MERCHANTS WILL HEAR CREDIT MAN J. Conway, of Santa Ana, a representative of the Orange-co. Credit Ass'n, will address the Merchants' section of the C. of C. tonight at their monthly supper in the Elks' Club, on the subject of credit. The affair opens at 6:30. The advisability of having an auction clearing house to aid merchants in keeping their stock fresh will be discussed. The matter of the industrial drive also is expected to come up. President Roscoe B. Young will preside. Secretary Geo. W. Reid of the C. of C. will attend, but does not expect to speak. IMMUNITY OFFERED TO HUBERT KITTLE LOS ANGELES, March 10.—Hubert Kittle, former police officer and special investigator for the district attorney's office, now held incommunicado in the Santa Monica city jail on charges of receiving stolen property in connection with the investigation of the biggest Los Angeles crime ring scandal in years, was today expected to accept or refuse an offer of immunity if he would make a complete confession, which it is believed by the authorities, will reveal the operations of a crime ring which had for its promoters former officers. Deputy sheriffs, with the offer of immunity as their "ace in the hole," were to grill Kille today. Harry Jayne, deputy city assessor, and Herbert Oelke, deputy county assessor, turned the matter over to Sleeper today after futile efforts to collect before the circus left Anaheim. The circus was in Santa Ana today. The assessors, who made the assessment because the circus was here March 1 as the law requires, stated the figure was nominal, "less than the value of one elephant." Circus officials stated they were a little hard up right now after being in winter quarters. They said they had spent $20,000 since landing in Anaheim last November. Certain C. o C. members urged the assessors "to forget it." ROTH SUIT UP FOR HEARING TOMORROW LOS ANGELES, March 10.—Whether Herman L. Roth, Los Angeles and New York attorney recently convicted and sentenced for extortion, will prosecute his suit for $2,450,000 against Princess Hassan, scheduled for trial tomorrow, was not definitely known today. Herbert Cutler Brown, attorney for the defendant, whose true name is Ola Humphrey. Hassan Broadwood, formerly of Oakland and widow of the late Prince Ibrahim Hassen of Cairo, Egypt, stated he was anxious to have the suit tried. SEEKING DAMAGES FROM AUTO CRASH In the wage of a $1500 court suit for damages to an automobile, a second action for $42,190 damages for personal injury was on file today in the superior court against R. Men advancing in to entries off the main passage carry a cage containing a canary, the bird giving first evidence of the presence of poisonous gases. Thousands of people poured into the sorrowing little mining town over Sunday, making it necessary to establish deadlines approximately a mile from the disaster. Hundreds of sorrowing widows and orphaned children remained as close to the mine mouth as possible, waiting for their loved ones to be brot from the death shaft. Only spasmodic outbursts of noisy grief occurred and for the most part the women were brave and calm. Mine company officials this morning declined to make an official statement on the probable cause of the explosion, but the general opinion continued to prevail that it was caused by the accumulation of dust. Offers of assistance to the stricken town were received from all sections of the state as well as from points outside. Governor Charles R. Maybee is on the ground preparing to provide immediate relief as required by the families of the stricken miners. Western representatives of the American Red Cross have also issued orders to furnish relief thru the Utah organization. SEEKING DAMAGES FROM AUTO CRASH In the wage of a $1500 court suit for damages to an automobile, a second action for $42,100 damages for personal injury was on file today in the superior court against R. A. Mosher and the Ventura Refining Co. Ruth S. Ewing, owner of a Los Angeles theater, was plaintiff in the second action, having been a passenger in her husband's sedan which was wrecked January 4 in a collision on the El Toro boulevard. H. E. Ewing, the husband, was plaintiff in the first action. W. U. WINS SUIT WASHINGTON, March 10. The Western Union Telegraph Co. won in U.S. supreme court today its appeal to prevent payment to J. A. Czizek, Oakland, Calif., of $4500 damages awarded for failure to deliver a telegram filed at Boise, Idaho. Lower courts held there was negligence because the telegram was never started and stipulations for sent messages protecting the company carried on the blanks did not relieve liability. The supreme court reversed these decisions. BARBER FINED $500 L. Buelna, Plaeontia barber, was at liberty today, having paid a fine of $500 in Justice J. B. Cox's court on a charge of having liquor in his possession. ANTON LANG representing Je Passion Play; a photo of he is today. "The war has worked hard part. This phase was apted by a Chicago grand jury, which investigated the veterans but reported it had found evidence of speculation by one or more officials of the government using official information. 4—Alleged sale of paroles also charged by the Chicago grand jury and said to have involved members of congress. In addition, the investigating committee has summoned Gus Jones, chief of the department of justice agents on the Mexican border, to inquire into reports that he interviewed John Campo, a Mexican secret service operative, after the latter was called as a committee witness. The committee locked upon Camp as one of its "star" witnesses in the alleged revolt conspiracy and were anxious to learn whether any effort was made to prevent him restifying. GOODS POUR OUT! WOULD REGAIN SIGN FOR REMOVAL DAUGHERTY, ELKINS BOUGHT SINCLAIR WASHINGTON, March 10. Attorney General Daugherty and Senator Elkins appeared to be the only government officials who have dealt in Sinclair oil stock, it was announced this afternoon by Senator Walsh of the senate oil investigation committee. Walsh said that a search of stock brokers records by expert accountants had revealed no record of transactions by officials other than Daugherty and Elkins, both of whom have admitted their operations in Sinclair stock. DEFEAT ATTEMPT TO REDUCE TAXES WASHINGTON, March 10. Failure of the plan of the administration to reduce 1923 income taxes regardless of the fate of the general tax reduction bill appeared certain this afternoon. Republican members of the house ways and means committee, after considering the situation at length decided that no action would be taken on the resolution providing for such a reduction.
