ORANGE OUTRUNS ALAMEDA COUNTY Orange-co took third rank in the state for marriage licenses issued during 1923, being surpassed by Los Angeles and San Francisco, according to figures issued today from Sacramento. Alameda-co, which includes the cities of Oakland, Berkeley and Alameda, dropped behind Orange-co for the first time. Alameda-co, held third place in 1922. Fresno, San Diego and other more populous counties were likewise outdistanced. Los Angeles with 16,897 was an outstanding first. The state reported a total of 55,190 marriage licenses, a gain of 16 per cent over 1922. San Francisco-co was a poor second with 7,097. Orange-co's total was 4,267 and Alameda-co. 4,040. Only one license was issued in Albane-co., while Mono-co. was bridleless. IDENTIFY BANDIT LOS ANGELES, Feb. 1.—J. H. Sipprell, manager of the West Adams and Halldale-sts, branch of The Security Trust and Savings Bank today positively identified William Anderson, a salesman, of Walnut Park, as the man who yesterday held up the banking institution and robbed it of approximately $2000. The bank manager identified Anderson among a group of more than a dozen prisoners. Detectives immediately began to quiz Anderson with hope of gaining a confession from him. LIQUOR SMUGGLING ON PACIFIC COAST WASHINGTON, Feb. 1.—Pacific coast states are facing the same liquor smuggling problem as confronts the eastern seaboard, altho to a lesser degree. Samuel Rutter, federal prohibition director of California, declared today. Rutter came to Washington to appeal for a material increase of the coast guard that rum running may be checked. He conferred with Prohibition Commissioner Haynes today, urging that the commissioner use his influence toward the adoption of the recommendations of Secretary of the Treasury Melton for construction of a fleet of fast "rum chasers." HE SHOULD WORRY ABOUT JAP LABOR LOS ANGELES, Feb. 1.—H. S. Threshener of Los Angeles is the first man to take advantage of the situation existing in the Secrement-San Joaquin delta, owing to the decision of the U.S. supreme court prohibiting further cropping contracts between land owners and Japanese. Threshener has purchased a 360-acre tract on Droxel Island at the confluence of the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers, and will locate on it and depend on white labor. The Los Angeles man does not believe that only Orientals know the secret of successfully farming the rich peat lands. Admitting conditions are somewhat different, he believes modern methods adapted to conditions will produce splendid results. The Juliana Petroleum Corporation added 800 barrels of new production at Terrance with the completion of its No.2 on the Bell-Johnson property。它 was necessary to go 2800 feet to get this production. The Cook well a completion at 3810 failed to make a flowing producer and preparations are underway to put it on pamp. The Cook Drilling Co.is trying hard to get Juliam 6 on regular production,但 to date have been having a lot of trouble with sand. With the completion ofthe James F.Nugent Oil Company's No.I The Terrance field got a nice producer. The Nugent well at 5770 feet is doing between 800 and 1000 barrels. The Nugent Oil Company has made liberal allowances for its stockholders and ifthe production holds upthe backers of organization can expect substantial dividends. With the taking over ofthe properties and holdings ofthe MeDonald Corp.the Empire Drilling Co.as assumes both roleof contractor and producer. In addition to two McDonald wellsThe Empire has two on production and three drilling.Int interest in the north lineofthe field now centers onthe results ofthe Biltmore Oil Co.'s test. It's for stiff, swollen, or pain-tortured joints whether caused by rheumatism or not. A few seconds' rubbing and it soaks right in through skin and flesh right down to ligament and bone. It oils up and limbers up the joints, subludes the inflammation and reduces the swelling. Joint-Ease is the one great remedy for all joint troubles and Heying's Pharmacy and other five drug-gists are dispensing it daily—a tube for 69 cents. Interest in the north line of the field now centers on the results of the Biltmore Oil Co.'s test well. The Biltmore formerly called the Trembl-Rhea Syndicate completed the drilling of its well at 5643 and will try out at that point. Should commercial production not be obtained at this depth the well will be carried on in search of deep sand. That there is no deep sand or any other oil bearing sand in the southwest section of the Lemith field has been definitely established by the Union Oil Co. The Union's test well on the Weston property was drilled to 5730 feet and found nothing that looked like oil.
