BALLOON TIRES
MONEY SAVERS
Here are some more questions and answers given by the Goodrich Rubber Co. regarding the qualities of balloon tires, according to Daniels & Williams, local distributors of Brunawick tires made by Geerich and of the Alk.
1. Do balloon tires affect the speed of the car?
Balloon tires make it possible to transport over rough, winding and tubular trusses on roads without slowing down below normal speed, thereby greatly increasing mileage per hour without danger due to racing speed.
2. Do they change the gear ratio of the car?
If the outside diameter of the balloon tire under load is nearly identical with the outside diameter of the replaced high pressure tire, there is no difference in the gear ratio. This will also hold true regarding new tire readings.
3. What air pressure should be used?
In inflation pressures run from 20 to 40 pounds depending upon the load we carry. Over-inflation reduces riding comfort. Under inflation shortens tire life.
4. Will balloon tires interfere with power?
Balloon tires used in accordance with the load and inflation schedule do not detract from the power of the car.
5. Will balloon tires consume more gasoline?
When mixed in accordance with the recommended pressures they should not consume more gasoline than will the present high pressure equipment.
6. Are snubbers and shock absorbers required?
Snubbers absorbers or snubbers are desirable on most cars but not essential. Some cars when equipped with balloon tires may develop galloping. If so, they should be equipped with snubbers.
7. What mileage will balloon tires affect?
Balloon tires affect the speed of the car.
Signing Foreign Entries for Ascot
LOS ANGELES, May 10—News received in Los Angeles early in April through private channels and verified this week by press Ascot, announcement that the 500 mile race at Indianapolis on May 30th will have no foreign entry, caused President George Bentel to dispatch to Europe John Val, Italian sportman, to represent the Ascot Speedway Asc'n, in lining up entries for the $50,000 Thanksgiving Day road race to be run over the four and one-half mile circuit over the hills adjacent to Ascot.
Val will make a tour of English, German, Belgian, French, Italian and Austrian automobile factories with authority to accept entries and make shipping and transportation arrangements for the cars and driving crews which are nominated.
This Dodge Fan Forgets Repairs
Ed Backs of Placentia is another of those many Dodge fans who has had to spend little or nothing on his car. Backs has a 1922 Dodge coupe which he has driven for 19,000 miles over all sorts of roads.
His expenses have consisted of gas, oil and grease costs. The same tires are on the machine and are god for 5 miles yet.
He is getting 21 miles to the gallon and 250 miles to the quart of oil. Recently for the first time his valves were ground and a new set of rings put in.

CHAMP STUDE PUT IN MUSEUM
SOUTH BEND, Ltd., May 10—The famous Studebaker lightrix which holds Pacific coast records in fast small carrying service has arrived here and has been placed in Studebaker museum.
This new addition to the museum in Studebaker administration building was sent by the Chester N. Weaver Co., Studebaker distributors at San Francisco.
Driven by Hart L. Weaver and James F. Gurley of the Charter N. Weaver Co., accompanied by observers, this car made road records between Los Angeles and San Francisco more than three years ago that have stood unqualified by the officially observed performance of any other car.
On Feb. 2, 1821, it established a new round-trip record between San Francisco and Los Angeles, a distance of 864.5 miles in the national time of 21 hours and 25 minutes. On the same trip it lowered the coast route record between these two cities by 2 hours 35 minutes and 20 seconds. On time being 10 hours, 12 minutes and 30 seconds for the 864.5 miles.
Three weeks later this remarkable car amassed the valley route record between the main post office at Los Angeles and Ferrery hotel office, San Francisco, running the distance of 611.1 miles in 9 hours 15 minutes and 50 seconds. It believed that this ride between these two points over this route will stand forever.
A month after thesephenomenal rung, this light-six covered the 426 miles of narrow desert trail from Los Angeles to Phoenix in 12 hours, 16 minutes, cutting off two hours and 28 minutes from the best previous automobile record. The railroad time is 1 hour 40 minutes slower than the record established by this light-six.

HUDSON PIONEER
IN NEW CAR TYPES
The Speedster came in 1916.
It was the first time that a fleet
appearing, low-hung, distinctive
four-passenger open car was presented except as a custom-built
specifically. The name Speedster
was popularized by Hudson particularly for this new car. This
handmade automobile with its dashing atmosphere of youth and beauty became the model after which have been fashioned scores of similar types. But Hudson again led the way.
The coach is probably Hudson's most interesting contribution to motordom. It was a clean rut innovation. It pioneered the idea of an enclosed motor car at a moderate price. This idea has since become, admittedly, the leading subject of motor car interest.
Hudson presents these facts of leadership because it is honestly proud of having made these contributions to motor car progres, and because it believes in all modesty.
For several seasons the Hudson Speedster has been known as one of the most beautiful and desirable of open cars. Trim-fitting tops are tailored separately to each vehicle. The Super-Six motor, with its smooth flow of ample power, is the right mechanism for this distinctive car.

"An Endorsement of Four-Wheel Brakes," Vol. 1, which reached Bill Goodrum of the Motor Sales Co., Inc., this week is chockful of compliments of the Buick from owners. There must be 600 owners who "are standing up to be counted" in this booklet.
Here's one from S. H. Welch of Glendale:
"We have been so busy that I had almost forgotten to write you about the Buick. It rained every day and night we were on the road but two, and we had a lot of mud and bad roads to pull. Had no trouble whatever.
"Four brakes are all right and the power could not be better. We drove exactly 1800 miles, coming via Grand Canyon. We were out 10 days, and, notwithstanding the heavy roads, it was a very pleasant trip.
"The red line in the motometer was never above summer heat. I believe I could have run it thru without adding water."
Para-Bell Balloon
Tires Here Soon
Para-Bell balloon tires will be available soon at the Reliable Tire Co.'s store on South Los Angeles-st, says Roy Mendoza.
Always a low pressure tire, the balloon can do good service with fewer pounds of air than any or almost any tire made, says the dealer. This unusual quality has been proved because the tire rarely breaks down. "Separation" is almost unheard of.
The tires on credit plan is working well and meeting much public approval.

OIL MILEAGE IN
OAKLAND'S RINGS
Oakland's recent development in piston rings and the improved method of finishing the cylinder bore have made possible the Oakland Motor Car Co.'s remarkable 15,000-mile or two-year guarantee against surplus oil in the combustion chamber according to Harry L. Turton, Anaheim Oakland dealer.
"The design of piston rings has changed the least of any part of the engine in the development of the automobile, being practically the same now in most engines, with the exception of the Oakland, as in the old slow speed engines first built, says Turton. "Oakland engineers have long appreciated the importance of the part played by piston rings in satisfactory engine operation. Turn a long series of experiments they have developed an improved design of piston ring.
"Oakland's two-piece wedge ring is so constructed that it exerts a pressure sideways against the sides of the ring as well as outward against the cylinder wall. This side pressure automatically compensates for any wear between the ring 'land' of the ring groove and the piston ring, thereby keeping a very tight fit and preventing oil from passing back of the rings into the combustion chamber in an excessive amount.
"The Oakland Motor Car Co. is one of the first big companies to develop and adopt an improved design of piston ring. Use of this ring, together with the highly polished cylinder bones, have enabled Oakland engineers to very successfully use aluminum alloy pistons with their many advantages."

This Favorite Super-Six Improved in All Ways
The attractions of a more beautiful and comfortable body, with the greatest Super-Six chassis ever built are combined in the new Hudson Coach.
Also unmatched price advantage. At $1550 it costs but little more than open models. Yet it provides the wanted comforts, distinction and all-season utility of a fine closed car.
Motordom concedes that no car excels Hudson in performance reliability and long life at low maintenance.
Now, to those famous qualities are added refinements that assure prompt starting in coldest weather, as well as greatly increased gasoline and oil economy.
Is it any wonder that the new coach has met a reception surpassing any Hudson ever built?
