THURSDAY, January 17, 1924 RUBE MILLER AT UNITED THEATER "Radio-Mania" the feature picture at the United Theater tonight presents film faws something different in the way of entertainment. The story is a comedy based on Marconi's latest experiments of endevouring to talk to Mars. It tells of a young radio "nut" who wins two thousand dollars as prize for an essay and how he spends it all in building a radio machine with which he hopes to talk to Mars. Through the help of a girl he succeeds. Hi simulation realized, they live comfortably until—well, we might as well tell you—until he wakes up and then in utter disgust at the sham of it all he gives up his unpractical whims. But we're telling the whole story and that won't do, however, through the hero's inventive wares they "live happily ever after." Grant Mitchell, well known stage comedian, makes his debut into pictures in the title role and is supported by Margaret Irving, a recent Ziegfeld Follies beauty. Mr. Mitchell will be long remembered by the theater-going public for his exceptional work in such plays as "It Pays to Advertise," "A Tailor-Made Man," "The Champion" and his more recent success, "Kempy." And on the stage he inimitable Rube Miller and his famous Country Store. Lots of fun and lots of presents are his slogan for tonight. A 26 piece set Rogers silverware, phonograph record from Hammel's Music store, bums flour and many other valuable presents given away. Whiston at Montebello now have something to encourage them. The Bicknell well made a flow of oil a few days ago at a 200-barrel rate. Preparations are now under way to put the well on pump and try it out for commercial production at 4345. The well was drilled originally to 4444 and developed a little water trouble. Production figures on the Rideout Heights well, Whitley No. 6, show that the well averaged 1000 a day for the first ten days. The well has partially sanded up, but continues to make better than 500 barrels. The showing the Whitley deep sand well has made seems to assure Southern California of its next oil field. The Garner Corp. owns landowners' royalties in some of the best-producing properties in the So Calif. fields, and have established a record for prompt payment of monthly dividends to their shareholders. Their initial monthly dividend of 3 per cent has now been increased to 4 per cent each month, and they will establish a healthy reserve fund in addition, which will be distributed in the form of special dividends about three times during the year. Many Orange county people are already on the Garner list, and more are becoming interested weekly, according to Fredell & Macbeth, the local agents. R. H. Morey, one of the officials of the company, was in Anaheim early this week and will be located here during the next few weeks. Mr. Morey stated that due to the present low price of crude oil, landowners royalties could be purchased at exceedingly low prices. "No expense of any kind is attached to a landowners' royalty, and the pipe line company pays the proceeds into our bank each month." From my past experience in all branches of the oil business I am fully convinced that an investment in landowners' royalties is the safe and sure method for an investor to follow." Golf experts are discussing whether or not the golf ball should be lighter. We aren't interested in that angle of the game but something should be done to make it go straighter.
