DE PALMA VERSUS HAUGDAHL SUNDAY
LOS ANGELES, March 8 — Fickle sums of Italy, who cheered their countryman, DePalma, to victory at Ascot in the Helmet event, have switched their affections to Haugdahl, Scandinavian speed king, who has chosen a giant Flat for the championship quadrangular match next Sunday. The Flat, product of the famed shops at Toreno, Italy, is reputed to be the fastest dirt track car in the world and is the only machine that DePalma refuses to drive his little Miller against.
From points as far north as Frisco, delegations of Italian colonies are coming to Ascot for the Sunday competitions, and a huge section in the center of the grandstand has been reserved for them. In competition with Haugdahl and his Flat will be three great drivers, Horey, Lecklider and Duray. Horey at the wheel of Louis Cheirolet's speedway Frontenac, Lecklider with a Duesenberg eight and Duray in a Miller pitted against Haugdahl in his super-car, with gold aplenty for the man crossing the tape first after 20 laps, makes the greatest speed ever staged at Ascot in the opinion of the railbirds who suggested the match.

18,000 MEMBERS
Showing an increase of 18,092 members for 1923, the Automobile Club of Southern California's annual meeting brought many felicitations from all parts of the country. The total membership passed the 98,000 mark, the majority of whom live outside of Los Angeles.
All of the officers were honored with re-election and are as follows: President, W. L. Valentine; vice-president, H. W. Keller; second vice-president, Horace G. Miller; secretary, Standish L. Mitchell; assistant secretary, Ralph Reynolds; assistant secretary, Sidney H. Ellis, Jr.
Thomas Babington Macaulay, English author and statesman, could read well at the age of three years.
The quadrangular event is scheduled as the feature of the nine event card arranged for Ascot entertainment Sunday. The motorbike clashes, intermingled with the varied program of motor car events, combined with the specialties postponed by Jupe Pluvius last Sunday and added to the next card, makes up Ascot's biggest program since the revival of dirt bowl racing in Los Angeles.

LOS ANGELES, Marry Southern California motor dealers in motor cars in thought that automobile were just wheels—till Ed Budd visited this section.
Ladies and Gentlemen:
Before you buy any automobile go to the agency or the Headquarters from which the cars are sold in this community.
Make sure there is something behind the salesman to back up his sales talk.
Make sure there is a salesroom, a book-keeping system, a service or repair department, a good representative stock of parts and accessories, and I would want to know that the dealer had a long lease on his building, because those are the items which concern you. Those departments insure permanent representation and responsibleness, and that the dealer will be there when you need him. Dealers handling popular, best valued automobiles have those departments. That is one reason why the motor cars they sell are popular.
Our lease does not expire until 1929.
One quarter of a million dollars is required to finance our business.

BUT INCOME TAX IF CAR FOR BUSINESS
Although Uncle Sam continues tax motor vehicles at war rates, does make some allowances in paying income taxes that may be taken advantage of by motorists, according to the legal department of the Automobile Club of Southern California.
Where the motor vehicle is used exclusively for business purposes, depreciation, gas, oil, and repairs may be deducted from income tax returns. Depreciation, however, is limited to from 20 to 25 per cent, the maximum being allowed only for the first year of the life of the car.
In the event an automobile is used both for pleasure and business, the taxpayer may figure the rata and take advantage of it. For instance, if a motor vehicle used half the time for business and half the time for pleasure, reductions from the income tax may be claimed for 50 per cent of the depreciation, gas, oil and repairs. Where there is a division in the use of the car between business and pleasure, the government, of course, reserves the right checking up the claims for deductions.
This announcement made by the automobile club is in response to many inquiries received, and in view of the fact that many motors are not aware that such deductions may be made on their income tax returns.

15,763,000 Passenger Cars On Earth, Says Government
On January 1 there were in round numbers 18,000,000 cars and trucks in the world and five-sixths of them were owned in the United States.
The actual figures according to statistics compiled by the department of commerce show that at the opening of this year the entire world contained approximately 16,763,281 passenger cars, 2,345,850 trucks and 1,075,000 motorcycles, bringing the grand total of motor vehicles up to 19,-184,131. Of these 13,484,939 passenger care, 1,796,356 trucks and 171,568 motorcycles were owned in the United States thereby not only placing America in the lead but giving it a majority representation of about four to one against the remainder of the globe.
The total increase in registration of passenger cars, trucks and motorcycles for the world during the past year was 3,681,278 and of this number 2,854,487 found their way into the hands of residents of America. At first glance these figures do not appear to be adequate since it is known that America alone built 4,005,230 tor cars and trucks during the year just completed.
The apparent discrepancy is,

GUEST IN L. A.
LOS ANGELES, March 8. Southern California motorists and dealers in motor cars in generalought that automobile wheels were just wheels—till Edward G. Budd visited this section during the last fortnight. But they learned from him that wheels are more than that; for Bud painted them as a whole engineering problem.
The famous wheel and body maker has just left Los Angeles after his first visit to Southern California.
That disc wheels required innuity to give them the utmost strength when manufactured economically, was the statement made by the steel man in a talk before executives, dealers and salesmen of the Troy Motor Sales, Nash and LaFayette distributors.
It was Budd's only public appearance while in the South and his "chalk talk" was the most interesting in that he discussed technically all the problems which have been met with wheels and tires.
As to "fat", tires, he predicted that they would be used almost exclusively within a short time, but pointed out that tire makers daily finding new perfections and improvements for the balloons.
While here, Budd was the guest Robert S. Breyer, vice-president and general manager of the troy organization, and was taken by LaFayette motor car for an extended tour of Southern California.
"From production, engineering and merchandising standpoints," Mr. Budd asserted, in paying a tribute to Charles W. Nash, "theash factories stand fourth in class A."
7 MILES PER CALLON IN OAKLAND
Philip M. Sparks of Rose drive, Orba Linda, averaged nearly 28 miles per gallon of gas in a trip to his new Oakland touring to northern California and return.
Sparks was so delighted that he came into the office of Harry L. Burton, Northern Orange-co., distributor, and told him about it of his own accord. The trip amounted to 1060 miles.

SACRAMENTO, March 8.—Eroneous information that owners of Ford cars with boxes built on the rear would be exempt from payment of weight fees was contained in a circular issued by a San Francisco dealer. Will H. Marsh, chief of the Division of Motor Vehicles, announced today. While a weight certificate is not required in registering such cars, he stated, the cars take the lowest classification of pnpumatic-timed commercial vehicles, under the law, and a fee of $5, plus the regular $3 registration fee, is required.
NEW AUSTRALIAN RECORD HUNG UP
Speeding across desert wastes, mountainous roads and rugged mainland, a Studebaker special six touring car has just established a new record in a thrilling race against time from Freemantle to Sydney, Australia.
The car was driven by John Burton, a veteran Australian motorist.
It went through the gruelling grind of 2889 miles in five days, 21 hours and 45 minutes. This is 16 hours and 12 minutes faster than the previous record of six days, 13 hours and 57 minutes.
In addition, Burton drove the Studebaker through to a new record in his race, by clipping off considerable time between Freemantle, Adelaide and Melbourne. The special six negotiated the entire 2889 miles under extremely severe conditions and came through in perfect running order.
This new Australian record of Studebaker's comes on the heels of new marks recently established by stock model Studebaker cars in the Syrian desert and in the Union of South Africa.
ARE YOU GOING TO EUROPE?
We made a canvass of many who bought rivals of Studebakers. We said, "Tell us why you liked your car the better."
The majority said, "We did not even look at the Studebaker." Most of them bought new models of the car they owned before.
Yet Studebaker is a leader in the fine-car field today. Studebaker builds more quality cars than any other plant in the world.
Studebaker is the sensation of modern Motordom. Its amazing growth signifies a new situation in this field.
Last year, 145,167 fine-car buyers paid $201,000,-000 for Studebaker cars. Nearly three times as many as in 1920.
Is it fair to yourself—or fair to us—not to learn the reasons for this trend?

FAMOUS ROAMER CAR ON EXHIBITION
The famous Roamer with Rochester-Dusenberg engine which broke all records for from one to five miles at Tampa, Fla., in 1921, defeating all stock cars entered, is on exhibition at the showrooms of the Anaheim Roamer Barley Co. on East Center-st. The car was a stock machine in every respect except that it had an aluminum body instead of the ordinary one.
Its marks still stand, including that of over 105 miles per hour.
Dr. J. O. Schwentker, head of the local distributing concern, invites Anaheimers to inspect this wonderful car, which is in Anaheim for a short time only.
The new Barley car, with eight or ten sales in the first two or three weeks here, is making a sensational hit with motor fans.
The distinction of being the only woman to receive an LL.D. from the University of California belongs to Dr. Aurelia Reinhardt, president of Milla College. Dr. Reinhardt also holds a Ph.D. from Yale.
DODGE BROTHERS TYPE-B SEDAN
A woman will usually admire one thing about a car and a man another, but there is one feature of the new Type-B Sedan which both admire equally and emphatically—its exceptional driving ease.
This is due to a combination of several important improvements—a roomier front compartment; a readier clutch response; a new steering wheel that offers a trim, firm grip; and control levers that are ideally accessible, yet conveniently out of the way of robes and luggage.
