SON STRIVES FOR CITIZENSHIP
SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 22—California legionnaires are ready to launch the most extensive and complete campaign of co-education in citizenship ever attempted in the United States, State Commander James F. Collins of Long Beach announced yesterday.
"As we fought over there, we'll fight over here to arouse public consciousness in the duties of every American toward his nation, his state and his community," Commander Collins declares in his official orders to the ex-service men issued from state headquarters in this city.
Between 1500 and 2000 American Legion men and women have been enrolled by the state-wide speakers' bureau of the Legion to carry the message of the organization into every community, large and small, in California.
The state has been divided into 40 districts under Collins' plan and a district commander appointed by the state commander as his personal representative to supervise the work. These men have been selected from among the outstanding members of the ex-service men's organization.
At least once each month every American Legion post is to be visited by a legionnaire from another post, and in addition all civic clubs such as the Rotary, Kiwanis, women's clubs, churches and luncheon and fraternal clubs are to receive the message by which the Legion officials hope to arouse the public conscience to its obligation to the community, state and nation.
One of the prime objects of this ambitious educational campaign is to secure a larger registration among the eligible voters of California, and to impress upon the citizens the duty upon them to participate in their governmental affairs.
"The Legion is aroused by the danger which confronts this country because of the apathy of her citizens toward civic affairs, and the increasing neglect of the privilege of voting." Commander Collins points out.
As outlined by the American Chiropractors To Convene In L.A.
Plans have been completed for the largest gathering of chiropractors ever held in California, when the California State Chiropractic Society will hold its 11th annual convention in Los Angeles, Feb. 1, 2 and 3. Practically every city and town in the state will be represented at the convention.
Dr. B. J. Palmer, son of the founder of chiropractic, of Davenport, Iowa, will be the principal speaker at the sessions. Dr. Palmer is also scheduled for addresses before luncheon clubs and chambers of commerce in cities all the way from San Diego to San Francisco during his stay on the coast.
The sessions will be opened with a welcome by Mayor Cryer of Los Angeles. There will be clinks held, demonstrations, lectures and discussions of the legislative problems which confront the chiropractic profession.
More than 1000 delegates will be in attendance, according to Dr. Frank Pyott, secretary of the society.
OXY GOES EAST

As outlined by the American Legion heads, the educational campaign contemplates a sales letter talk being sent to each worker in the movement every two weeks from now until the Monterey convention next fall.
Patriotic legionnaires will work in conjunction with this program as laid down by Commander Collins to develop leadership in practically every community throughout California during the period of the campaign.
State Adjt. Morgan Keaton has prepared all the necessary literature and letters to launch the citizenship drive, which is intended for all members of the community rather than for the alien members, as has been the object of most of the previous endeavors.
"Tobacco Stomach"
The excessive use of tobacco is one of the most common causes of indigestion and stomach inflammation. Whether you smoke or chew makes little difference. The highly irritating juice of the weed is swallowed with the saliva, often setting up an acute inflammation of the stomach which may end in gastritis or chronic stomach inflammation.
"Tobacco stomach" produces a number of distressing symptoms — first a loss of appetite, then an occasional attack of indigestion. Perhaps your food sours at times and you notice a peculiar burning in the stomach. These attacks occur with greater frequency as time goes on. Finally, if neglected, the condition becomes chronic, resulting in loss of flesh and general poor health.
Smith Brox.' M. A. C. Stomach Tonic has proven wonderfully successful in all forms of digestive trouble. The very first dose should convince. Nothing on earth like it. You can get a large bottle for $1.25. Heying's Pharmacy will supply you.

What depreciation may the taxpayer claim for 1923? The probable life of this house being 20 years, he may claim 1-20th or 5 per cent of $15,000, or a deduction of $750 from his 1923 income. No, he may not claim depreciation on his residence, nor on his automobile, unless the latter is actually used in his business.
A few days ago, a taxpayer told me that she had purchased in 1914 a lot and frame house for $5000, which he has rented ever since. The value of the house when purchased was $2500. In 1922 he sold it for $9000. One of the hardest things I ever tried to do was to make that man see where he should return a profit of $4900 instead of $4000. Now you will all agree $5000 is his capital invested, or purchase price; but there is another fact to be given consideration. He had charged depreciation on that house at the rate of $100 a year for nine years—or $900. We assume then that he had received $900 in depreciation prior to time of the sale. I could not make him understand that this $900 returned to him in depreciation.
GIANT KGO RADIO HEARD FAR AWAY
From a place near where the Pony Express rider of half a century ago began his journey eastward, the giant KGO radio broadcasting station, located at Oakland, Calif., has spoken across the continent, as is shown today by the hundreds of telegrams and letters pouring into the station from every part of the United States and Canada; from Honolulu, and from vessels scattered over the Pacific ocean. It is significant that within a fractional part of the time required for the sound of the pony's hoof-beats to reach the rider's ears, the new KGO has delivered its message to the Atlantic seaboard and beyond.
Vessels off the Atlantic coast have communicated with this giant newcomer on the air, reporting reception of the initial program with remarkable clearness and strength. Metropolitan daily newspapers from all over the nation are telegraphing KGO for program schedules and details of the mechanical equipment, to tapeentries the acousticians so placed the absorbing material in the walls and ceilings that casual observer would know they were there. Even rugs on the floor, and the

IMPROVED IS LINER EQUIPMENT
LONDON, Jan. 22.—According to Z. W. Blocksidge, English mechanical engineering authority, presiding liners are no better equipped for the saving of lives than in the days of the Titanic.
Liners themselves, however, wereBlocksidge, in an address to Institute of Marine Engi-ers, are becoming more and more like lifeboats themselves, due to improved construction.
Blocksidge conceded that with tremendous advance in wire telegraphy and wireless telephony and its increased use in large ships, they were in a better position than at the time of the loss of the Titanic, and forecast that within a few yearswire would supersede even light-ships.
Recovers Speech
JACKSON, Jan. 22—Geraldine Davies, the 5-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs., A. L. Davies, after an illness of three months which caused her to lose her power of speech, is now able to talk. Geraldine was stricken with a malady which baffled physicians and specialists.
Tests were taken by different specialists for paralysis, but no indication of that disease was found. It was thought that she had eaten something poisonous that had affected the system so that she lost the use of her limbs and the power of speech.
She is now well on the road to recovery.
