SHARP CONTRASTS IN STOCK MARKET NEW YORK, July 16—Contrasts in the stock market were as prominent today as in any session in two weeks—the railroad stock active and strong, the oil stocks conspicuously weak and irregular and the industrials following a middle course. The oil stocks received another blow in the passing of the Sinclair Cons. Oil Corp. dividend and sold off to 35, the lowest in the company's history. Atlantic Refining was thrown on the market in large blocks and broke five points to a new law at 79 against a high of 140 earlier in the year. Weakness in Bethlehem Steel characterized the steel shares when the stock was pushed down to a new low for the year at 44%. U.S. Steel broke through par and the Gulf States was nearly two points lower at 79%. None of the specialty stocks which have recently been making market history were seen in any volume in the trading lists today. Strength of domestic railroad bonds was again the feature of the listed bond market, tho both the European and SouthAmerican government bonds exhibited steadiness. The important factor in the railroad share list was the imminence of important announcements with respect to consolidations and proposed mergers that admitted these changes will require a long time to work out. The strength in railroad issues was emphasized by the fact that four of the active rails went into new high ground for the year. It was too easy for reflection from the meeting of presidents in London today on international business and security values. Foreign exchange was firm and grain markets strong. Stock sales 1,208,600 shares; bonds, $16,905,000. GRAIN MARKET SKYROCKETS CHICAGO, July 16.—Wheat closed 3½ to 4 cents higher. Corn closed 3⅓ to 4¾c higher. Oats closed 1 cent lower.
