Miscellaneous Absent Voting Law (Geo. Varnum) Frequently voters when asked to register say that it is "no use" because they will be out of the state or country. Since there are many good reasons why the county should be fully represented on the official registration no one should decline to register when given an opportunity. It is a sort of "voters census" of Anaheim or the county and is a measure of population and civic interest that should make every one take the trouble to find some registrar and claim the privilege of being on the roll. Our absent voter law (Political Code Secs. 1357 to 1364) enables a REGISTERED voter to procure between 5 and 10 days before an election, from County Clerk J. M. Backs, in person or by mail, a ballot to be voted by mail when the voter will be absent from his home on election day. He must make an affidavit reciting that he is a resident of his county, is registered, and that his occupation requires him to travel about the state, or is in the army or navy, and will be absent from home on the day of election and asking for an officail ballot. He will receive one and by following directions can vote as tho he were at home. If he asks for a primary ballot he must of course ask for the ballot of the party he affiliates with. No one should lose his vote because he fears he may be absent on election day if he can qualify under the above law and therefore he should register. Since the law provides for changes due to moving everyone should register now and if one moves to another place in the city or county or to another county of the state it is an easy matter to have the necessary corrections.
