COLORADO DAM SHOULD BE EXPEDITED
The Bonlder Canyon dam is a step nearer to consideration by Congress, in definite form and with concrete purpose. Secretary of the Interior Work, after delay which irritated friends and proponents of the dam project, finally has reported to Congress with reference to the Swing-Johnson measure, pending before the national legislators. Secretary Work makes no recommendation, except the broad general one that the national government should treat the Colorado River as a "local menace" and should determine at once a definite plan for its control and conversion into a national asset.
It is to be hoped that Arizona soon may ratify the compact which has been acted upon favorably by the six other states lying in the Colorado River Basin. This non-action by Arizona is a handicap to those who are pressing the Boulder Dam project before Congress. With the seven states of the Colorado Basin working in unison for the Boulder Dam, Congress would have no loophole through which to escape the insistence that favorable action be taken without delay.

One of the important factors in the development of our country is one of the best indices of progress—is the amount proved highway constructed taking place.
Just as the development nation's steam transport lines a few generations ago led the beginning of a new progress of our people present period of high provement is bringing about idly improving conditions.
According to figures that have been compiled by the B.Public Roads and the Automobile Chamber of Commerce we are adding 35,000 of improved highway to tem each year and now have stantially 400,000 miles of this type.
In 1904 we had 153,000 of rural highways improve some type of servicing, so the last two decades about 000 miles have been enough to circle the great times.
These figures, of course, represent the total mileage proved and unimproved roadways in the United States on January 1, 1904, a gain of 789,000 since 1904.
This amazing development highways has in many ways lutionized modern life. Children of the Heavenly Father
Read Mt. 18:1-14. Text: 18:3.
Verily I say unto you, Except ye turn, and become as little children, ye shall in no wise enter into the kingdom of heaven.
"Children ask their parents for many things that they do not get, and they get many things that they do not ask for. This does not warrant their concluding that it is useless ever to ask. Some things they get only when and because they ask. And they always have their parents' love, however much they may be wisely left to learn some things by painful experience. Prayer is no device for eliminating the necessity of learning some things by experience in living."
MEDITATION: The supreme quality of child life is its response to affection. Through affection the life of a human father comes in touch with the life of his child. However little the child may know of the perplexities' of the father's business and however much the child may be at a loss in his father's factory or office, when they come together in the realm of affection each understands the other

A Little Talk on Thrift
By S. W. STRAUS

One of the important factors in the development of our country—one of the best indices of national progress—is the amount of improved highway construction now taking place.
Just as the development of the nation's steam transportation lines a few generations ago marked the beginning of a new era in the progress of our people, so the present period of highway improvement is bringing about rapidly improving conditions.
According to figures that have been compiled by the Bureau of Public Roads and the National Automobile Chamber of Commerce we are adding 35,000 miles of improved highway to our system each year and now have substantially 400,000 miles of roadways of this type.
In 1904 we had 153,000 miles of rural highways improved with some type of servicing, so that in the last two decades about 250,000 miles have been added or enough to circle the globe ten times.
These figures, of course, do not represent the total mileage of improved and unimproved rural roadways in the United States which on January 1, 1922, was 2,941,294, a gain of 789,000 miles since 1904.
This amazing development of highways has in many ways revolutionized modern life. Thousands of persons who formerly spent their lives in the great cities are now getting out into the country where their appreciation of this great land is made more comprehensive and where they are able to cultivate gardens and secure the many benefits of semi-rural existence. POEMS THAT LIVE
TONIGHT
I love thee, mournful, sober-suited Night!
When the faint moon, yet lingering in her wane,
And veil'd in clouds, with pale uncertain light,
Hangs o'er the waters of the restless main.
In deep depression sunk, the enfeebled mind
Will to the deaf cold elements complain,
And tell the embosom'd grief, however vain,
To sullen surges and the view-
less wind.
Tho' no repose on thy dark breast I find,
I still enjoy thee—cheerless as thou art;
For in thy quiet gloom the exhausted heart
Is calm, though wretched; hopeless, yet resigned.
While to the winds and waves its sorrows given,
May reach—though lost on earth—the ear of Heaven!

"What you need is a rest, Mrs. North. You are a bit run down, is all. Take a complete rest for a while, plenty of fresh air, frequent baths and be careful about suitable clothing. That is all."
At home that evening Mr. North asked his wife about the result of the consultation with the doctor. "Oh, he says I ought to have a vacation," Mrs. North reported. "He recommended motor car rides, a trip to the seashore and a new dress or two."
