismay of the cook, for he had called to them if they saw a big goat, small dog and black cat to run over them and kill them dead, dead, dead!
Just at dusk the next day Billy, Stubby and Button entered a small town to look for some nice quiet place for them to sleep, for they had traveled far that day and were tired of being chased by dogs.
stepped in as noiselessly as possible and crept down the cellar stairs to find a place to hide until the family had gone to bed. Then they would begin to look about for something to eat for they expected to find potatoes and probably other vegetables there for Billy to eat and some kind of cold meat for Stubby and Button, and perhaps a pie or piece of cake, either of which would be very acceptable to all of them for they dearly loved sweets of all kinds.
The corners of the cellar were quite dark as by this time the sun had set, so Billy hid himself in one corner behind a pile of kindling, while Stubby crawled under the stationary wash tubs and Button curled himself up on top of a high pile of boxes, from which place he could see a swinging shelf with a plate of cold meat and boiled potatoes, as well as an uncut pie and some doughnuts on it. In the opposite corner of the cellar Billy spied a pile of potatoes and some cabbage and carrots.
"Well, I declare," exclaimed Button, "if we are not lucky! Here we find a good supper all laid out that will just suit our different tastes. Meat and potatoes for Stubby, as well as potatoes, cabbage and carrots for Billy."
"Hark! I hear some one come on chief of the latter bureau.
