MISCELLANEOUS MARY NOW REAL QUEEN OF FILMS That Mary Pickford is rapidly becoming the "world's sweet-heart" in fact as well as in name is indicated in the results of popularity contests staged in various countries during the past few months. A questionnaire filled out by 27,000 high school pupils in 76 cities in all parts of the United States showed that Miss Pickford is the favorite actress of both high school boys and girls. This circular was issued by the Russell Sage foundation in co-operation with the National Committee for Better Films, of New York city, and is said to be the most accurate check on the popularity of picture players that has ever been tabulated. The Talmadge sisters also stood high in the contest. Douglas Fairbanks won the boy's vote, while the girls selected Rudolph Valentine. In addition to being the most popular feminine photoplay star, Miss Pickford has also been chosen as the most beautiful. This selection was made by Neysa McMein, America's foremost woman illustrator. But this artist's popularity is not confined to the United States alone. This is indicated by the result of a contest staged through Cuny by the leading newspaper of Havana, Miss Pickford won by an overwhelming majority. In several European countries the same performance was repeated. "Eve," a weekly Paris publication, on the order of "The Ladies' Home Journal," and "The Journal," a daily published at Liege, Belgium, have recently independent of each other, had voting contests to decide the most popular screen stars. In the Liege Journal" competition Miss Pickford down will buy 5-room new modern house; price $5200. This house has hardwood floors, built-in features, tile sink, and well-arranged throughout, with large kitchen, breakfast room and stationary tub. Large garage, cement floor, driveway; located close in and good neighborhood. G. H. GREFE CO. 226 E. Center St. BUENA PARK BUENA PARK, Jan. 22. (Spl.) I.S.Berham who has been sick for a couple of weeks is able to go to work again. Miss Irma Robison was the week-end guest of friends at Eagle Rock. NEW TODAY $250 down will buy 5-room new modern house; price $5200. W.I.TROUTMAN This is indicated by the result of a contest staged out Cusat by the leading newspaper of Havana, Miss Pickford won by an overwhelming majority. In several European countries the same performance was repeated. "Eve," a weekly Paris publication, on the order of The Ladies' Home Journal," and "The Journal," a daily published at Liege, Belgium, have recently, independent of each other, had voting contests to decide the most popular screen stars. In the Lieve Journal" competition Miss Pickford and Mr. Fairbanks received the most votes, and with "Eve," Miss Pickford was elected as the most popular feminine star, and Leon Mathot, a popular French artist, led the men with Doug a close second. A popularity contest in Japan was won by Miss Pickford, and also one in Brazil. This all seems to indicate that without question Miss Pickford is the "queen of the screen" throughout the entire world. Her latest feature photoplay, "Rosta," in which she plays the role of a grownup young woman, is now showing at the California theater. BELIEVES WIFE CAN OPEN HUBBY'S MAIL LIMA, O., Jan. 22 — A long time ago, before the days of woman suffrage and feminine supreme court judges, a mere husband managed to put one over on his wife by telling her that it was "against the law" for a wife to open mail addressed to her husband. In many instances the husband scared out friend wife. The fallacy has had widespread circulation for years. A lot of wives still believe it. But Albert E. Gale, Lima's postmaster, a firm believer in woman's rights and privileges, has gone to the aid of the wives. "Can a woman open her husband's mail?" he was asked. "Sure, she can; if she isn't paralyzed and doesn't fear to start a row." responded Postmaster Gale. "There isn't anything in the law against it. I can see, however, how many a nice little battle could be started around the home fireside by such a question." "The responsibility of the postoffice department ends when mail is delivered to the proper address," said Postmaster Gale. "After that it is out of our keeping. We don't care whether the husband, or his wife, or his private secretary opens his mail." Of course, if mail is stolen that is a matter to be reported to the postoffice department. But wives and mails! The postoffice department knows better than to monkey with that question. The individual wife and husband should be able to settle it for themselves."
