WHERE IS NEXT
SO. CAL. FIELD?
(By Killwood J. Munger)
The question before the oil fraternity of Southern California is the location of the next oil field. There never was a time in the history of the industry when there were as many wildcat wells drilling as at the present. There are some forty wildcat wells drilling in the Los Angeles Basin and it is a rather remarkable fact that aside from two or three none of them are exhibiting any showings that would cause any excitement. A survey of the southland shows three wells drilling at Anaheim, one of them down past the 4200 mark and no showings of consequence. At Artesia a string of 6 I-4 has been landed at 4885 in the 5233 foot well and only a small producer is hoped for at heat.
The Oakridge Oil Co. seems to be fighting a losing battle with water at Bandini, efforts of three months having failed to accomplish anything. The Fortuna Oil Co. is reported to have 4000 feet of hole at El Segundo and not seen anything exciting. At Fairview a test hole is down 5509 feet and still in the brown shale. The Petroleum Products Syndicate well south of Santa Fe Springs is at 5002 with casing trouble. The Wilshire Oil Co.'s Maywood well has passed 5290 feet and has nothing encouraging to report. The Wucherer-Gray Oil Co. have made 5200 feet in a well on the Irvine Hills and have water. The Birch Oil Co. has taken over the old Newtelle-Santa Monica well and think that something can be made out of it at 4587 feet, but will probably be disappointed. The western extension of Santa Fe Springs is getting close to 5000 feet on the Burbank well and has found nothing that looks like oil.
The wildcat wells of encouraging nature at this date include the Union Oil Co.'s Rosecrans, a well that has made a good showing but is held up with water trouble, the Newport Petroleum Corp.'s well which has shown some actual oil but now is on a pumping test to exhaust water, and the Bardeen Oil Co.'s test well in the San Joaquin Valley.
SISTERS INHERIT $10,000
Margaret Porter and Juliette Smith, sisters of Santa Ana, Hottie Tidball, Santa Ang., and Francis Brydon, of Los Angeles, are named as heirs of the estate of J. H. Maley, who left property valued at $10,000, according to a petition for probate on file today with the superior court by W. W. Halesworth, executor.
DOMINGUEZ WELL OUTPUT DECLINES
The Union Oil Co.'s Hellman No. 1 at Domiguez started off at a 150 barrels an hour and looked like the premier well of the Dominguez field. For some reason or rather at this time not fully known the well failed to hold up to its initial output for very long and is now rated at about 600 barrels.
L. B. Chase No. 1 is drilling at about 4350 feet and expects now with the indications showing to plek up the oil sand at about 4560 or 4600. So far the Chasa well is checking about 325 feet deeper than the Union Oil Co.'s Carson No. 1A a 2600 barrel well at 4321 feet.
The General Petroleum's Austin No. 1 has passed the 4900 foot mark and to-date has not found anything particularly encouraging. The Austin well marks the deepest test well in the field to date. Good progress is being made on the General Petroleum's White well drilling at 4300.
The Davis-Macmillan Oil Company has resumed drilling and has some 4556 feet of hole made at well No. 8. This well stood idle for a number of months awaiting field developments.
Julian Petroleum Corporation's Pico is drilling at close to 4800 feet and to date has not run across the pay sand. It would appear that the Pico well will have to go deep and the hope of production lies in the finding of a deep sand. Drilling progress is excellent, the hole is in the best of shape.
Long Beach slipped down to a daily output of only 200,000 bbls last week. This is a new low level for the great Signal Hill field and would seem to indicate that

FRIDAY
By Their Fruits
Read Mt. 12:31-37. Text 12:33. For the tree is known by its fruit.
"The best thing about a piece of work well done is that it registers itself in the personality of the man who does it, and he goes forward fit for a more important task than he would be fit for if he had left a slovenly piece of work behind him. If he does his work well he lives under the great law of enlarging opportunity."
MEDITATION: Some try to camouflage the poverty of their spiritual life and lack of moral principle by smooth talk and occasional generous deeds. They may succeed for a time in decelerating others, but in the long run such efforts result in failure, for the pretender will forget his pose and his own inner life will stand revealed in all its poverty and insincerity. But greatness of heart and honesty of purpose are self-revealing.
PERSONAL QUESTION: What growth do I detect in my personality as fruit of the spirit of Christ?
PRAYER: Our Heavenly Father, we pray that our souls may be like well watered gardens. Give us a hearty will to bring forth fruit pleasing to thee. May we not be contented with the good but ever seek the best, through the indwelling of thy spirit. Amen.

R. R. LEGISLATION STARTS LONG TRIP
WASHINGTON, April 4. Railroad legislation was started on its long tedious journey through congress today with the opening of hearings on two important bills.
The house interstate and foreign commerce committee had before it a resolution directing the Interstate Commerce Commission to revise the entire railroad rate structure to reduce rates on farm products.
The merchant marine committee considered a bill changing a section of the merchant marine act of 1920, which gives preferential railroad rates on thru freight from the interior for export when carried in American ships.
Revision of the railroad freight structure was commended by President Coolidge in his address to congress last December.
Alfred T. Thom, chairman of the railroad executives, explained to the committee difficulties in the way of freight rate reductions because of bad financial conditions of the farm produce carrying lines.
The movement to prevent granting of preferential railroad freight rates on exports carried in American bottoms had its start among those who fear reprisals by Great Britain and the Japanese governments for protection of their ships which trade on routes to the United States.
