WILD RUSH AT ATHENS ON HILL The oil infurniture of So. Calif. is interrupted, excited, and amazed at the wonderful oil well the Union Oil Co. has opened up at Athens on the Hill and the wonderful possibilities of another Santa Fe Springs looms. In the rush to acquire images, the will speculation as to the outcome of the field, and the honors heaped upon the Union Oil Co., the man who located the well must not be lost sight of. Three years ago, one C. S. Thomas, former assistant ecologist of the Union Oil Co., set the stake for the Potter Oil Co. for toe Athens on the Hill well. The Potter Oil Co. drilled 4520 feet and not finding what they were looking for, quit. The action of the Potter was discouraging to Thomas, who worked out the structure of the now famous field who was firm in his conviction that the Potter had not made a sufficient deep test hole to test out the location as final. The well lay idle for two years. The Potter Oil Co. kept its leases and holdings, and it was only a few months ago that the Potter entered into agreement with the Union Oil Co. of Calif. to take over the holdings and go ahead with the test. It appears that the Potter Oil Co. was sitting almost on top of the pay sand as the Union Oil Co. had only to drill 450 feet of hole and get a 1000-barrel well producing the highest gravity oil the Los Angeles basin has ever produced. At a depth of 4571 feet the Potter well is only a few feet in the oil sand and is making a most wonderful showing for a wildcat discovery well. It is believed the Potter well is the Meyer 3 well of the field and locates the sand that will make Athens on the Hill a second Santa Fe Springs. Long Beach staged a comeback last week in the way of big wells. Three producers running from 1500 to 1800 barrels were completed and placed on production and more than 5000 barrels of new production was added to the field's output. W. R.
