SACRAMENTO, July 15.—Numerous water development projects in Southern California are reported in the monthly review of permits issued by the State Department of Water Rights during May.

COLUMBIA PREXY UNDER FIRE FROM PROHIBITIONISTS
Nicholas Murray Butler.
Nicholas Murray Butler, president of Columbia University New York, one of the five large educational institutions in the country, is under fire from "dry" elements because of his disparag remarks on prohibition. He said that the Volstead law and the eighteenth amendment have not any way benefited the American public; but have, in fact, created evil and proven a failure.
favors repeal.

IMPERILS POULTRY
URBANA Ill., July 15. Tuberculosis is attacking poultry flocks, experts of the animal pathology and hygiene division of the College of Agriculture, University of Illinois, have discovered.
The disease has made its way into a majority of the farm flocks in some sections of the state and appears to be spreading.
Avian tuberculosis — the type found in chickens — cannot be cured, its control depending entirely on preventive measures, according to the university expert. Infected flocks should be given the tuberculin test, the reactors destroyed and the premises disinfected, they recommend.
"A tuberculous flock of chickens on a farm endangering other flocks in the community," the statement sent to 800 State veterinarians warms.
"Flying birds, such as English sparrows, may carry the infection, while in some localities the chickens on different farms intermingle and spread the disease."
The final stages of the disease are marked by weakness, paleness of the comb, skin and mucous membranes, loss of flesh, unthriftiness and sometimes swollen joints and lameness. The appetite of the affected chickens remains normal until just before death.
Ah, ins! she cried, with girlish pride, I've ditched the turkey duster.
Many a man, in search of a cubic feet per second from eight springs in Graham Jones canyon to be used for mining and domestic purposes. Cost will be $35,000.
W. W. Bramlette of Little Lake asked for 0.5 of a cubic foot per second from springs for irrigation and A. M. Johnson of Goldfield. Nov. was granted permission to utilize one second cubic foot from a spring in the county for irrigation purposes.
The Coronado Water Co. of San Diego was given a permit to appropriate 665 feet per second from an underground flow in the Tijuana valley for municipal purposes. Cost is estimated at $125,000.
Victor Cherbak and associates of Alta Loma have applied for two cubic feet per second of underground flow in San Bernardino county. They propose to spend $11,000 in irrigation development. Five cubic feet per second from an unnamed stream in the same county was asked by Frank Forster of Los Angeles for irrigation projects. Cost is placed at $15-200. The Keisham-Sicapton Co. of Los Angeles has applied for 160 acre feet per annum from a spring in San Bernardino county.

FROZEN DESSERTS
Frozen desserts are healthful for summer—much more so than heavy pastries, cakes or puddings. Cream is of two kinds—(1) Philadelphia ice cream made from uncooked cream, sweetened and flavored. (2) French ice cream which contains eggs and is made into a cooked custard before freezing. Variations of these two basic creams are made by adding chocolate syrup, fruits and juices, different colors, flavors, chopped fruit or nuts. A water ice is a combination of fruit juice and syrup frozen. A shorbet is fruit juice combined with cooked syrup, gelatine or egg whites and has more body and richness than a water ice.
A parfait is a mixture of fruit juice and sugar into which is folded whipped cream and eggs, the mixture then packed into a mold and frozen without stirring. A mousse is fruit juices and whipped cream, no eggs, similarly packed and frozen. It generally consists of educational institutions in the country; is under fire from "dry" remarks because of his disparagraphics on prohibition. He said that the Volstead law and the eighteenth amendment have not any way benefitted the American public; but have, in fact, created evil and proven a failure.
