George Herman Ruth, the well known right fielder, took a prominent part in the Yanks' 3 to 2 defeat of the Athletics, driving in two runs in the fifth with a double and rounding out the day with a single and a pass. It was the eighth straight defeat for the Athletics.
The Tigers rallied in the late innings to take a fall out of the White Sox, 6 to 4. Heilmann having a perfect day with three hits, one of which was a homer.
Zach Wheat, the young old man of the Dodgers, wafted one out of the park with two on in the eighth against Barnes and the Braves finished second, 3 to 0. Ruether was impeccable, so to speak.
Ray Kremer, Coast league contribution, shut the Cubs right out with a pair of hits, the Pirates winning 2 to 0. Cuyler substituted for Carey and socked a single, double and triple.
Two home runs by Williams and another by Ford at the expense of Bentley, staked the Phillies to two straight over the Giants, 5 to 4.
Place both feet firmly on the ground and await the shock. The Red Sox won their sixth straight by thumping three Senatorial pitchers for 15 hits. Score, 14 to 4.
The Brownns evened the series by beating the Indiana 7 to 4, rough-riding Shaute and Morton for 16 hits.

"CLAY MODELER" HEADS VODE BELIEF
An unusually good bill presents itself at the California Theatre Thursday with a photoplay that will please the most exacting audience. Geo. Wichman, "clay model of national reports," opens his show. He uses the audience's pick his models and a great of comedy is derived from work.
Hanley & Howard in "Lady Mary Brown" offer a splendid combination of comedy and mony singing. Their act is so perfectly arranged and ably presented as to make it a most delightful amusing and interestingly entertaining offering by even one who witnesses this clever dance walking as a form of amusement was practised the sands of years before the era. Good wire walker must have quickness of eye, rapidity of action, great muscular strength and thorough knowledge of equilibrium. These essentials in conjunction with an enduring pattern unwavering perseverance in constant practice has made Clifford & Mayme Butters one of the vets best "wire acts" of the present day. They give a splendid exhibition of wire walking that will startle any audience.
Clifford & Leslie, in "The Jars" offer a versified program singing and dancing done in the Broadway style, that they claim Broadway as their All-Mater is proved by the fact that for the past three seasons they have been featured in two of the big town's largest revues. This will be seen at the conclusion their present tour in a new musical production of Geo. M. Cohen.
Allen's Cheyenne Ministro "Riding the Range of Mirth and Melody" depict three cow-punners and a western girl, who affords a hard day on the range idle away.

The Wheats: Mack and Zack, with the Dodgers and Curtis, with a Texas team.
The Barneses: Jess and Charles
eries when he seems hopelessly outplayed is little short of astounding.
The secret is out now why Paul Berlenbach met a tartar in Jack Delaney a few weeks ago. Paul was really fighting Ovilla Chapdelaine. Now who could lick anyone with that moniker? The story goes that Delaney chose a ring name out of respect for the reverence with which the name Chapdelaine is known.

ALL IN THE FAMILY
That baseball runs in the family, not unlike the wooden leg, has been accepted as a matter of fact for some time. This season quite a number of brothers are putting on their family acts on the diamond. We have with us at the present writing the following brother teams:

That Walter Hagen is set for the national and international golfing events of the coming summer is indicated by the decisive manner in which he won recently the annual north-south championship at Pinehurst. Hagen not only triumphed over a brilliant field of American golfers but won out against the master playing of two of Europe's best. Arthur Havers and Ockenden, British and French title holders, were entered in the tourney.
Hagen stands without an equal as a cool, confident tourney player. His ability to make recovies when he seems hopelessly outplayed is little short of astounding.
The secret is out now why Paul Berlenbach met a tartar in Jack Delaney a few weeks ago. Paul was really fighting Ovilla Chapdelaine. Now who could lick anyone with that moniker? The story goes that Delaney chose a ring name out of respect for the reverence with which the name Chapdelaine is held in Canada, his native soil, since the publication of a book there, "Maria Chapdelaine," by the late Louis Hamon.
There's one for your book, brother press agent.
According to word from France it was Mme. Criqui who caused Eugene of the silver jaw and world of nerve to re-enter the ring game.
Criqui announced his retirement on his return home after winning and losing the featherweight title in a short pan of 60 days in America. Criqui's wife urged him to retire.
A couple of weeks ago she attended a fight with him. Charlie Ledoux and Mascart, another French favorite, were the fighters. After watching them Mme. Criqui said in her best French: "If you couldn't lick both those hams in a night I'd disown you." So now Criqui wants to try it.
Eddie Roush, demon outfielder of the Cincel Reds, and Frankie Frisch, future manager of New York Giants, have announced that they are after the National league batting crown worn by the eminent Rogers Hornsby. While ought to make the summer an interesting one for "Rajah" as well as the N. L. fans.
The showing the world light-heavyweight champion, Michael McTigue, made against Young Stribbling the other night may be the answer to the question as to why the champ is unwilling to meet Gene Tunney, once holder of the same crowd. Tunney is a much more experienced battler, though perhaps not as hard a hitter as the Georgia boy. Maybe Mike knows his own limitations.

"Little Pokerface" Starts on Long Journey to Olympics
BERKELEY, May 7.—A little girl with sturdy arms and legs, wearing a black dress and hat, kissed her father good bye, found a train seat for her mother and started today on a journey that will end in Paris in July when she defends the prowess of American women in sport.
The girls was Helen Wills, champion woman tennis player of the United States.
Pushing aside her school books at the Univ. of Calif., Miss Wills quietly departed for New York, where she will sail May 15 for Europe to play in the Olympic games and where she hopes to match wits and brawn in a world title battle with Suzanne Lenglen, the French star.
Living up to her name of "little pokerface," the 18-year-old American teen champion had only this to say about a clash with the temperamental Suzanne:
"No one can tell anything about a tennis match. I've worked hard to improve my game and should I meet Mile. Lenglen I'll just do the best I can. I can't say anything else except that I want a chance to meet her and hope I do."
Calm, determined, she lifted a firm chin, appearing to be thorny prepared for her European invasion.
Miss Wills' early departure for abroad, she said, was to give her game finishing touches in England, where she will play in the British championships and the Wightman cup tilt at Wimbledon late in June before going to Paris for the Olympic play the middle of July.
They gave a splendid exhibition walking that will many audience.
Word & Leslie, in "The Jest," offer a verified program of and dancing done in their style, that they can broadway as their Alma is proved by the fact that the past three seasons they been featured in two of the town's largest revues. They seen at the conclusion of present tour in a new musi-duction of Geo. M. Cohen's's Cheyenne Minstrels, the Range of Mirth and depict three cow-punch-a western girl, who after day on the range idle away.
