EDITORIAL AND FEATURES An Independent Newspaper Issued Every Afternoon Except Sunday Paul·V. Hester Editor and Publisher DAILY GREETING TO OUR READERS A LIFE THAT TELLS ON OTHER LIVES, AND MAKES THIS WORLD LESS FULL OF EVIL, AND OF PAIN A LIFE WHICH, LIKE A PEBBLE DROPPED AT SEA, SENDS ITS WIDE CIRCLES TO A HUNDRED SHORES LET SUCH BE MINE: CREATOR OF TRUE LIFE! —HORATIUS BONAR MUCH RELIGIOUS NEWS IN NEWSPAPERS American newspapers of the better type give much space and prominence to news of churches and of religious work. All notable activities of churches and of church organizations, are given space as news. And so are the announcements, late in the week, of Sunday church services. Column after column each week, is devoted to church news and religious intelligence. Some papers supplement this with religious miscellany. So that the newspaper of the type which is conscientiously impelled to give emphasis to the higher and better things of life, is an encyclopedia of current events in church circles, and in religious thought and effort, in general. This is given impartially and without bias among the various religious denominations and faiths. This is a wholesome service that newspapers render churches and homes and all the influences which are for good in the community. Nor is this all. Newspapers of this class, in their feature and miscellaneous matter, look carefully to moral values and in the matter of cleanliness work hand in hand with the religious and ethical organizations and influences of the community. It would be difficult to appraise the value of the newspaper press in broadcasting religious information and in fostering moral and spiritual movements and influences. Teach the boy to be the soul of honor. Being honorable never should become an obsolete virtue. Teach the boy to be the soul of honor. Being honorable never should become an obsolete virtue. MR. COOLIDGE IS TO NAME CONVENTION HEADS Another phenomenon in American politics, which demonstrates how democratic this country is. Calvin Coolidge is the dominating figure today in the Republican party of the Nation. He is so sure of being nominated at Cleveland in June that nothing short of a political cataclysm would prevent. He is the most powerful man in the party, by all odds. And yet he has not grasped this power. He has not usurped it autocratically. It has come to him, because of the political valuation that his party places upon his leadership. It is dramatic. It is thrilling. It could occur only in a democratic land among Anglo-Saxon peoples. Mr. Coolidge is of modest extraction. His rise has been phenomenal—but not unusual in American politics. There have been many phenomena of the kind. Mr. Coolidge would not abuse power. He could not if he would. For the same impulse that prompts the people to repose great power in one man, would prompt them quickly to withdraw this power, should the man upon whom it is bestowed misuse it or fail to make proper use of it. We're all just about alike." "Well, I try to be courteous at least," Black protested, in self-defense. "Courteous!" White scoffed. "Do you ever give a woman your seat in a street car?" "Of course not." Black replied, "I never have one!" Like many other excellent persons, Aunt Edith is not a chuch member, but she is a regular attendant at the village church, which is so near her cottage as to seem under the same roof. When at the close of a recent sermon, the minister requested all those present who had never united with the church to retire at the end of the service, everybody was surprised to see Aunt Edith rise and start down the alley. "Aunt Edith," the minister called softly, "that does not apply to you." "That isn't why I'm going," Aunt Edith responded serenely, "I smell my dinner burning up." New!
