CHEER UP! THE END IS IN SIGHT
WASHINGTON. Jan. 12—About the best news the American taxpayer has received from the federal government recently was the announcement of Gerrard B. Winston, Assistant Secretary of the Treasury, that in less than thirty years most of the public debt of the United States—now running well over $22,000,000—would be substantially retired.
Winston's announcement takes on added significance when it is pointed out that approximately one-third of the money collected by the government in taxes each year goes to pay the interest on that big debt. If the treasury's calculations are correct, and they have been made under the direction of Secretary Mellon himself, the public debt of this country in 1953 will be very small in comparison to the present figures; and the way will be definitely opened for a considerable reduction in Federal taxation.
Before the World War the public debt totalled only about $1,000,000,000. There were some 2 per cent bonds maturing in 1920, a 4 per cent loan of 1530, and certain Panama Canal bonds then outstanding. The public debt jumped at the beginning of the war, and the peak was reached in August, 1915, when the figure was more than $26,500,000.

"SEPTEMBER MORN"
PARTY IN AUGUST
LOS ANGELES, Jan. 12.—A moonlight bathing party referred to by Judge Summerfield as a "September morn party in August" featured the testimony today in the case of Mrs. Carolyn Sachs against Joseph Sachs, a wealthy Pasadena millinery dealer.
Mrs. Sachs said her husband told her of the alleged bathing party, which is said to have been held last August at Santa Monica.
"He said members of the party removed their clothes and went in bathing," Mrs. Sachs testified.
"You mean they went in without bathing suits?" Mrs. Sachs' attorney asked her.
"Yes," she replied, explaining her husband said he did not participate, but looked on.
Mrs. Sachs claimed her husband told the story in the presence of friends, including Clara Kimball Young, film actress, who was in court to corroborate Mrs. Sachs' testimony.
Sachs did not appear to contest the case.
BEAR CUB FOR PAL
WESTVILLE, Placer co., Jan. 12—"Yellowjacket" Swift and Link Blankenship after an exciting chase captured a three-week-old bear cub in the wood a few days ago.
The cub is sharing the cabin with its owners and is gaining weight on a milk diet. It now weighs 25 pounds and seemingly is entirely satisfied with its new home.

PLAN PAVING FROM MOUNTAINS TO SEA
A continuous paved highway from the mountains of eastern Orange county to the ocean at Long Beach, with the improvement of 17th st., Santa Ana, from the city limits to Westminster, became a possibility today with the filing with J. L. MeBride, supt. of county highways, of a petition to supervisors asking creation of a district for the improvement.
Seventy-five per cent of the owners of property in the proposed district have signed the petition. Fred English, who circulated the paper, declared.
It was estimated the paving would cost $150,000. The city council of Santa Ana already has before it the proposition of paying 17th st. within the city limits. Both projects within and without the city of Santa Ana seem certain of success.

FINE DRINK IS SYSTEM'S WRONG
YORKVILLE, Ohio. Jan. 12A unique drink, popular among local "hoolock hounds" is made by using sweet spirits of nitrite as a base. A small hole is chipped in a cake of ice. A channel is formed from the hole to the edge of the ice where a bottle or a can is placed. The spirits of nitrite is poured into the "ice pond." As it runs out through the channel the ether in the liquid is frozen. The product emptying into the container is credited with being pure alcohol.
