EPHESIAN CHURCH
BEGAN IN REVIVAL
The subject of the sermon of Dr. Geissinger at the White Temple Sunday morning was "The Story of a City Church" and the text, Rev. 24, "Thou hast lost thy first love."
The Church of Ephesus was a city church. Ephesus was a great city in that time. It was port of entry and the end of a great trade route. It was a capital both politically and religiously. The shadow of Rome was over it. The Temple of Artemisia was there. You can see the ships, cargoes, sailors, stewardors, busy wharves, great warehouses, thronging streets, booths, stores, caravans going and coming and men and women busy buying and selling.
It was a picturesque city full of color. All that goes with a great port and a great commercial city was there. Money was quickly made and invisibly spent. Life was gay and rapid. The emphasis was upon gaiu, upon pleasure; upon the flesh. The harpy and trafficker in honor and chastity were both there.
In this great heathen, rich, worldly city the foundations had been laid for Christianity by Paul. The Ephesian church began in a revival. The story is given in the Book of Acts and can be filled out by the Ephesian Letter of Paul and by this letter of John's. You recall that the people turned away from their idols and their shrines, with great ecstasy. They burned their books. It does not say that they burned their temples. Of course they did not for only a comparative few turned to the true light.
But what a church this must have been, revival born and loyored by such a line of distinguished pastors as it was. Its first pastor was Paul and if you would measure his greatness spiritually read his prayer for this church in his letter to it. And while he was there such lay members as Aquilla and Priscilia were there also.
He was followed by the eloquent Appolos. If Appolos is the author of the Epistle to the Hebrews, as some scholars think, we can form some opinion of the kind of preaching the church of Ephesus listened to when he was
WOMAN SURVIVES SUICIDE ATTEMPT
SAN FRANCISCO, June 24.
Physicians said today that Eunice McMullin Peterson, well known lecturer and political campaigner and daughter of a prominent Arizona jurist, would recover from a poison potion taken, according to her statement, to deputy district attorney Fitzgerald, with suicidal intent.
The voice of conscience caused her to attempt to end her life she told Fitzgerand, confessing, he said, that she was the mysterious "M. J. B." who had written letters to the district attorney's office expressing willingness tourrender and "confess her crimes."
She told Fitzgerald, he said, that she had wedded Theodore Peterson while still the wife of another man. Peterson, a traveling salesman, is said to be in Seattle. Fitzgerald said as there was no evidence other than the woman's statement there would be no prosecution.

them to remember their former life, to repent of their lapsing and to turn anew in devotion to God. Their trouble was, the world was too much with them. The politics of Ephesus, its business, its trade, its religion of paganism, its innumerable associations and contacts. Their souls had had too little opportunity at the grace of God.
I take here is a warning for us as individuals and as a church.
There are three spiritual perils confronting the church of today: First, the persistent, insistent, pervasive spirit of worldliness; secondly, the peril incident to the intellectual confusion that comes when a smaller world gives way to a larger range of ideas; thirdly, the peril that comes from vastness of opportunity. I shall speak of the last peril next Sunday. I have spoken to you of the second already. Let us look at this first peril which has ever beset the church and the individual Christian.
Our ordinary pursuits and life are a discipline for the life of the spirit or at least may be so and

FRENCH MOVING TO RECOGNIZE RUSSIA
WASHINGTON, June 24.—The French government has moved to take up with the United States the question of the recognition of soviet Russia, it was learned here to day.
Edouard Heriot, the new French premier, has sent a note to Secretary of State Hughes, thru the French embassy here, asking the opinion of this government on the advisability of entering into diplomatic relations with Russia.
The note reached the embassy this morning.
France, according to reports in diplomatic circles here, is anxious to recognize the Moscow government, but wants to sound out Secretary Hughes before going ahead.
Whether any other questions were taken up in Premier Heriot's note could not be learned in advance of the transmission of the document to the state department.
It is the first formal communication that has reached Washington from Paris since the Heriot ministry took charge of the government.
The United States, during the Wilson, Harding and Coolidge administrations, has consistently opposed the recognition of soviet Russia, the attitude of this government being that diplomatic relations cannot be established so long as the soviet will give no guarantees for the protection of American property and other rights.
No change in this position is expected as a result of the French representations.

MAKING THE COFFEE
FOR BREAKFAST
Never fill—the kettle in the morning with water that has been standing in the pipe over night, and never use water that has been left in the kettle. Water, especially that coming from lead pipes, is harmful when allowed to stand for some hours, and even when coming from bins or from pipes it should be allowed to run a few minutes each morning. Some people think coffee should be made from hot water only, some prefer cold. Personally I use whichever is handy with possibly a leaning toward hot. Have the water briskly boiling and scald out the pot first thing. Put in one level tablespoon of coffee for each person and one for the pot. Then pour a cup (regular measuring cup) of water over the coffee, one for each tablespoon of coffee. Let it boil up three times, take off fire, dash a little cold water into the pot to settle it, then stand aside for a few minutes. You may mix the coffee with egg if you wish, but if you follow these directions there is no reason why you should not have a good cup of clear coffee for your meal. If you use a percolator follow the same method exactly, but let it "perk" for about 20 minutes, then let it stand to settle. The same measurements are used in the cold method; hot cold water is used and so soon as the coffee boils it is done and should be set off the fire.
