UNITED THEATER, 306 E. Center TONIGHT AND Tomorrow ONE OF THE GREATEST SEA STORIES EVER FILMED WITH MONTE BLUE and EVELYN BRENT in "LOVING LIES" Adapted From Peter B. Kyne's Story, "The Harbor Bar" COMING THURSDAY PAUL STANHOPES—"THE MUSIC BOX REVUE" 12 People—A Snappy Musical Comedy Monte Blue and Evelyn Brent in "Loving Lies," United Sea Captain Real In "Loving Lies" The old phrase "two heads are better than one," rightfully might be changed to "two authors are better than one" in describing "Loving Lies," which features HAUGDAHL WINNER HAUGDahl finally "got" DePalma yesterday at Ascot. The former won the toss and captured the first of the three heats in his new Miller Special. In the second heat, DePalma was in the lead when his engine suddenly went dead, just when victory TRUTH, CRUSHED, RISES LIKE YEAH By DAVIS J. WALSHI (I. N. S. Sports Editor) How teams should finish in National League. 1—Pittsburgh. 2—Cincinnati. 3—New York. 4—Chicago. 5—St. Louis. 6—Brooklyn. 7—Boston. 8—Philadelphia. NEW YORK, April 14.—Trushed to earth, will rise and like a yeast cake, as the feared. The truth about the champion New York Giants, and see it, is that, clever manipulators he may be, John McGraw will not hope to jockey his ball to another pennant in the National League race this season. We pick the giants to fit third and may be a bit ultra-mistle, at that. The club is to slip, and a baseball outfit starts slipping the end is somewhere on the berian steps. The National League camp figures to be a three club after involving New York, Pittsburgh and Cincinnati. Of the three, like the Pirates. They haven't the pitching they once knew, the club has speed and the puissance may hap has acquired, between seasons, the ability to take tough spots along the road in strike. Only a complete collage in September cost the Pirates flag in 1921, and we have been given to understand that they will have the best infield in league. Wright, the kid shortstop for the American Ass'n, has been good enough to force Maraville over to the other side of second base, and if the youth comes as he should, the Pittsburgh team will have the best infield in league. It has plenty of hitting from Schmidt, Bigbee, Traynor, Grim Carey and Barnhart, and the first six pitcher in Cooper League. Sea Captain Real In “Loving Lies” The old phrase “two heads are better than one,” rightfully might be changed to “two authors are better than one” in describing “Loving Lies,” which features Monte Blue and Evelyn Brent and provides the program at the United theatre. Peter B. Kyne, famed author of red-blooded stories, provided the basic theme of “Loving Lies” in his famous novel, “The Harbor Bar,” but Thompron Buchanan adapted the story to the screen and then produced the photoplay with an understanding of the author’s ideas which makes the finished play a double triumph. Mr. Buchanan has given the skyne narrative a twist that lifts its head and shoulders above the best of the previous sea stories and gives one a most fascinating visual adventure. Monte Blue is admirably cast in “Loving Lies.” Having once been a sailor he gives to the title role of the picture a realism and grace none but a sailor could. His supporting cast is especially competent. Evelyn Brent, is seen opposite Mr. Blue, and Joan Lowell, a 17-year-old Associated Authors discorey, plays a difficult part with delightful girl freedom. ACCOMPNIES BODY TO EASTERN HOME Funeral services for Mrs. Elizabeth Brown, 48, whose death occurred Friday were held at 2:30 today in the Huddle funeral home. The family, husband and two daughters, who have been making temporary residence in Anaheim the past four years, for the benefit of Mrs. Brown’s health, will accompany the body to the permanent home in Providence, R. I., and will not return to California. Indicating the esteem in which Mrs. Brown was held by her newly-made friends was the many lovely floral offerings, among them several made of everlasting flowers which will be taken east with the body. GETS CHILDREN THRU SCHOOL YEAR Testifying that her husband had used violence and had once swallowed poison in an attempt to commit suicide, Mrs. Margaret Robertson, Santa Ana, won a decree of divorce today against J. H. Robertson, an oil worker, Mrs. Robertson was awarded custody of her husband finally “got” DePalma yesterday at Ascet. The former won the toss and captured the first of the three heats in his new Miller Special. In the second heat, DePalma was in the lead when his engine suddenly went dead, just when victory and the $15,000 appeared to be within his grasp. The other feature of yesterday’s events was a fatal accident to Ray Weishaar on the Harley-Davidson motorcycle. The crowd numbered 32,000. ACROBAT BURGLAR HELPS SELF TO $200 Police of Santa Ana today were seeking the “Houdini” burglar who entered the F. S. Gilbert dry goods store over the week-end by descending the elevator shaft and prying open the door of the safe, then making his escape with $200 in currency. The burglar, evidently a man of great strength and plenty of nerve, slid down the elevator cable to the mezzanine floor, gained entrance to the main floor of the establishment, pryed off the door of the safe with a crowbar and cold chisel, scooped up $200 bills, ran the elevator to the top of the shaft, and escaped from the top of the building by going through a stylish headpiece that Ornate Co. Trust & Savings Bank building. The burglar did not touch rolls of silver or checks in the safe. UMPIRES NAMED NEW YORK, April 14.—John A. Heydier, president of the National league, today announced the following appointment of umpires for the opening games tomorrow: Philadelphia—O’Day and McCormick. Cincinnati—Klem and Wilson. St. Louis—Moran, Pfirman and Powell. New York—Quigley, Hart and Sweeney. ATHLETIC PROGRAM R. W. Jaffray will present the following athletic program at the Fullerton club Wednesday evening: Main Event—Orlando Miller, the Little Giant, 190 pounds, vs. Sonsa Kosac, Armenian champion, 200 pounds. Semi-final—Tom Roller, 168 pounds, of Anaheim, vs. Cyclone Lewis, 160 pounds, of Arizona. Boxing Preliminary—Wild Bill Wright, the kid shortstop from the American Assn., has been given enough to force Maranw over to the other side of second base, and if the youth comes as he should, the Pittsburgh c/o will have the best infield in league. It has plenty of hitting from Schmidt, Bigbee, Traynor, Grim Carey and Barnhart, and the first class pitchers in Cooper, Mison and Meadows with the chance that Kremer, the co-league wonder, will make the file. It looks like the Pirates’ year. The Roe has the finest fensive machine in the league in the punch is not there. In addition, Daubert may experience no difficulty in getting about on or older legs for another season. Cincinnati doesn’t look like a pennant winner; in spite of the impressive pitching staff Lague Rixey, Donohua, May, McShan and Shochan. They will just about win enough influence; however, keep the giants running their mess of the way. That is not less general impression that McGraw committed a faux pass trading Bancroft out of his infliction to be ill-advised; to nothing of a popping theory that Groh will not just lose the season at that Giant pitchers will be no longer than they have been for this seasons. It is claimed pitching has been improved by the addition of Den Bradshaw and Baldwin revered and Joe Oechsler, veteran, from Boston. However we will be poised to place more credence this belief after the young men question try to fool all of them hers some of the time in mid-August, when a ball club either begins to win or lose a pennant. The Cubs, a rising young child should make riffle in the fifth division, particularly if Holloway returns in the styles to which it is accustomed. They have much pitching than the Cardinals, we retain their punch but apparently have added little to glaring wrenes in the box behind him and in the left side of the field. Only the fact that the Dodgers are still long on pitchers prevents that outfit from being rated very consistent eighth. However, they cannot be done with the team that is shooting such men as Vance, Reuther and Grimes at opposition every third day. This is little to choose between Phillips and Braves, neither which were appreciably strongened between seasons. Superb pitching should bring the Brave home a step in front of the Fletcher entry. GETS CHILDREN THRU SCHOOL YEAR Testifying that her husband had used violence and had once swallowed poison in an attempt to commit suicide, Mrs. Margaret Roberson, Santa Ana, won a decree of divorce today against J. H. Roberson, an oil worker. Mrs. Roberson was awarded custody of her two children during the term of school each year, her husband to have them the rest of the year. Roberson was ordered to pay his wife $60 per month. ATHLETIC PROGRAM R. W. Jaffray will present the following athletic program at the Fullerton club Wednesday evening: Main Event—Orlando Miller, the Little Giant, 190 pounds, vs. Sonsa Kosac, Armenian champion, 200 pounds. Semi-final—Tom Roller, 168 pounds, of Anaheim, vs. Cyclone Lewis, 160 pounds, of Arizona. Boxing Preliminary—Wild Bill Dunlap vs. Del Davis. Elizabeth Bailey of the Fullerton high school principal's office, who has been ill is improved. ELECTED By an Overwhelming Majority CLEANLINESS AND ECONOMY ASSURED ACME CLEANERS and DYERS Phone 48 920 No. Los Angeles St. THE PLAIN DEALER, ANAHEIM, CALIF. SARGUM PROUTINGS The little town of Norwalk is again the limelight in the baseball world, Bob Philippi, pitching for that town's high school, got into the select circle of a no hit no run game. Norwalk was playing Puente on the former grounds Friday when the tryk was turned. Philippi struck out 22 men, which allowed his teammates only five fielding chances in a nine innning game. Billy Knott is looking for just such a pitcher for his Anaheim crew. Norwalk is the home of Jack Pendleton and Doty Bush was also from that little borg. In fact Norwalk has produced more good ball players than any other town of its size in the world. For 30 years it has had the name of being on the map with a good ball team. There was a long line of Pendletons before our Jack's time, then there was the Newtons, Venables, Thompson and many other familes of ones and twos. Baseball in Norwalk is handed down from father to son. In the old days Westminster was said to have more baseball talent than Norwalk, but when the Malkit brothers lost their skill baseball sorta died out there. Just a few of the older fans remember the famous old Westminster ball team. Frank Chance has taken over active management of the Chicago White Sox. The so styled Peerless Leader has been in poor health for several months and it was feared that he would not be able to take charge of the Sox this season but he is rounded to and is at the helm of the Comiskey tribe. He says that it will only take a few days for him to weed out the desirables from the undesirables. Chance is the greatest manager that ever lived in his own estimation and that may help some. A fellow has to believe in himself if he makes a success. The Sox have a fair team but not really good enough to finish in the national League. Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, New York, Chicago, St. Louis, Brooklyn, Boston, Philadelphia. NEW YORK, April 14.—Truth, led to earth, will rise again, yacht cake, as the fellow truth about the thricelon New York Giants, as we is that, clever manipulator may be, John McGraw canape to jockey his ball club other pennant in the Nation-gue race this season. National League campaign to be a three club affair New York, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati. Of the three, we are Pirates. They haven't got catching they once knew, but club has speed and the punch mayhap has acquired, between us, the ability to take the spats along the road in full light, the kid shortstop from American Ass'n, has been just enough to force Maranville to the other side of second and if the youth comes on should, the Pittsburgh club have the best infield in the past plenty of hitting from Bigbee, Traynor, Grimm, Barnhart, and three pitchers in Cooper Mort. Schwab, the financier, of forging his name to libte aggregating $325,000, came to an abrupt close today when she pleaded guilty to a charge of attempted forgery in the third degree. READ THE CLASSIFIED PAGE A match between John Hacken-schmidt, the Bear of Glendale, and Miller would draw the Anaheim fans. We all remember the great match the Bear staged with Roy Mabee, and we would like to see him in action against Miller Roy said that Old Hack gave him the hardest fight outside of Santel. Some day we would like to see Miller and Santel tangle again. Miller needs some more wrestling to put him into the best of shape. He is learning with ever encounter. We would like to see him work against a lighter man like Ted Thye or Walter Miller. Everyone has the hoof and there are a few that try to dodge Ruth's batting average in forgotten in the quarantine. A large inclosed car was halted at the county line the other day. A colored chauffeur was at the wheel, a stout elderly lady richly gowned sat beside him. "Any birds, cats or dogs," was asked. "Why no, do you think that I would attempt to break the quarantine?" asked the irritated lady. The officer opened the back door and lifted up a robe and disclosed a beribboned poodle. Then we wonder why our officers get hard boiled. The dairy and cattle industries are not the only ones to be affected by the foot and mouth disease, it affects every line. The entire state is under quarantine when it comes to shipping out our products. The situation is appalling and must have the co-operation of everyone if it is to be cleared up soon and we must sacrifice our pleasure trips and keep our pets strictly under control. The lady that tried to snuggle her dog through probably thought she knew that the dog had not been exposed to the germ of the disease but she did not know and she was breaking the law of the land. We can all co-operate with our fellow men in stamping out this disease and let us do so. CRIB MATCH Friday evening the Fullerton club's crib team will journey to Yorba Linda to play the first of a series of three matches with the Yorba Linda Crib club for the right to hold the silver cup for the coming year. The cup was won by the Yorba Linda club last year. Fullerton's players will be Measrs, C. B. Hutehinson, captain; Frank O. Fahs, R. W. Peck, Dr. Graves, Harry Wilber, O. C. SAYS GOD TOLD HER TO COMMITT-MURDER PORTLAND, Ore., April 11—Miss Nora Hollis, 49, stenographer—apparently unbalanced on the subject of religion—constantly reiterated today that the "great God Jehovah" caused her to murder Mrs. Eva Bradley, 65, here yesterday. The little woman, whose religious belief centers on the theory that Jehovah and Satan are one and the same, is held in the city jail on a formal charge of murder, pending investigation of sanity. If she is found insane she will be committed to an asylum without standing trial for the crime, authorities stated. A coroner's inquest will be held tonight. Motivo for the crime apparently was a weird case of devil worship linked up with modern publicity methods. Miss Hollis is the author of several publications on religious subjects. She frankly told police she hoped to attract attention to her writings by claying the woman who was her benefactor and friend. Mrs. Bradley was shot three times, without warning, as she sat sewing in her home. Miss Hollis surrendered to the police. PULP OF ORANGES FINE STOCK FOOD A commercially cheap dehydrating process is the only thing required to make orange pulp a highly-successful marketable feed for cattle. B. S. Drake, manager of the California Citrus Pruit Juice Co., indicated today. Drake is uncertain whether his concern will have perfected the process in time to utilize this waste this year or not. Probably not. Tons of the pulp is being sold daily by the Exchange By-Products Co. at San Dimas to dairymen near at hand who can use the stuff at once. Used within 48 hours, the food keeps and doesn't need to be dried out. The pulp is better and cheaper feed for herds than beet pulp, according to H. B. Bernis, chairman of the Ontario-Chino cow testing ass'n, who says he uses about four tons weekly, costing $4.50 per ton for a herd of 70 cows. The Bernis adds, is good, bulky food and forms, with enclosure, a well-advised feed for the dairy herd.
