DAILY GREETING TO OUR READERS:
There is a twofold peace. The first is negative.
It is relief from disquiet and a corroding care. It is repose after conflict and storms. But there is another and a higher peace to which this is but the prelude—a peace of God which passeth all understanding, and properly called the kingdom of heaven within us.
This state is anything but negative. It is the highest and most strenuous action of the soul.
—William E. Channing
FLEEING SPEEDERS ARE PUT UNDER BAN
There are few things more cowardly than the course of autoists who run down persons, kill them or main them, and then speed away. The Automobile Club of Southern California, which has done and is doing much to improve the status of automotive traffic and to promote its safety, is offering to pay rewards to those who furnish information leading to the arrest and conviction of motorists who strike down pedestrians or others and then speed away without offering assistance, as the law requires.
The number of instances of this form of brutality is increasing. During the year 1923 there were 65 cases in Los Angeles county wherein reckless drivers fled after serious accidents, without offering aid.
This type of driver should be arrested and prosecuted criminally. And the first offense of the kind should be followed by revoking of the license of the negligent driver. No person who would do such a brutal thing should be permitted to drive a car in this state.
Bread is one of the staples of life, consumed in vast quantities. It is well to give special study to it, as well as to other standard articles of diet.

CANAL IS VULNERABLE, EXPERTS SAY
The Panama canal is insufficiently defended. This is the victim of the chief umpires who passed upon the recent joint maneuvers of the two fleets of the United States navy. The canal, as at present defended, is open to attack by aircraft bombardment and also is open to raids from enemy naval forces.
This authoritative report is disquieting. It should impel Congress to act quickly and constructively, to make canal defenses less vulnerable. The vital waterway between the oceans should be defended amply against any attack that might be launched against it by air, by water, or by land. The time to strengthen its defenses is while peace reigns and when there are no war clouds in the sky. It might be too late to avoid disaster, if fortifying were delayed too long. There is no excuse or warrant for procrastination.
Horrible disasters occur frequently in eastern coal mines. Despite all that science and inventive ingenuity have done to lessen the hazards of mining, it is a perilous occupation.

A man who was interested in social work went into a tenement district and, wishing to see a certain man, but having only a general idea as to where he lived approached a small boy for information.
"My boy," he said, "can you show me where Mr. Linkovitch lives?"
"Yes, sir," was the quick reply of the boy, seething a tip. "Concern right with me, sir."
With this the boy entered the adjacent doorway and started climbing the difficult stairs. Up for flights he went, the visitor breathed lessly following, and finally paused at an open door.
"This is the floor," said the boy, wistfully looking for the coin. "Mr. Linkovitch lives there."
"Looks as if we had had luck," remarked the visitor, peering into the room. "Mr. Linkovitch doesn't appear to be here."
No, sir," was the rejoinder to the boy. "That was him settling down on the front doorstep when we came in."
A negro order in Georgia bowed the name and insignia of a popular white lodge without asking permission. The white fraternity promptly went into court with a restraining order. The sue was carried on appeal to the highest court of the state, where the attorney for the plaintiffs appealed to ask that the injunction be made permanent. He was adressing the full bench.

Little Talk On Thrift
By S. W. STRAUS, President
American Society for Thrift.
Few people in this country realize perhaps that we destroy by
fire one out of every eight new
buildings we erect, and that the
same destructive element causes a
loss of forty lives a day.
These statements, startling in
the extreme, are based on the most
recent estimates of fire losses compiled by the National Board of Fire Underwriters and authentic building statistics. The report for 1922 now being compiled and to be completed within a few weeks thus far reveal total fire losses for that year of more than $521,000,
000. When completed they will show an event larger total. The estimates do not include fires on all farms. In many rural districts Secretary of Agriculture Wallace recently estimated losses run to at least $50,000,000 annually.
Inasmuch as new building operations in this country in 1922 were $4,000,000,000, it will be seen that on a conservative basis, our fire losses amount to not less than 12½ per cent of our new building construction.
Our per capita losses in 1918 were $3.36. In 1912 they had increased to $4.75. During the decade, 1912-1922, our total losses by fire increased approximately 100 per cent, and during the previous decade, 1902-1912, the total increase in fire losses was a little less than 30 per cent.
Our annual loss of life from fires is in excess of 15,000 and is continually growing.
Students of fire conditions are united in saying that most fires are the result of sheer carelessness. The preventive of fire is an important phase of thrift, and all banks, schools and other agencies which are endeavoring to promote thrift in this country should give attention to education in fire prevention.
So great are our fire losses and so rapidly are they increasing that they are becoming an outstanding

A stranger visiting a little Scotch community for the first time, was surprised to find two large Presbyterian churches facing each other on the main street. He sought enlightenment of passing native.
"What was the reason for building two big churches of the same religion in a place this size?" he asked. "Surely, one would accommodate the entire village."
"Yes, you're right," admitted the native. "One would be plenty big enough, but there's two different classes of Presbyterians in this place and so they had to have two churches."
"What's the difference in their religious views?"
"Well, so far as I can find out," drawled the native, "one bunch believes that Adam got bad after he ate that there apple while the other bunch is convinced that he was a durned rascal from the start."

On thee I rest my only hope at last,
And think, when thou hast dried the bitter tear

COMMENTS OF THE PRESS
What Editors Are Saying
REFORESTING THIS SOUTHLAND—Riverside (Cal.) Press
It is encouraging to know that work of reforestation is to be undertaken in Southern California, where so many forest fires have denuded mountain sides and imperilled our water supply sources.
At the meeting of the Tri-Counties Reforestation committee in Riverside a few days ago State Forester Pratt told members of the committee that the State Board of Forestry has a program of forest replacement now under way, and that this program is receiving the aid of the federal foresters to the extent of their ability. In furtherance of these plans a move is on foot to locate a reforestation office and district in Southern California. This state has no district of this sort, though they were established some years ago in Oregon and Idaho and are doing a constructive work in replanting the barren hills. It is announced that state senators and congressmen will be asked to help raise the deficiency in this state.
Preservation of forest areas is so closely linked up with water conservation that the two might well be considered as one great enterprise, and one which should receive the aid and encouragement of all good citizens.

Who takes the troubles
Of other people
In a very philosophical way.
He is very cheerful, indeed,
Over the woes of his friends.
The other day I met one of Those happy creatures.
I was telling him I was worried About high prices and One thing and another and That things were not breaking Just as they ought to break;
That there were strikes And a failing in money values And a presidential year
"You should never worry. Never worry about anything. What if coal is too high? What if all prices are too high? What if your taxes bother you? Worry makes things no better. Do as I do and smile all day What happens in this country During the next year or so Does not worry me a particle. Cheer up and sit tight And you will come out O. K." And then my friend took his grip And he bade me good-by and then He got aboard a steamship
