Smith, president of the New York Central railroad, brings to public attention the career of a man who began his life's work in a most humble position. His first job was that of a clerk, but, not feeling satisfied he took a job with a gang of common railway laborers. His advancement at first was slow but he finally reached the top. His success illustrates what has been shown so many times, that success is a matter of ambition, industry, personal efficiency and thrift. A casual glance at the list of America's successful men will emphasize the truth of this statement. Frank W. Woolworth began life as a clerk in a store in Water-town, N. Y. Cyrus H. Curtis, Philadelphia publisher, started his career as a newsboy. E. H. Harriman earned his first money as a clerk in a broker's office. Andrew Carnegie began as a bobbin boy in a Pennsylvania cotton mill. Charles M. Schwab was a clerk in a small store and later became stake driver for an engineering corps. John Wanamaker began his career as an errand boy. James J. Hill clerked in a steamship office. Henry Ford was originally a Detroit machinist. Thomas Edison began selling newspapers on trains running out of the same city when 12 years old. The list might be continued infinitely. Success is very largely a matter of one's own determination. And true success is not confined to those who have become leaders of their time. Success just as ANAHEIM PHONE EXCHANGE GROWS With the total number of stations reaching 2041, a gain of 39 in April, the average number of daily local and toll calls, 10,717 and 600, respectively, with 26 orders for connections to fill, the Anaheim Exchange has never had so large a volume of business. Manager E. A. Beard declared today. Business generally is picking up in Anaheim, says Beard, who judges by the fact that collections from pay stations have been improving during the past two months. Northern Orange-co now can communicate by telephone with Laguna Beach, where a private telephone company now is operating, the Huntington Beach company, and Laguna will be listed in the next telephone directory. CHURCHMEN SPLIT OVER BISHOP VOTE SEATTLE, May 7.—Episcopalians were in a quandy today as the result of an unsatisfactory conclusion to the deliberations held here yesterday in an effort to select a successor to the late Rt. Rev. Frederick W. Keaton, bishop of the diocese of Olympia. Clergy and laity split on the question of a bishop, the clergy holding out in repeated ballots for Dr. George Craig Stewart of Evanston, Ill., and the laity steadfastly refusing to endorse his election. Several story sessions were held and an indefinite adjournment was finally taken. Dr. Stewart was scored by Miss Emmaline Powell of Tacoma as "arrant and domineering." Success is very largely a matter of one's own determination. And true success is not confined to those who have become leaders of their time. Success just as worthy and praiseworthy may be found in the more modest fields of decoror, founded on the same solid principles. Julian's Nerve Has made him rich; how about YOUR Nerve? LISTEN FOLKS: Julian has the biggest proposition, BUT I have the surest little thing in Orange County that will make you from $6,000 to $19,000 with certainty within a year and possibly $30,000. NO FOOLIN'. Owner was offered $25,000 for this beautiful 5½ acre Valencia Grove and home on West Broadway less than six months ago, but an unforeseen force has struck him down and FORCED HIM TO SELL.
