CHEST CLINIC WELL PATRONIZED The chest clinic was a buzz of interest and yesterdays of anxious mothers and expectant children, American and foreign, swarmed the clinic rooms in the city hall, where Dr. Mumford Smith, medical director of Barlow sanitarium, and Dr. Shulmay, in charge of Los Angeles-based tubercular hospital for years, were "the coping" the little chests of Jackie and Susie, as well as of the more mature John and Susan. Among towheaded youngsters and adults, the nurses flitted about in preparation and assistance to these two physicians, who examined thoroughly, marked charts of individual cases and recommended they be put under the family physician's care in the greater number of instances. Eighteen percent of American children are found underweight, and the clinic today was in preparation of a preventive program and tuberculosis control for the county. Promised by the tubercular society at the time of the seal sale at Christmas time, a county tuberculosis nurse, Mrs. Amella A. Meagher, has been secured for a year, with expenses paid from the sales. Through Nurse Meagher, Miss Beatrice Woodward, health educational director for the state tuberculosis association, has given two weeks of her time in Orangeco, and was again present yesterday. Figures were given out at the clinic denoting that of a population of 100,000 persons in Orangeco, 169 died last year with tuberculosis. With each person averaging eight contacts, the necessity for a preventative measure is recognized. Orangeco, with its five clinics, Fullerton Monday; Anaheim yesterday; Placentia today; Garden Grove May 1 in the Baptist bungalow and Capistrano grammar school Friday, has not been able to supply the demand for examinations, for a delegation of women from Huntington Beach called today, some bringing their children, and begged for a similar clinic. SHORTRIDGE KICKS (Continued from Page One excluding Orientals shall be effective as of July 1 next—affording the state department time to perfect a treaty that will placate Japanese feeling and perhaps allow a thin trickle of immigrants from the Orient. Such a move on the part of the administration, Sherridge warned, will be most bitterly fought in both houses of congress. He pointed out to the president that such a procedure would deprive the house of representatives of any voice in the matter at all for the reason the house has no voice in ratifying treaties. The California senator was considerably aroused today over the situation. "It is only a lot of cheap John lawyers, a few misguided women and certain weak-minded people" he told newspapermen at the White House, "who want us to crawl and ask his royal majesty, the Mikado of Japan, for his kind permission to let us regulate our own purely domestic policies." "I'm not crowling and don't intend to Neither will the Pacific coast and the west."
