This is the first step taken toward the actual realization of the proposed county trunk highway reaching from Anaheim—or from Fullerton via North Palm-st—to Orange County Harbor. The plan calls for concrete seven inches thick along the middle and nine inches along the edges. The County Superintendent of Highways this week completed considerable new grading in the northwest part of the county, including a large part of Katella road, which will be improved for a mile eastward of Garden Grove road and nearly a mile on Cerritos avenue, also eastward from the Garden Grove road. Bad spots in roads already gravelled also are under repair, Katella will be gravelled and not obed. Much of the delay in improving dirt roads has been due to failure of abutting property owners to get together, deed rights of way and agree to cease irrigating over roads and ruining them after they have been graded. No word yet has been received from the War Department on the proposed new bridge over the harbor on the coast highway. The pouring of concrete on West Chapman avenue—Hospital Road—will start probably within ten days. MILL CREEK ROAD STILL SNOWY Rim of World Also Impassable, A. C. S. C. Advises Members Three feet of snow still on the Mill Creek-rd makes it impassable, according to advises received this week by the district office of the A. C. S. C. from its San Bernardino office. The City Creek-rd was scheduled to open on Thursday of this week. The Rim of the World route is muddy near Deep Creek and is not recommended on that account. The Waterman Canyon-rd is in good shape. So is the Desert-rd to Big Bear Lake via Victor. Radical Changes To Riley’s Garage Plans to completely remodel the showroom, offices and used car space of Harvy D. Riley’s Studioskeeper garage in Chestnut and South Los Angeles-ste are announced. The improvements will include the construction of a mezzanine floor, where Riley and perhaps the bookkeepers will have their offices, building of an office for the new and used car departments, placing of plate glass windows along nearly the entire south side of the building and raising of the ceiling of the display rooms. To Tahoe the road via Sacramento and Placerville is all right. In Arizona the roads were still closed this week. The motorist angler will find some of his favorite streams closed this season, due to quarantine conditions, but there are plenty of haunts left for the angler to pursue his favorite pastime with some prospects of a full croel. According to the announcement of L. L. Norris, head of the Touring Bureau of the National Auto Club, the following counties are open to fishermen: Humboldt, Del Norte, Slakiyon, Tehama, Lake, Colusa, Sutter, Plumna, Sacramento, Calaveras, Shasta, Modoc, Trinity, Glenn, Butte, Yorbe, Nevada, Yolo, Sabta Cruz. The counties which have been closed by quarantine include the following: Mehdocline, Marin, Contra Costa, Lassen, Tholomme, San Jacinto, Merced, Madera, Kings, Kern, Sonoma, Napa, Alameda, Sierra, Amador Stanislaus, Mariposa, Presno, Tulare, El Dorado. Fishermen are warned to observe carefully all restrictions imposed by the counties under the provisional quarantine as the county ordinances are now being rigidly enforced. CHEVROLET FAN'S REPAIRS ARE NIL. B. C. Burns, who has a 1822 Chevrolet touring purchased as a used car, is a Chevrolet fan with both feet. And he has reason to be Burns has driven many thousands of miles and during the entire period has not had to have any repairs except minor adjustments which he made himself. Burns claims he is getting 52 miles to the gallon with top notch oil mileage to boot. The bulk of Shakespeare-Bacon controversy is based on internal evidence. SPARK PLUS VARIETY, WASTE That the present wide diversity in sizes and dimensions of automobile spark plugs is the cause of much waste in production and distribution of these commodities has been brought out by several spark plug manufacturers, who have suggested the desirability of reduced variety to the Division of Simplified Practice of the Department of Commerce. The consensus of opinion shown by their letters is that the present variety could be appreciably reduced with resulting benefit to the spark plug manufacturer, the car builder, the accessory and supply dealer, and also to the car owner. Plugs though now made in many different designs are furnished in four principal diameters; to one of which is interchangeable with another. In addition to this diversity each diameter is made in a number of different lengths; also in different sizes of "hex." The majority of those relying to the inquiry favor reduction, not only in these features, but also in the diameters. Some go so far as to recommend spark plugs be simplified to one size thread, one size of threaded shank, one length of plug body, and one size of hexagon. It is claimed this can be done without destroying the individuality of the different makes of spark plugs. Several of the manufacturers say one such plug could be adopted by all engineers. Adoption of the S. A. E. Standard 7-8 inch spark plug, with its 18 threads per inch (U.S. Fine Thread Series), is recommended above all others. Some are of the opinion that this plug need be made in only three lengths, known as "regular," "medium extension," and "full extension," to serve all motor cars. "AFTER WE SELL WE SERVE" SLOGAN "After we sell we serve." That is the slogan of Harry D. Riley's shop, suggested by a friend of Riley's. Mrs. Pepperdine Is Active Partner in Western Auto Co. It is not often that a woman's name appears among the pages of an automobile section unless she is some film or stage luminary who is pictured posing by an automobile. However, this article deals with a real business woman of the automobile world. She is Mrs. George Pepperdine, vice-president and treasurer of the Western Auto Supply Co., who operate a store in this city at 133 South Los Angeles at under the management of K. M. Brown. To her much of the credit is due for the success of the company. Mrs. Pepperdine's title is not an empty one. She has been active in the management of the Western Auto Supply Co. and has a voice in the directing of its policies and guiding its expansion since the opening of the first store. She carries her full share of the burden of guiding the destinies of this enormous chain store organization, and every morning can be found at her desk at 8:30, working throughout the day with the same office hours as the newest stenographer, she attends the mass of work that comes before her. Not only is she doing this at present but she has been actively engaged in this business since if first started in Kansas City in 1909, where she and her husband, George Pepperdine, started Western Auto Supply Co. Success seemed imminent as they built up a thriving business, but with the increase in sales came the failing in the health of Mr. Pepperdine and he was forced to move to a western clime. He re-established the company in Denver, but later moved to Los Angeles and housed the headquarters of the company in that city in a little store on Main-street. That was in 1916. Today, located in convenient centers in the city of Los Angeles are 14 of these stores. Eighty-six additional stores may be found in the principle cities of the west, making a total of 100 stores. Hardly a motorist can be found in a territory in which one of these stores is located who does not know that Western Auto has opened its hundredth store. In making plans for the reduced rates, the season of the year was taken into consideration and camping equipment was included in the marked down merchandise. Although she is a real business woman, she has not allowed work to interfere with her home duties, as she has raised two beautiful daughters. She is active in club life and is an indeaffitigable worker in the affairs that mean business advancement of Western Auto employees. It is with her help that in eight years the company has grown from a little side street store to a chain of 100 and a capitalized at $5,000,000. Mrs. Pepperdine is a business woman—or a woman in business, as you may choose to call it. SECTIN M SHOW BIG INCREASE TO USE NEW OPERATIVE METHODS Certified Market Also to Start Big Selling Campaign Soon Beginning probably next week the Orange County Certified Motor Car Markets in Anaheim and Fullerton, and possibly in Santa Ana, will introduce the stiffest competition in the used car business that the county has yet witnessed. Six or eight salesmen will be put to work at the Anaheim and Fullerton markets by Manager C. P. Hamm, on instructions from the Orange County Motor Car Dealers' Assn., with directions to "go after the business." The day is past when a market war begins and will take place. 4 DIE AT CROSSING CHICAGO, May 18.—Four men were killed at a railroad crossing near here today, when the motor car in which they were riding was struck by a Milwaukee passenger train. On account of the mangled condition of the bodies only one has been identified. He was Oscar C. Johnson, a city employs. "BLOW YOUR HORN CITIES," SAYS CLUB "Tell '6m where they are,' is suggested to the smaller towns of this section by the Auto Club of Go. Calif. This shoppy parade is directed to the communities that will be visited by tens of thousands of automobiles during the coming summer. In many of those municipalities there is not a sign of any kind to indicate the name of the place or what it represents. It is pointed out by the touring department of the auto club that this season will bring an unusually large number of home-seekers to St. Calif. They will come in automobiles and visit many towns before deciding on a place to locate. It is up to these places to take advantage of this golden opportunity to increase their population by making the SPEEDING IS PRINCIPAL OFFENCE Tourist Rush and Relaxing of Quarantine Keep Police Busy With the modification of the quarantine and the scarce generally subsiding traffic this weak has been livelier than in many weeks past. Six or eight salesmen will be put to work at the Anaheim and Fullerton markets by Manager C. P. Hamm, on instructions from the Orange County Motor Car Dealers' Assn., with directions to "go after the business." The day is past when a market can sit back and wait to have the money for a car purchase put into its hands, Hamm infilated. An active and aggressive campaign will be outlined at a meeting of the organization next week. Another change in the mode of operation will be that each dealer will look after the mechanical re-conditioning of his cars personally and not leave it to Hamm to arrange. Hamm will continue to supervise the painting of cars re-charging of batteries, etc. The markets have been selling cars right and left, and there still is a scarcity of good used cars, but competition has become sharper throut the county in this branch of the business. With the modification of the quarantine and the scarce generaly subsiding, traffic this week has been livelier than in many weeks past, Jack Pickell, City Marshal Bert Moody's traffic officer, declared today. Drivers are acting as if they had been raged up and are fracturing the speed laws right and left, says Pickell. Traffic is expected to become heavier and heavier from now on, with the tourlet rush in full swing on a scale possibly larger than ever. Speeding is the principal offence. Chief Moody has all his men working to enforce the parking ordinance, and the May record may exceed that of April, when there were 107 violators. Drives ordinarily get 30 minutes freeway over the two hours. Cars are chalked and if found there two hours later are ringed. Cutout cases are rare, but there are always a number of cases of cutting the button, turning between cross streets or alleys, etc. Plain Dealer Classified Ads produce results. Try this medium.
