DAILY GREETING TO OUR READERS
Of all the mortal joys, the joy of action is the most intense; indeed, there is no other joy. And the higher the action, the intenser the joy.

TO CHURCH, IS CHOICE OF JUDGE WILBUR
When Curtis D. Wilbur, en route from California to Washington to assume duty as Secretary of the Navy, found himself in Chicago on Sunday with a short stop between trains, he told a friend who met him that he chose to put in the time attending church. There spoke the God-fearing man. Californians know Judge Wilbur as a Christian gentleman.
The Navy Department is safe in the hands of a man of recognized abilities whose heart, on the Sabbath turns to a house of worship. There are many men of this type in government service. Americans have reason to thank God and there are so many Christian men in public service. They give the right complexion to official life. They inspire confidence. The government at Washington is safe, because men of conscience and of godly impulses are at the head of the government. The President of the United States is a Christian, as was his predecessor—as have been a long lime of Presidents. There is and there always has been godliness in high places, in this land.
Let no day pass without spending a few minutes in reading good literature.

SAFETY, SUCCESS, FOR WORLD AVIATORS!
It is typical of the daring, the intrepidity and the resourcefulness of American manhood—this momentous journey, designed to be the first air trip around the world. Los Angeles County, California, has the honor of being the starting point. The fervent prayers and the hearty good wishes of the American people attend these gallant young Americans—who, in the air, are to rival the feat of Magellan on the water. May there be no mishap! May this great feat be achieved without tragedy! May this glory of epochal achievement come to these ardent young Americans!
It is an enterprise attended by hazards of varied forms. It will ta the nerve, the endurance, the skill and the resourcefulness of these trained aviators. Preparations have been made with scientific care and with intelligent foresight. But perils or obstacles unforseen may lie in the path of the brave adventurers of the air. Even though the journey should not be wholly successful in attaining its objectives, yet it will be a trail-blazing for future aerial triumphs.
The world will hang with rapt interest upon news reports from the globe circling aviators. And nowhere will the momentous flight be followed with keener interest than here in Southern California.
Political action should be based upon intelligence, broad thinking and conscientious, independent conviction.

What Editors Are Saying
THE HUMAN GEORGE WASHINGTON—San Bernardino Sun
That the human side of Washington was neglected by his earlier biographers is a commonplace. They made a rather stiff and starch-ed figure of one who had his share of mortal frailties. Yet it was in a sense a sound instinct which bade them dwell on his heroic achievements. These were the substance of his character; the gossipy touches later writers have added do not materially modify our general conception of it. The chief danger of the kind of adulation bestowed on Washington was that it made him too much a prig, and he was anything but that.
Yet if we take the evidence of his contemporaries there was something about him that was remote and apart. He had a warm affection, to be sure, for those whom he took to his heart; Lafayette's is a case in point. By the same token he could awake a warm affection for himself. The historic scene in Fraunces Tavern, where he bade farewell to the officers who had served under him so many years, illustrates this phase of his personality. But he would not be called in these days "a good mixer." The manners of his time were not free and easy, and he was characteristically a man of his time, bred in the Virginia traditions, which were those of the English country gentry.
Probably we understand him no better than our age understands his. Nevertheless, he had the simplicity of true greatness. There was never anything complicated in his motives or his behaviour. It is idle to read into his character subtleties that did not exist. And why should we wish to do so? There is a dignity in its strong, firm outlines entirely harmonious with his military and civil achievements. The heroic is remote from common experience. And Washington was a hero for whom reverence is the natural tribute.
