It all happened in the midst of the filming of one of the exterior scenes upon the massive "set" in the San Fernando Valley for Fairbanks' United Artists picture, "The Mark of Zorro," which will be at the United Theatre, beginning tomorrow. The "set" which is an exact replica of the City of Los Angeles before the advent of the Americans, is nestled at the foot of the Sierra Madre Mountains. Some hundred yards or so behind a hill, smoke was seen to rise. At first no one paid any particular attention to it, until it became denser. Then a couple of lonely forest rangers made their appearance upon the "set" in an exhausted condition and apprized "Doug" that a forest fire was raging and threatened the devastation of the entire village in the vicinity. According to the laws of the state it is obligatory for all able bodied men to assist in extinguishing forest fires. No persuasion was necessary. The men in Mr. Fairbanks' company without exception rushed off to the scene of the danger and after battling the conflagration, finally managed to subdue it. The next day the villagers sent their spokesman around to "Doug" to voice their appreciation of his efforts in warding off certain disaster. Incidentally the genial "Doug" saw that all those who assisted received double remuneration. SPORT BRIEFSE Bad weather prevented Yale and Columbia from starting their baseball season as scheduled. Austria is contemplating entering a team for the Davis cup this year. Yankee teams have entered in 16 Olympic events for the 1924 season. News that Battling Sikl has gone on the wagon is interesting. Most of the time he is in it. The French have lifted the ban on German prizefighters. The rest of the world should demand either an apology or an explanation. Krug used four pitchers and Killifer three. Had not George Payno injured his ankle in the second innning in sliding into third after clouting a triple the Angels might have clinched the contest sooner. Payne started on the mound and had not allowed an earmark of a hit. Three other Seraphs tried their luck at deceiving the opposition with Long Tom Hughes receiving credit for the day's victory. Wally Hood's home run in the last of the ninth tied up things at 5 all between the two teams. Hood's bingle went directly over the scoreboard, a place where not more than ten balls have traveled before. BARBARA WORTH HOTEL BURNED LOS ANGELES, April 10.—The Barbara Worth Hotel at El Centro, one of the most palatial in Imperial Valley, was practically destroyed by fire this morning. TAGGING THE BASES Dutch Reuther fanned George Herman Ruth thrice in succession at Greensboro, N. C., but Witt's only hit was a homer with the bases filled and the Yankees beat the Dodgers, 11 to 8, although batted two to one. The Babe is not hitting as he might. The story is now that Charley Hollocher, recalcitrant shortstop, will come to terms with the Cubs. They always do. "Peter" Rabbit, recruit outfielder of the White Sox, told his bedtime story in the middle of the afternoon at Evansville, Ind. He got three hits, and with McClellan, played a leading part in the Sox defeat of the Giants 5 to 4. Those arriving in New York in advance of the Giants are not exactly enamored by Young Jack-son as a successor to Bancroft in the Giants infield. They are still raving in Philadelphia over the home run hitting of Al Simmons, the American Ass'n terror picked up by Mack. Al socked three in a row off Philly pitchers.
