Y., Jan. 18.—Faced by a dwindling parish and the knowledge that the district must be re-peopled if his church is to survive, the Rev. Richard O'Donnell, pastor of the Roman Catholic church of St. Rose of Lama, has made an offer that is unique in church animals—free land to those who will become homesteaders. More than 50 years ago the church occupied a commanding position in the section of the country of which it was the nucleus. When Saranac lake was in its infancy and most of the surrounding towns consisted of nothing but a collection of homesteads, it served as the center from which radiated organized religious endeavor. Now the situation is changed: Father O'Donnell admits frustration of his fondest plans without the slightest trace of bitterness. It is the divine decree, he avers. "I own 210 acres of land in this vicinity. I am willing to parcel it out free to persons agreeing to homestead on it. I am in earnest. If anyone desires to emancipate himself from the sorrowlessness of the city and is willing to give this place a trial, I will undertake to do the rest." Try a Plain Dealer Want Ad. FINDS BANKRUPT HAS MILLIONS LONDON, Jan. 18.—The meteorite rise and fall of a former clerk from a millionaire worth nearly $6,000,000 to the bankrupt court was unfolded at Cardiff, when Wm. J. Sutherland, coal exporter, underwent examination in bankruptcy. Sutherland, in his testimony, said that he began business as a coal exporter and that at the height of the Welsh coal export boom in 1919 he estimated that he was worth $5,745,000; but through losses on time charters and on the ordering of tankers, he had to go bankrupt in 1919. Since that time, he testified, over 20 petitions and 35 writs had been issued against him. His assets, he admitted, were $250, while his liabilities were more than $1,000,000. Won't Be Candidate CLEVELAND, Jan. 18.—"Nothing is further from my thots than being a candidate for president," Newton D. Baker, secretary of war in the cabinet of President Wilson, said today, commenting on a report that has gained circulation that he was contemplating becoming a candidate for the Democratic nomination for president. The report came as a surprise to friends of Mr. Baker here as the former war secretary had often expressed his desire to remain in private life. A little pig's affection for a will save him from the bush. Born in a slaughter house, little porter was presented to K. Reed, Nevada cattleman, took it to the Longstreet near here. At the ranch the 5-pound capped a cow nursing a calf took advantage of the cow's elining position and "nosed for dinner." As the calf was most weaned the pig retreated regularly at meal times. The foster mother accepted obligation, and whenever porter approached lay down provide nourishment. The pig now weighs 200 stricly milk-fed. Reed declares this pig will er go to market. This country will keep on veloping excellent twirlers so as there are small boys; balls and silk hats. If even the reading clerk dead, we'll know some congenial man has introduced a bill doesn't call for an appropriation. Ianeous Plain Dealer Class NEW TODAY PAPERHANGING, painting and printing.
