GIRL BANDIT 'COMES THROUGH' CLEVELAND, Feb. 18.—Although Mrs. Anna Strawn, 20, pretty girl bandit, who confessed in court that she robbed a drug store clerk at the point of a gun, when her boy "sheik" told her she was yellow if she didn't do it, will have to face a grand jury investigation and police prison term, the presiding judge told her "was a plucky girl, and he admired her," because her conscience impelled her to make a clean breast of the whole affair. Anna last December met and married a man after a brief courtship. Within a week she became suspicious, because her husband, although always supplied with money, never seemed to have a regular job. She left him. A few days ago, out of work and despondent, with but 25 cents in her pocket, she visited a picture show. Sitting next to her was a youth of 17, who learned her story when she went. "Come and live with me," he pleaded. "I'll cure your troubles." Worn out with the struggle, the girl assented. Her happiness lasted four days. Then, pressing a shiny new revolver in her hand, the "sandk" told her to go out and rob a store. "You're yellow if you don't!" he told her. Smarting under his taunts, she started out. She passed a dozen stores before she "screwed her courage to the sticking point" and staged the holdup. A lone clerk in a drug store was the victim. The lot was $50. Escaping safely, the girl's conscience troubled her. Two days later she went to a telephone and called her victim. When she identified herself, the clerk said: "Tum busy. Call me a little dater." When the girl called again police had been tipped off, and she was arrested as she left a telephone booth a few blocks away from the scene of her crime. LEARNED TO READ AT FIFTY, NOW ENTERS COLLEGE MANY STARVED TO DEATH IN GERMANY BERLIN, Feb. 18.—One hundred and five Berliners died of starvation in the first ten months of last year. More than 300 persons living in Berlin or Berlin suburbs committed suicide to avoid starvation. Police statistics show a 20 percent increase in suicides against last year's total. While deaths in consequence of starvation chiefly occurred to elderly people of the poor classes the suicide wave sought its victims especially among middle-class people. The death roll of suicides from fear of starvation contains the names of one university professor, one Ph.D., one ex-lieutenant-colonel, several painters and a considerable number of formerly well-to-do widows who have been deprived of their fortunes by the collapse of the mark. In numerous cases elderly couples sought death together by opening the gas pipes. It has been ascertained that starved people lived on nothing but potato peels for months prior to their self-chosen death. NEW FORAGE FOR P. I. ARMY HORSES SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 14.—A new forage ration, which is composed of native grain products of the Philippine Islands, has been developed by a board of officers, of which Col. Wm. G. Turer, new veterinary officer of the ninth corps area, was president after a long series of experiments and is now being used by some of the organizations in the Philippines, partly solving the difficulty of obtaining an adequate supply of forage there. These experiments have shown that the new forage ration is practical for the army animals, and it is probable that it will be permanently adopted. Trade Unions Rout Irish Industries DUBLIN, Feb. 18.—Industries are being driven out of Dublin daily by the attitude of the Irish trade unions in demanding wages that are impossible to pay, an official of the Dublin Port of Docks B-ard declared in a recent interview. The latest example, he said, was in the ship building industry. INDIANS FAVOR BRITISH LABOR RULE A lone clerk in a drug store was the victim. The lot was $50. When the girl called again police had been tipped off, and she was arrested as she left a telephone booth a few blocks away from the scene of her crime. In custody she made a clean breast of the whole affair. THINK KING BORIS IS SEEKING BRIDE SOFIA, Feb. 18. King Boris has announced he is going traveling, and there are two explanations for the trip. The semi-official report is that the king needs a rest after four years constantly on the throne. The unofficial and more general impression, however, is a queen. Rumor has had King Boris, who is 29 years old, afflianced to Romanian, English, Italian and Serbian princesses; but the various alliances have failed to materialize. The Bulgarians are anxious for a queen—hence the romantic version of the purpose of King Boris' trip through Europe. Try a Plain Dealer Want Ad. Trade Unions Rout Irish Industries DUBLIN, Feb. 18. Industries are being driven out of Dublin daily by the attitude of the Irish trade unions in demanding wages that are impossible to pay, an official of the Dublin Port of Docks Board declared in a recent interview. The latest example, he said, was in the ship building industry. During the war a thriving ship building yard was erected in the port but had to close down owing to the high scale of wages demanded by the men. Some months ago Messrs. Viekers, the English ship builders and armament makers, took over the site with the intention of beginning work afresh. No work has been in the yard so far, however, though it was the intention to restart in a comparatively short time. The Dublin workers demand wages 26 shillings in excess of the wage paid on the Clyde and refuse to compromise. An official of the company says it is cheaper for his firm to keep the yard closed. Meantime unemployment is broadcast in Dublin and, though most of the men are ready to accept the Clyde scale, the officials of the unions won't allow them to work upon these terms. INDIANS FAVOR BRITISH LABOR RULE LONDON, Feb. 18. India looks with favor on the new labor government, according to Sir Nial Singh, foremost Indian politician. The laborites, he said have decried the folly of embittering India and advocated the right of self-determination, he declared, and India looks to them to "help her realize her ambition of being mistress in her own home." JAIL TOTAL LOSS CONYNHAMTOWN, Pa., Feb. 18. Inasmuch as there hasn't been an arrest since Conynham town was made a borough, 22 years ago, the town "jail" has been junked. At the time the borough was established a large steel cage was purchased for $25 to be used as a "lockup." No single prisoner has graced the interior of the cage since. The relics are of a hand and a jaw and are enshrined in the Shrine of Saint Patrick's Hand and the Shrine of Saint Patrick's Jaw. The jaw is large, and only one double tooth remains. It appears that many years ago there were five teeth in the jaw, which then belonged to the Cullen family, living at Dernaghy, near Belfast. Three members of the family, it is said, each took a tooth when emigrating to the United States, while the fourth was deposited under the altar of the chapel at Dernaghy in 1797. The jaw was in the custody of the Cullen family for many generations, and it appears that many years ago the water in which the bone was immersed was given to persons afflicted with epilopay and was also used as an antidote for cattle diseases. SUCCESSFUL WAR ON MONTANA PEST HELENA, Mont., Feb. 18.—Although the cost of Montana's campaign during 1922 to combat the grasshopper menace was $125,000, the saving of grain crops within the state due to this campaign was about $15,000,000. The campaign was waged by the United States Bureau of Entomology, and the results were gleaned from a report prepared by Stewart Lockwood, the entomologist who directed the war on the pests. The peak of the menace in Montana is past, it is believe; but it is recommended that a similar campaign must be carried on in 1924 in that part of the state west of the Rocky Mountains. QUALITIES GOOD HUBBY MUST HAVE PHILADELPHIA, Feb. 18. The man who qualifies as a good husband is one with a good memory, and one who is appreciative, honorable, generous and a good provider. This is the answer of the Rev. Christian K. Koppel, noted local pastor, to the question "What Sort of Man Makes a Good Husband?" Recently he answered the question, "What Sort of a Woman Makes the Best Wife?" Dr. Koppel condoned flattery in the make-up of a husband. "Tell your wife how beautiful she is," was his advice to beneficiaries. "It may be stretching the truth, but God will not hold it against you." "It is a poor sort of husband," he continued, "who invariably notices the fetching gown of an other woman, but is blind to his own wife's efforts to make herself attractive. Appreciation makes a man a good husband. The life of the average woman is a life sentence at hard work. It means endless sacrifice and one never-ending round of cooking, washing, cleaning, sewing, sick nursing and baby tending, and the only thing that makes it worth while is for the husband to show he appreciates her." The other dates when will take returns are March and 4. Taxes are coming in very slowly due, according to a Los Angeles judge, whose view Hauser quoted today, to the fact that people are waiting to see if new federal tax law is going make any difference.
