WALSH (I. N. S. Sports Editor) PARIS, July 14. The track and field championships of the Olympic games will go down this year as the greatest games held since the revival of the famous classic. While the United States won the title, the athletes representing Finland diminished the American's victory. The athletes from the United States set up new world marks, they proved their prowess in most of the competition, but the men representing the little mite of a country, Finland, fought all the other nations to the ground and bowedely to the Americans. The honors for individual brilliance undoubtedly should go to Paavo Nurmi and Willie Ritola, the Finnns who dimmed the laurel of all other competitors by their performances. Nurmi was the surprise of the meet. He gave an all around exhibition of speed and endurance seldom witnessed in athletic carnivals. Eight world records went by the board in the final reckoning at the end of the meet and five of them were hung up by Americans. The Americans made their records in the 400 metre hurdles when F. M. Taylor made a new mark of 52-3-5 in the pentathlon when R. Legendre set a new mark of 25 feet six inches in the broad jump; in the decathlon when H. M. Osborne made a total of 7,710-775 points, and in the 400 and 1600 metre relays, when the boys from the United States set new marks of 41 seconds and 3.16 respectively. The other records were made in the 10,000 metre run by Willie Ritola of Finland whose mark was 362-3-1-5, another record of 9.33-3-5 by Ritola in the 3000 metre steep chase, and by E. H. Liddell, England, who made a mark of 47-5 in winning the 400 metre run. HAROLD LLOYD IS HANDBALL CHAMP LOS ANGELES, July 14.—Harold Lloyd, film actor, held the Hollywood singles handball championship today, following his defeat of Robert A. Golden in straight sets. SAILOR JAILED Charged with driving an automobile while under the influence of liquor, R. G. Vall, San Diego sailor, was today in the county jail. Justice of the Peace John B. Cox set Vall's hearing for July 29 at 10 a.m. The complaint against Vall was signed by H. Flander and followed a collision on West Fifth-st at Friday. Vall was unable to raise $500 demanded by the justice for his release. BUS BOY WITNESS AT DORIS HEARING LOS ANGELES, July 14.—Gerald Walters, cafe bus boy, is to be the star witness tomorrow at the final session of the grand jury investigating the death of Henry D. Meyer, Pasadena millionaire, and Mrs. Theresa Doris, as a result of which Mrs. Doris' husband, Charles W. Doris, wealthy Long Beach resident, is held for murder. Walters was formerly employed by Doris and worked in the apartment house where the man and woman were killed. TAKE TESTIMONY ON WEEVIL INJUNCTION PRESCOTT, July 14.—Taking of testimony was started here today on the motion to make permanent the injunction preventing destruction of Arizona cotton crops because of alleged presence of boll weevil. W. D. Pierce, Banning entomologist, testified there was little weevil in the state. GLADYS WALTON IN NEW COMEDY ROLE A few years ago Gladys Walton, famous Universal screen beauty, was doing aquatic stunts for a motion picture company. Doing very well at it, too, for her work attracted considerable attention, and soon she was given opportunities in more important parts. She is a wonderful swimmer and diver and still spends a great deal of her time in a swimming pool when she is away from the studio, at Universal City, where she is now under contract. When she was shown a working script for "The Wild Party," her latest starring vehicle, which will be shown at the United theatre Tuesday and Wednesday, she gave a joyous exclamation: "Hurray! Look what I have to do!" she said. She pointed to a sequence in the play calling for several swimming and diving stunts. TOURNELLES, France, July 14 Adams Smith of Erie, Pa., the only American in the 1500-metres swimming race of the Olympic swimming contests, failed to qualify for the finals today when he finished fourth in his semi-final heat. The heat was won by Boy Chariton, the Australian swimmer who yesterday broke the world's record for the distance when he won in 21 minutes 20.4 seconds Arneberg, former record holder of Sweden, finished second. Miss Wainwright, the American can swimmer, easily won her semi-final in the 400 metre free style for women. Her time was 6 minutes, 19-3-5 seconds, Miss De Moleworth, of Great Britain finished second. American women swimmer scored again in the second heat of the 400 metres free style when Gertrude Ederle and Marth Norlius of the United States finished first and second. The winner's time was 6 minutes 23-4-seconds. In the high diving all the American entries qualified for the finals tomorrow. In the first series, Eve of Aus tralia was first with 157 points Pete Des Jardines of Miami, second; Vicent of France, third In the second series, Walmann o AT ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA, AS OF THE CLOSE OF BUSINESS ON THE 30th DAY OF JUNE, 1924 RESOURCES COMMERCIAL SAVINGS COMBINED 1. 2 Loans and Discounts (including rediscounts) $488,140.88 $277,150.12 $765,291.00 4. With the American stars, Vincent Richards, Watson M. Washburn and Francis M. Hunter, all advancing to the second round by reason of their victories yesterday, the first round of doubles got under way this morning. Vincent Richards and Francis M. Hunter won from the Romanians, Mishu and Stern, by default. Luis and Domingo Terralva, Chileans, defeated the Romanians, Roman and Luppu in straight sets 7-5 6-2 6-2. Interest among the women enthusiasts is in the showing of Helen Wills, California wonder girl and champion of America, in the title play. A crowd flocked to the courts yesterday to see her in action but they were disappointed when Madane Marnet of Spain, her opponent in the first round, defaulted. Suzanne Lenglen, French champion, watched the opening round for some time but the warm weather compelled her to retire. She looked thinner than she did at Wimbledon, when she was advised by her physician to take a complete rest and drop all competitions. The first American casualty was suffered in the second round of the women’s singles when Miss Lillian Scharman of Brooklyn was defeated by Senorita Alvarez of Spain, 6-2, 6-0. R. Norris Williams 11, the American star, won his second round match when he defeated S. M. Hadri, of India in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. Americans scored another straight victory in the men’s when Watson M. Washburn defeated Gluhpo of Roumania in straight sets 6-2, 6-3, 6-4. SARGUM PROUTINGS Paavo Nurmi, a son of Finland, must have learned to toddle after reindeer, and after he became a boy he must have played at chasing young reindeer down. He is the greatest long distance runner after another. His terrific pace just kills off all competitors. He was the marvel of the present Olympic meet. Fred Groat, the lad who built up quite a rep in high school athletics while attending Whitier a few years back, and later with Caltek, has signed a contract to try and fool Coast League batters. He will do his stuff with the Vernon Tigers. Bill Essick is doing everything in his power to strengthen his weak link, his pitching staff. Bill has given up hope to receiving help from the big leagues. Four or five men from that source have proven flivvers. Bill is in hopes that Groat will prove another Kid Bryan. Saturday was Chadbourne day at Washington Park. Chad has seen 21 years service in professional ball. During that time he has spent six years with the Tigers. Hap Hogan traded Walter Carlisle for Chad, and Hap surely slipped Walter McCready a package in so doing. Carlisle has been out of the ranks for several years, while old Chad just keeps on going. Chad is not a sensational hitter, but he always manages to say around the three hundred mark. He has no peer on the Coast in the fielding game. He is the greatest Tiger in captivity. Chad never kicks on decisions. RAILS LEAD IN STOCK MOVEMENT NEW YORK, July 14.—Today session on the stock exchange wipe one of generally advancing price Momentarily the market halt when, after the rise, it encountered some profit taking and shrew selling and then, under the leader's arms of the oils, retraced its firing steps. Foreign exchange started to ball rolling upward and prior to the opening of the stock market sterling had recorded a gain about one cent. Stocks open strong and continued so until fourth hour, when the first sign of liquidation appeared. Trading was not devoid of uptacular features; these being finished principally by the speech stocks. Philip Jones had further rally to 88, up 13 points from Saturday's close and points from Friday's close. Cast Iron pipe which has consistently strong and active more than six months, crossed today for the first time. Brooklyn Union Gas replaced considered as the lender of the public utility stocks and sold at the year best levels. Speculative sentiment was greatly bullish over the week and an accumulation of buy orders awaited the opening of a market. The first sales in so stocks were made at an advance a full point from Saturday's close Bull pool were active in own specialties in all of which prices were marked higher at start. Rails were not conspicuous for their activity. The railroads were the lead in another forward movement prices in the last hour. Niveen was in big demand sold up to a new high for the year at 25%, Chicago and St. Louis crossed part for the first time its history. The bond market was modern The first American casualty was suffered in the second round of the women's singles when Miss Lillian Scharman of Brooklyn was defeated by Senorita Alvarez of Spain, 6-2, 6-0. R. Norris Williams 11, the American star, won his second round match when he defeated S. Hadi, of India in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. Americans scored another round victory in the men's singles when Watson M. Washburn defeated Glaupo of Roumania in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, 6-4. In the second round of the woman's singles, Mrs. Molla Mallory won her first victory from Norway, defeating Maïne J. Vaussard of France, 6-2, 6-3. Each drew a bye in the first round. In the first round of the men's doubles R. Norris Williams and Watson M. Washburn, United States, defeated Kirchmaer and Gonze, Hungary, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0. In the third round of the men's singles, Francis M. Hunter defeated Hortal, Argentina, 6-3, 6-3, 6-1. Van Lennep, Holland, won from Chattaruzuce, Argentina, 6-3, 6-1, 6-1. Gene Borotra of France eliminated L. Torralva of Chile in the third round of the men's singles after three hard fought sets. Scores 6-7, 7-5, 7-5. In the first round of the women’s doubles, Miss Kathleen McKane and Mrs. Covell of England eliminated Mrs. Marian Z. Jesup and Miss Eleanor Goss 6-1, 6-2. Torralva surprised the holiday crowd attending the games by taking an early lead in each set from Borotra, the Wimbledon champion. The Frenchmen's court covering and ability to make superior strokes eventually overbalanced the Chilean's excellent placements. Miss Helen Wills, American woman champion, entered the third round of the singles, when Senorita Marset of Spain defaulted to her in the second round. Miss Wills drew a bye in the first round. She will meet Mrs. Satterwaite in the third round. Tagging All Bases The Giants increased their lead to 7½ games when they defeated the Cubs. In the American league the Yankees and Washington kept pace with each other, defeating the Browns and Indians, respectively, New York maintaining its lead by a game and a half. The Braves and Reals took turns in blanking each other in a double header. The Dodgers had an easy time trimming the Cardinals 9 to 4. Johnny Adams gets a crack at the Coast Lightweight Championship at Hollywood Friday night. Johnny has withstood the elimination program of the Holly-ball ball. Chad never kicks on decisions, never rows with other players, but he never gives up, playing just as hard when the score is 10 to 1 against him, as when it stands 1 to 1. Fans and ball players alike are his friends. His clean living, long career and second should be an inspiration to all young ball players. Stanislaus Zybiscko, the graduate of four universities, an accomplished pianist, who speaks and writes seven languages, and who held the world's wrestling championship for some time, is headliner at the Philharmonic Auditorium a week from Wednesday night. Toots Mondt is the man who will face the great Pole. Toots is much heavier and a much more accomplished wrestler than when he met Roy Maebe two years ago. Toots got a filing at the championship with Ed Lewis a short time ago. Lewis kept his crown but Mondt made the champion put forth every effort to stay put. Next Tuesday evening is the big night at Jack Doyle's fight emporium. Dave Shade and Bert Colima try matching wits and punches. Colima has been going so-so. Some nights, when he is in condition and tries, he looks and acts like a champion, but on other occasions he has not been nearly so good. Billy Wells took him to two clean cut cleanings, while Bert won one mix-up by a narrow margin. Bert will try to get by Shade, as he figures on going east soon and a victory over one of the world's greatest welterweights would be the greatest boost the Mex could hope to attain. On the other hand, Shade does not want to lose any of his prestige with the Eastern moguls, and will try to lay the Mex away as soon as possible. Anyway it looks to be one of the best main events that the new fistic emporium has seen. FRUIT SALES (Calif., Fruit Exchange) Philadelphia: higher good mand oranges; firm lemons; $2.95 to $3.70. Johnny Adams gets a crack at the Coast Lightweight Championship at Hollywood Friday night. Johnny has withstood the elimination program of the Hollywood Club for several weeks, and there is no one between him and the Coast honors except "Oakland Frankie" Burns. These boys will surely put up a battle for the crown. They both have good records for clean fast fighting, and their coming match will go along at such a pace that it will in all probability end before the four rounds are up. Toby Montague is on the same card. Toby fought several times at Vernon, and looked pretty good, but he has been appearing in the moving picture town the past several weeks.
