TRANSPOSE NORRIS NOVEL TO SCREEN
A photoplay which the California theatre management announces is out of the beaten track, dealing as it does with youthful faith and fancles diverted by the grim fate, is offered motion-fans in "Flaming Passions," the screen adaptation of Kathleen Norris' "best seller," "Lucretia Lombard," which captivated millions of readers by its unique treatment of the triangle.
The cast is headed by Irene Rich and Monte Blue, who are co-starred in this production. Both are remembered for their brilliant performances, intelligent understanding and team work in "Brass." Each is gifted with sympathetic insight into the roles they are cast for, and their work in this picture is said to be no exception to their previous achievements.
It is the story of a woman who married a man older than herself to gratify her mother's vanity and ambitions for a titled daughter. After seven years of loveless and forlorn marriage, catering to the whims of a crochety invalid, death comes and frees Lucretia Lombard. She meets a family group composed of Judge Winship, his wife, his pretty ward, Mimi; his two sons, Fred and Stephen, the latter a district attorney. Mimi loves Stephen, but he merely harbors a fond affection for her. Stephen is irresistibly drawn to Lucretia, and she to him. But he marries Mimi suddenly, when his jealousy feeds on a chance conversation between Lucretia and Fred.
The scenes showing how fate takes the matter into her own hands, arranging, disarranging and finally rearranging matters, are said to be extremely dramatic and strong.
Monte Blue and Irene Rich are supported by the following cast: Mare McDermott, Alec B. Francis, John Roche, Lucy Beaumont, Otto Hoffman and Norma Shearer.
MAN OF LETTERS IN PAUPER'S GRAVE
DUBLIN, March 7—The late Edward Martyn, who died in Dublin recently, though possessed of LA HABRA, March 7.(Spl.) Members of the Two U's club were entertained at the home of Mrs. Sarah Elder on W. Center avenue, Tuesday afternoon. Short business session was held, when the ladies contributed money to buy a suit of coveralls for a small child. Mrs. Clark and Mrs. Elders were appointed to do the buying. They also donated enough material to make a bed spread for a widow lady. It is the habit of the club to present each member with a gift. One gift is presented each month. Mrs. Pearl Beer was presented with a lovely lemonade set at the meeting Tuesday. The afternoon was spent in sewing and music, which was furnished by Miss Tissue Robeson. A dalty table luncheon was served at four o'clock by the hostess. Honor guests for the afternoon were Mrs. Manyae of Long Beach and Mrs. J. W. Elders of Whittier. Members present were Mimes, George Beer, Ida Clark, W. W. Crawford, L. Swingle, L. Robertson, Edith Robinson, Walter Pierce, Dorothy Morrison, Belle Lowen, Nancy Kerr, D. C. Fletcher, C. C. Chapman of Maywood and the hostess Mrs. Elders.
Mrs. C. C. Hamilton entertained the new five hundred club at her home on North Cypress-st. Tuesday afternoon. High honors for the afternoon went to Mrs. Dan Hungerford and Mrs. D. Vandenburg. After the playing a social hour was enjoyed when the hostess served those present with a dainty plate luncheon. Members present were Mrs. L. Vandenburg Mrs. Dan Hungerford, Mrs. Frank Reinolds, Mrs. Fred Cline, Mrs. Clarence Froome, Mrs. C. Tucker, Mrs. Peet, Mrs. D. Vandenburge and the hostess Mrs. Hamilton.
The regular monthly meeting and banquet of the Brotherhood was held at the Social hall Tuesday evening. About seventy-five members and guests were present to enjoy the banquet served by the Ladies Aid society of the Methodist church. A short business session was held after the dinner, with M. J. Pickering presiding. The brotherhood went on record as endorsing and passing a resolution condemning the local dance hall. This was followed by a road show, put on by the Editorial people demonstrating im-
MAN OF LETTERS IN PAUPER'S GRAVE
DUBLIN, March 7.—The late Edward Martyn, who died in Dublin recently, though possessed of many thousand sterling and well known in the world of letters, being a bunder of the Abbey theatre, with Senator Yeats and Lady Gregory, directed that he should be buried in a pauper's grave, with a pauper's coffin. He ordered that, before his body was consigned to the clay, it should be sent to the Dublin university to be used for research work.

DENY MEASURE TO RAISE GAS TAX
SACRAMENTO, March 7.—Advocacy of a legislative measure providing for the increase of the present 2-cent gasoline tax to 3 cents, in order to provide more road funds, was denied today by members of the state highway commission and State Engineer R. H. Morton.
It was stated, however, that road funds are rapidly nearing exhaustion and that a new system of raising highway moneys must be advanced. The commissioners further state that "we are not proposing any plan and have no plan to propose."
The commission outlines the problem to be met as follows: "Completion of the state highway system, and the necessity for financing a future outlay of at least $200,000,000. We have mentioned various ways in which this sum might be raised and have suggested the possibility of bond issues or increases in motor vehicle fees and the gasoline tax."
