GAS ENGINES WILL REPLACE MOTORS Installation of gas engines instead of electric motors to operate water pumps has been an important feature of the present power shortage, an official of the So. Cos. Gas Co. indicated today. Over a period of two years, the gas engine is cheaper, with more expensive to install. The Yorba Linda Water Co. at a recent meeting authorized expenditure of $12,000 for a natural gas engine to replace the electric motor. The pumping plant has a 200 h. p. motor and pump capable of raising 2800 gallons per minute. The new engine will be 240 h. p. It is a Pacific centrifugal single stage double suction high duty pump of 3500 gallons per minute capacity. The amount of water clients of the company may use was cut one-sixth. Orange and Santa Ana and vicinity have been installing gas engines or preparing to install them in considerable quantities, it is said, since the power famine began.
