MARINE RIVAL OF SHELL CO.
The Marine Oil Corp. is a close rival of the Shell in the development of deep sand production at Long Beach, and in addition to a trio of big wells recently completed, the Marine adds No. 18, a 2500-barrel well completed at 5245 feet. This close to a mile deep well required more than 1,500 feet of screen pipe to take care of the oil sand zone and is producing 30 gravity oil, a grade that is rare on the hill.
New interest has been added to the outlook for deep sand production in the extreme northwest section of the Long Beach field now that the United Oil Co. is getting some nice oil and gas showings below the 4900 mark. The showings are the best that the Bixby well has ever exhibited, and the outlook is exceptionally good at the present time.
Santa Fe Springs took another big production slump this past week, the output of the field dropping below the 124,000 a day mark. The great high gravity oil field that was the pride of California a year ago with its spectacular big wells, is going out in about the same spectacular manners.
The Standard Oil Co. contributed the only excitement the Springs field had this past week, with a 1000-barrel well on the O. A. Houghton lease. The Houghton well was drilled to 4660 and is making 55 gravity oil. The Standard west extension well, W. L. Houghton No. 1, is 5460 feet deep and has not found anything that looks like oil.
The Union Oil Co.'s Parwell No. 9 at 4775 feet, drilled 475 feet into the Meyer zone and got a 1000-barrel well. Bell No. 1, the discovery well of big production at Santa Fe in the Bell sand proved a wonderful well, producing more than a million barrels of oil. Drilled later into the Meyer sand, the well has failed to make
BUENA PARK
BUENA PARK, Feb. 8. (Spl.)
The following people are at the Buena Park Sanitarium where they were taken for treatment for injuries received when the pickwick stage overturned on Grand-ave about one fourth in north of Jack Golden's store. Alfred Plough of Los Angeles is suiting from a badly cut leg and bruises all over the Body. Hubert Jordan also of Los Angeles has a badly sprained back. Mrs. Michael Eiffel of San Diego is badly cut about the face and has a broken collar bone. All were resting easy Thursday morning, but lanye need to stay at the sanitarium for some time. The Pickwick stage was going toward Los Angeles. There was a team and wagon on the road in front of stage. A Cadillac coming toward the stage in going around the wagon did not see the stage. The driver of the stage in attempting to avoid a collision pulled to side and off of pavement but the two machines collided and the stage turned over twice with the result that three passengers were injured. It is said that the stage driver also had either a sprained or broken arm. The driver of the Cadillac was not hurt.
Mr. Garrison Coster, engineer at the pump station strained his arm quite badly, Wednesday.
Mrs. E. E. Thurman entertained a number of young matrons in honor of her daughter-in-law, Mrs. E. W. Thurman, at her home en Grand-ave, Wednesday afternoon. The afternoon was pleasantly spent with fancy work and friendly chats and the hostess served daity refreshments to the following guests: Mrs. G. S. Davis, Mrs John Robertson, Mrs. L. T. Wilsey, Mrs. C. H. Owens, Mrs Garrison Coster, Mrs Richard Nelson, Mrs Carl Snyder, Mrs Frank Jones and the honoree, Mrs E. W. Thurman.
L. J. Robeson returned Thursday from a stay of several days in Los Angeles.
A. Houghton lease. The Houghton well was drilled to 4660 and is making 35 gravity oil. The Standard west extension well, W. L. Houghton No. 1, is 5460 feet deep and has not found anything that looks like oil.
The Union Oil Co.'s Farwell No. 9 at 4775 feet, drilled 475 feet into the Meyer zone and got a 1000-barrel well. Bell No. 1, the discovery well of big production at Santa Fe in the Bell sand proved a wonderful well, producing more than a million barrels of oil. Drilled later into the Meyer sand, the well has failed to make anything like a good showing, and may have to be put on the pump.
Huntington Beach's daily output continues to hold steadily at 64,000 barrels, and with the starting of new development, the production of the field is expected to hold its own. New development scheduled for Huntington Beach is three new wells on the Miley-Keck property by the Amalgamated, and new wells on the Surf and Thompson Jenses by the Standard Oil. Late additions to Huntington Beach production include the 225-barrel well of the Getty Oil Co., and the 75-barrel pumper put on by the Sequoia Oil Co. The Globe Petroleum Co. deepened its La Bolsa No. 1 to 4595, and expects a substantial production increase from the deep sand.
Montebello's west extension well, Bicknell No. 1, at 4305, failed to make much of a showing on production, and will be drilled deeper and given another chance. It is the intention to give the well a second tryout at 4320, and if it fails to make good, the drilling will be carried to 5800 feet and a third production test made.
POKER IN CHINA; MAH JONG IN U.S.
PHILADELPHIA, Feb. 8.—Poker is a more common game in China than the well-known Mah Jong, according to a Chinese student at the University of Pennsylvania, who spoke with the feeling that "it is high time for some Chinese to point out a few of the extravagance that marvelous press agents have indulged in while popularizing Mah Jong.
"First, it is not a sacred and ancient game," he said. "They say it originated with Confucius, but that sage would have frowned on such frivolity."
"It cannot be very ancient, as we Chinese consider things ancient. The game is not mentioned in literature earlier than 100 years ago."
"Then you should discount all statements that it is the most popular game played in China. I would say that your American poker is played more extensively in my country than Mah Jong."

VISIONS BRIGHT ALASKAN FUTURE
LOS ANGELES, Feb. 8.—Alaska is pictured as a vast agricultural empire of the future by Ray O. Larson, "sourdough" pioneer of the "Dawon Days," but now president of a lumbering concern doing business in the far north, who is now in Los Angeles.
Larsen went to the site that later became Dawson town, he was 17 years old. He traveled with Jack London over the Arctic trails and was the hero of many northland stories which were written about the early days of Alaska.

1924 IMPORTANT IN HISTORY OF SCIENCE
LONDON, Feb. 8.—The year 1924 may be the most important year in the history of science.
Scientific leaders declare that laboratories the world over are buzzing with activity, and 1924 may see many of nature's hidden secrets revealed.
"It is possible that the world is on the verge of far-reaching scientific discoveries," declared Sir William Bragg, Director of the Royal Institute Laboratories.
"It is of course, impossible to say what the nature of these discoveries may be. Research work is being pursued in laboratories all over the country, and the scientific mind hesitates to pretend a discovery until there is absolutely certainty."
There are the secrets of the atom still to be unveiled. Theoretically we know quite lot about the atom, but in reality we will do not know exactly what it is and the full nature of its powers. There is an immense field for investigation here, and each stop in the exploration is not only a triumph for science, but let us hope will mark a forward step in the happiness of humanity.
"It all depends upon the need to which mankind puts scientific discovery. A new element unknown may prove disastrous. There is the case of poison gas in warfare; but properly understood and harnessed to man's services, it may be of incalculable benefit. We cannot tell; our province as scientists is to discover the hidden thing in the first place."
