The Line that leads to Youth
Biding attention and seemingly certain of receiving it, come the juvenile modes that this spring seem to have set a decided pace of their own. Dame Fashion has allied herself with style designers and is bent on enhancing the natural charm of youth with a fine array of bright colors, novel fabrics, effective trimmings in modes especially adaptable to the needs of the growing girl.
Little woolen frocks, especially designed for general and play wear, come in sand trimmed with vividly colored plaids. The straight-line little frock, beltless, modelled after the leading mode for women, and made with ragiian sleeves is quite popular. For the miss under eight the bloomer dress is the favored choice with the bloomers made of harmonizing fabrics and edged with dainty lace or embroidery.
Silip-On Dresses
Full sashes that tie in the back are used on the slip-on dress. The Dutch mode with a tight-fitting, short-waisted bodice and full skirt, is another pleasing and new variation. Ginghams, chambrays and volles in effective new patterns as well as plain weaves are featured.
When Miss Six to Ten is entertained or enacts the role of tiny hostess she wears a frock of crepe georgette or crept Romain in one of the delicate pastel shades. Small silver roses in bouquet or garland effects are effective trimmings.
Novel Trimmings
Feather-stitchings and cross-stitchings are among the favorite trimmings especially for the tiny girl's frocks. Cross-stitching is often used to bring out the checked design in ginghams. Feather-stitchings are cleverly employed to outline applique patterns. Often these fancy stitchings are in contrasting colors and add a very definite charm to the most simple little dress.
For school or general wear the growing girl is certain to prefer a few frocks in the tailored mode. Fashioned with Peter Pan collar and cuffs of white or tan linen, with leather belt of contrasting color, and novel pockets these trig dresses seem to express the boyant spirit of youth.
Hats for school and general wear are of felt or straw and silk combined. Shapes are small and close-fitting with the tiny roll adds a novel effect. The wood shades and Chinese blue or red are very much in vogue for the Junior Miss.
MEN'S CLOTHING PRICES WILL SOAR
There is no possibility of lower prices for new style men's clothing this year, according to the results of a careful study of economic conditions in the clothing industry. On the contrary, all costs of materials and production are tending higher, but manufacturers and retailers will absorb costs rather than pass them on to the consumer.
Cloth, trimming, labor costs and selling expenses are all stabilized at high levels and any change will tend to be higher rather than lower. Lower retail prices on new goods cannot therefore be expected. And as costs on clothing for next fall and winter have already been determined by prices quoted on cloth and by labor contracts, no downward revision may be expected this year.
The outlook for spring is viewed with general optimism and if weather conditions are at all propitious, business in the trade should be satisfactory. The industry is feeling the effects of good employment conditions throughout the country and the high purchasing power of the public. The unusual activity in such important industries as construction, steel, railroads, automobiles, etc., is being reflected in a good demand for clothing. And if the spring season is normal, there is no doubt that, with stocks cleared, the fall season will be promising.
A Little Talk on Thrift
By S. W. STRAUS
It is good thrift not only to make the most of one's time, but to stretch one's years of useful activity to the greatest possible span.
Undoubtedly the popular viewpoint lorevity is changing. The average man is not considered "through" at as early an age as was the case two or three generations ago.
Most of the generals in the Civil war were under 45. In the World War the British generals averaged 63.9 years of age. The French average was 60.5.
NEWER FABRICS IN BIG VARIETY
Seldom indeed has the woman whose deft fingers can fashion her own wardrobe been so assured of a wide range of selection in fabrics. So many of the newer materials are offered already embroidered or so richly designed that there is small need for trimmings of any kind.
The first impression of the new fabrics is of their exquisite beauty, both of weave and design. One notes the influence of Chinese, Russian and Oriental effects in color combinations and designs. One of the most interesting new silk weaves for summer is called "Crepafatas," which is simply a slight embroidery stitch forming in little dots a design of Greek keys, and other patterns.
Imported ratines appear in large block designs beneath which one notes small round designs. Volles, linens, crepes and silks are all richly embroidered. Several silks are completely covered with Chinese characters and figures. This Spring promises truly to be a most colorful one and is certain to bring renewed spirit and energy and greater charm to every woman.
THREE-QUARTER
Considering every phase of the spring wardrobe, a fashion right coat must be one of your first spring considerations. There are sports coats of suede or velour finished woolens. There are street coats of fine twills, woolens and satins. There are coats with cape backs and scarf collars—all for spring, all three-quarter length.

The average age of those who sat at the peace conference in Paris in 1919 was 63.
One of New York's active financiers of today was an adviser of Abraham Lincoln. A great and useful industrial leader in this country is midway between 70 and 80. An active and honored leader of organized labor is four years beyond the allotted three score and ten.
One of the most profound members of the legal profession in America is nearing 80. Our greatest inventor is several years beyond his 70th milestone. An active, forceful leader in educational though is nearing 90.
A New York newspaper recently gave the average age of its working staff as 47, with six members between 60 and 70 and three past 70. One was still doing his day's work at 79. Yet journalism is popularly considered a young man's profession.
One might travel every walk of life and find these at their places of duty who are beyond the Biblical limitation.
The recent death of President Wilson was universally regarded as "untimely"—the result of abnormal responsibilities during the war rather than the natural wearing out of the machine.
It is an inspiring thought that we are learning more and more to give a just appraisal to the values that come only from long experience. And as these valuations continue to find their rightful levels, the universal incentive to prolong one's years of useful activity is correspondingly stimulated.
Each year that can be added to the period of usefulness to one's self and the others increases the sum total of human happiness and accomplishment."
"A POM-POM" CREPE IS NOVEL WEAVE FOR SPRING COAT
A very smart new coat for spring wear is pictured here. It is fashioned of "Pom-pom" crepe and trimmed with a light brown fur. It conforms to the straight, slim lines that are the mode this season as they have been for some time past."
