I am advised that the proposition cannot be successfully or truthfully questioned. "Having in mind, therefore, the subject of this investigation and having also in mind the widespread use in the public press of my name as one who might have had more connection with the naval oil leases or with the companies, individual or public officials who did have connection with the leases of naval oil reserves, I want to make now the following detailed and emphatic statements of facts: "I have absolutely no knowledge regarding any leases upon naval oil reserves made at any time to any person or company except such knowledge that I, in common with all the rest of the American public have received persons which I am connected with may have carried some government advertising but, of course, it would be recognized that this is a matter not handled by me personally. "Because there have been published indefinite and unfounded rumors from which the inference might be drawn that I had participated in the purchase of oil stocks, I desire to tell you just what stock transactions I have had. Only twice in my life have I bought New York stock exchange stocks and here are the facts about these two transactions: In November, 1922, I bought 2000 shares of Pure Oil stock thru Hibbs & Co., Washington, D.C. I sold this stock in February, 1923, thru Hutton & Co., Palm Beach, Fla., at a profit of about $5500. This profit was entirely mine. My understanding is that the Pure Oil Co. is a company that has never had any connection with any government leases and is in no wise concern." Asserts Smith Gave Life for Daughter (Continued from First Page) She said the beneficiaries the second will were H. Daugherty, Mell Daugherty, mund St. John, Louise St. and herself. "What other stock did Smith give you?" might have had some connection with the naval oil leases or with the companies, individual or public officials who did have connection with the leases of naval oil reserves. I want to make now the following detailed and emphatic statements of facts: "I have absolutely no knowledge regarding any leases upon naval oil reserves made at any time to any person or company except such knowledge that I, in common with all the rest of the American public have received from newspaper reports. "As to the so-called Sinclair leases and companies: "I never have known anything about any lease of any oil land to the Sinclair company and know nothing about this except what I have read in the newspapers. I don't know Mr. Harry F. Sinclair and have no recollection of ever having met him even in a casual way. I have never had any interest of any kind directly or indirectly, for myself or any other person, in any of the so-called companies. I did not even know that there was such a thing as the Mammoth Oil Co. until I saw it mentioned in the press reports in connection with this investigation. I did know, as anyone who reads newspapers would have known, that there was a company known as the Sinclair Consolidated Oil Co., but I have never had any connection with it or any interest in it and have never owned or had any interest in a single share of the stocks of that company or any company in any way connected with it. "In a word, I had no knowledge of or connection with Mr. Sinclair's oil leases or his companies or his business or his transactions. "I do not know Mr. Edward L. Doheny, and so far as I am aware I have never seen him in my life. I did not know that he had any connection with leases upon naval oil reserves until I read of them in the newspapers. "I do not know the names of Mr. Doheny's companies, but I am informed that he is president of the Mexican Petroleum Co. and of the Pan-American Petroleum Co., and that these companies, like most large oil companies, have branches. "I have never owned directly or indirectly for myself or in connection with any other person whatever a single share of stock in the Mexican Petroleum Co., the Pan-American Petroleum Co. or any of their dependent companies, or, so far as I know, any company that Mr. Doheny had any interest in or connection with. "I know nothing about the contract or leases between the government and the Doheny companies." Again, in brief, I had no connection with interest in, or transaction with Mr. Edward L. Doe. I bought 2000 shares of Pure Oil stock thru Hibbs & Co., Washington, D.C. I sold this stock in February, 1923, thru Hutton & Co., Palm Beach, Fla., at a profit of about $5500. This profit was entirely mine. My understanding is that the Pure Oil Co. is a company that has never had any connection with any government leases and is in no wise concerned in this investigation. In March, 1923, I bought 2000 shares of Bethlehem Steel shares thru Hutton & Co., Palm Beach, Fla. I sold it thru Hibbs & Co., in December, 1923, at a loss of approximately $30,000. This loss was entirely mine. This is the entire story of any New York stock exchange stocks ever purchased or sold by me. I have never been interested in the purchase of any Sinclair or Doheny oil stocks, directly or indirectly. The press has repeatedly carried reports that an important witness was negotiating for immunity from prosecution in consideration of the disclosure by him of sensational facts. The press reports have too clearly indicated that I was that important witness for me not to be sensible to that imputation. The facts are: First. I have no knowledge of any such facts and therefore could not disclose any to this committee or to any senator or other committee person whatever. Second, I have no need for any immunity of any kind and I have neither asked for it nor authorized any person to do so. The only consideration I have sought is that which would excuse me from appearing on the witness stand. You have examined with considerable fullness telegraphic correspondence between my employees, my counsel, several of my friends, and myself. I believe that you will agree that those telegrams may be divided into three classes: First, those that brought me information. Second, those that show my desire to avoid appearing as a witness. Third, those that relate to my personal and business affairs. Certainly none of them indicate that I had any connection with the oil leases which you are investigating and none of them could so indicate. I am now ready to answer any relevant questions upon the assurance and confidence of course, that I will not be called upon to answer any questions which the law protects as privileged between my counsel and myself." Asserts Smith gave Life for Daugherty (Continued from First Page) She said the beneficiaries the second will were H. Daugherty, Mell Daugherty, mund St. John, Louise St. and herself. “What other stock did Smith give you?” Pure Oil. How much? Twenty-two shares. Did he discuss this stock? Yes; it was very brief didn't want to embarrass him. Tell us about it. He didn't say where he it," she added. "You see White Motor stock was new he discussed it freely. He told me to keep my own coat and so I asked him very few tions." “Did he speak of the oil as a gift?” No, as a deal." What deal? I don't know, he just said had made another deal." The inquiry struck a snail soon as it started when Paul Land, attorney for Daugherty manded the right to make a statement before Mrs. Stinson heard. Senator Wheeler immediately objected and moved to land's request be refused. The motion carried with ior Brookhart of Iowa, chair and Senator Ashurst, Dem Arizona, voting to sustain Wer's objection while Sen Moses, Republican of New Hshire, and Jones of Washington voted to let Daugherty's co-make his statement. At Wheeler's request, the mittee finally voted 3 to consider Howland's statement. The examination of Mrs. son was then started by Wha She said she had been acquainted with Daugherty "for years." testified that she married Smith on November 10, 1908 was divorced from him "a year a half later." When Smith's name was mentioned by Wheeler, the news showed great emotion lips trembling and tears staggered from her eyes. Smith supported her after divorce until the time that he hed himself in Daugherty's account here, she said. What was the relation between Jesse Smith and the attorney before he became attentive? asked Wheeler. They were intimate friend said Mrs. Stinson. "Mr. came to Washington the year Harding was elected." What relationship did it occupy in Daugherty after h "I have never owned directly or indirectly for myself or in connection with any other person whatever a single share of stock in the Mexican Petroleum Co., the Pan-American Petroleum Co. or any of their dependent companies, or, so far as I know, any company that Mr. Doheny had any interest in or connection with. "I know nothing about the contract or leases between the government and the Doheny companies. "Again, in brief, I had no connection with, interest in, or transaction with Mr. Edward L. Doheny or any company or business of his at any time in my life. "Former Secretary of the Interior Albert B. Fall has for several years been a personal friend of mine. My relations with him have, however, been personal and never official. I have never at any time had any official transactions with the interior department of the United States government. "As regards the navy department and Secretary Denby, I can say the same as I have already said about the interior department. My personal acquaintance with Secretary Denby has been a slight one. I have had no business relations whatever with the navy department. The newspa." GARMENT MAKERS ATTACK OFFICER CHICAGO. LESS THAN HALF VOTES REGISTERED George Varnum attended the "100 Per Cent Registration Luncheon" held at the Hotel Clark, Los Angeles. The meeting was called by the county chairmen of all the political parties and was wholly non-partisan. Over 50 representatives of organizations, including the school heads, the C. of C., Veterans Legion, women's clubs, county registrars, etc., were in attendance. The startling fact that but little over half the voters are registered revealed a deplorable apathy which is to be overcome by concerted action of every public and Smith supported her after the force until the time that he killhimself in Daugherty's apartment here, she said.
