NEW METHOD OF ESTIMATING CROP An entirely different and more certain method of estimating the walnut crop in the Anaheim district was announced today by Walter Ross, secretary-manager of the Anaheim Walnut Growers' Association. Instead of an estimate 16 per hectare too high, as Manager Carlie Thorpe's original figure on the local crop was last year, one is exact as the progress toward maturity permits will be possible. Thorpe estimates a maximum saving of $250,000 by the new method. Row has appointed a committee of 25 representative growers, each possessing not less than 10 acres and living on his own ranch. The average owned amounts to approximately 25 per cent of the total. Each of these 25 growers will estimate the crop on his own ranch as of July 1, say, the work beginning in June. Thereafter there will be probably monthly estimates, deductions being made as necessary, or revisions where development has been unexpectedly slow or fast. When the crop finally is ready to harvest, as accurate an idea of the real tonnage of nuts as can be humanly arrived at will be possible. The plan is being put into operation thrueout the territory of the California Walnut Growers' Awn. Heretofore Manager Thorpe with some aid from the secretary-managers has made the estimate.
