The public can answer it for themselves when viewing "The Acquittal," the striking new Universal mystery play, which opens its engagement at the California today. Probably half the people in the audiences, after they will see the strange optical trick by which, at night, a butcher's dial scale looks like a clock showing the hour of midnight, will have all their preconceived notions upset. This is what happened to winsome Claire Windsor in this remarkable picture. It wasn't an author's dream at all, it works just as well in real life as it does on the screen. Director Clarence L. Brown carefully scanned shop windows in Los Angeles to determine this fact for his own satisfaction. Also, photographs of famous trials, borrowed from the newspapers of Chicago, New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles, were the guides to almost every debated point; in the conduct of the trial scenes in the play, Charles Fürthmann, former deputy district attorney of Chicago, sat with the director throughout, watching every legal point involved, and every bit of court deportment. The news photographs, snapped during the various stages of important trials, showed how defendants sat, where the press tables were located, how reporters, bailiffs, judges, attorneys and juries sat, looked and acted.
