Miscellaneous FLORIDA BEACHES YIELD RARE BOOZE SEA BREEZE, Fla., Dec. 28—As the gay Yuletide season approaches, the number of persons appearing on the broad beach here with "binoculars" and "spades" increases—and there's a reason. Early one morning recently, bathers rubbed their eyes in amazement as they stumbled over founting cases of "Lewl-66." A few days later a carpenter, deserting his work on a beach front home, pulled from the surf a package containing four quarts of Gordon gin. At about the same time, a contractor, digging sand from the dunes, unearthed two-dozen bottles of German lager beer. Hundreds of persons have been poisoned throughout the country this year from drinking bad liquor, but not one has suffered any ill effects in this vicinity; for every bottle thus far unorked has been found to contain the "real goods," and usually bears the customs seals of foreign nations. At least, this has been the general observation of those interested. There are no bootleggers in the cities of Daytona, Daytona Beach, and Seabreeze. Whisky lovers apparently are not worried over this fact, so long as the deep blue sea stands by them and sends out its "live spirits" at high tide. The kaiser may leave Holland. Once before he demonstrated that he didn't have gumption enough to let well enough close. BURNING EYESHADE CAUSES VET'S DEATH NAPA, Dec. 28—A celluloid eyeshade, ignited by the flare of a match, inflicted burns from which Alfred J. Thomas, civil war veteran at the Yountville home, died a few hours later. Thomas was lighting his pipe while wearing the eyeshade. A filkering tongue of flame reached the inflammable shade and enveloped him in flames. STRONG WIRE MADE OF ROCK SALT. MOSCOW, Dec. 28—Manufacture of wire stronger than steel has been accomplished by the use of rock salt by Professor Joffe of the Petrograd Academy of Science. Professor Joffe's discovery of wire made from rock salt came after a series of extraordinary experiments in the mutability of metals by structural chemistry. Rock salt, the crystals of which normally begin to decay at a pressure of one and one-tenth pounds on 1-657th of an inch, resisted at a test a pressure of 330 pounds. Professor Joffe discovered that by submitting the rock salt to high heat pressure before the elementary crystals began to decay he arrested the decay by changing the structural arrangement of the atoms and molecules, and this change increased the durability and ductability of the substance 300 times. If the discovery of Professor Joffe can be applied to metals, it may mean a revolution in science. BETTER POULTRY MARKETING, PLAN A committee of the farm bureau will conduct a series of conferences with the heads of the poultry marketing associations of Southern California during the coming year for the purpose of smoothing out marketing differences which might exist between the individual producers and the associations. This was a result of a meeting called under the auspices of the seven southern counties poultry department in Los Angeles, Dec. 15, at which time the representatives of the marketing associations met with the department to discuss marketing conditions. The meeting was called particularly to discuss the advisability of adopting a trade name which would determine a standard, the idea being that all eggs in Southern California should come up to a certain grade and should be marketed under this trade name, whether sold by the Los Angeles or the San Diego associations, with particular reference to eggs coming out of cold storage. If the trade name had been adopted it was the idea of the poultrymen to introduce an extensive advertising campaign to influence a preference in favor of So. Calif. processed eggs. No definite action was taken at the meeting but it is hoped that this series of conferences which were arranged will bring about a better spirit of co-operation and ultimately result in egg standards of the different associations being correlated. There are no boo-leggers in the cities of Daytona, Daytona Beach, and Seabreeze. Whiskey lovers apparently are not worried over this fact, so long as the deep blue sea stands by them and sends out its "live spirits" at high tide. The kaiser may leave Holland. Once before he demonstrated that he didn't have gumption enough to let well enough alone. The strange part is that celebrity who seold America don't use some of their superior wisdom to benefit their own Europe. Macaroni At It's Best KITCHEN BOUQUET, a purely vegetable product, is in almost every pantry. Housewives know it is the secret of making good gravies and soups, but KITCHEN BOUQUET is equally good in preparing many other dishes. Try your next dish of macaroni prepared this way— BAKED MACARONI package macaroni, brakes in glaze teapouf salt quarta boiling water cup grated cheese smooth biscuits Milk glazer Cook macaroni in boiling salt water until soft and shaken with cold water. Overheat the cooked measure in hot water and cool down the mixture. Dust with butter and sprinkle with baster and churn into dish fat. Add kettle flask to milk and pour this over the mixture. Boil in boiler until thicken and serve immediately for dinner. KITCHEN BOUQUET PAYS $15.00 FOR HISTORIC JAIL WOODLAND, Dec. 28 — The old bridge which spanned Cache creek at Yolo has been purchased by Charles Gommill, junk dealer for a $5 bill, and the historic city jail at Yolo was sold today by Supervisor Shadrock Gladney to Roy Woodard for $15. Woodard expects to make a good profit on resale of the material. HUMORIST'S CABIN STOCKTON, Dec. 28 — Mark Twain's old cabin on "Jackass Hill," near Sonora, has been deemed to Tuolumne county as a memorial to the famous author by W. J. Loring and James A. Gillis. Gillis, who is known throughout the "mother lode" section as "Jim Gillis," lived in the cabin through a winter with Twain before he became famous. Loring is a mining capitalist. Why not maintain the right of free speech. Most of it is meaningless and harmless, and if it were not free a lot of people would take it seriously. Lodi Sentinel. PANTOMIME by J. H. Striebel ANNOUNCE A. BAYLISS BEGS TO ANNOUNCE Gasoline Service with particular reference to eggs coming out of cold storage. The meeting lasted from 1:30 until nearly 6 o'clock in the afternoon, the whole time practically being given over to discussion of phases of the marketing situation. During the afternoon the proposition of organizing an egg marketing association in Orange county was introduced but no action taken. Discussion brought out the fact that southern California is blessed with the best egg market in the world owing to the fact that we do not produce enough eggs to supply our own demand. Each year many carloads of eggs are imported but under the advertising and business methods practised in the past these outside eggs have been sold on par with the southern California egg which has received better care and is undoubtedly superior to the imported article. At the close of the meeting the incumbent officers were re-elected to serve the seven southern counties department for another year. Those officers being Hubert Howell of Santa Ana, president; V. R. Long, Baldwin Park, vice-president, and A. M. Stanley, secretary. MARTIN LEUSCHNER ATTENDS MEETING Martin Leuschner, son of Rev. and Mrs. H. Leuschner, of Anaheim, who is in his third year at U. of C., is attending the biennial anniversary of the Baptists of America which convened yesterday at Indianapolis. Young Leuschner wa seen there as the representative of the First Baptist church at Berkeley, and plans while in the east to visit relatives at Chicago and Kankakee, Ill. This is his first trip east. He expects to be in Anaheim by January 10. Plain Dealer Classified Ads Always Bring Results PANTOMIME by J. H. Striebel ANNOUNCE A. BAYLISS BEGS TO ANNOUNCE Gasoline Service DECEMBER AT 611 E. The household of Huls Doorn, the former kaiser's exile castle here, is about to lose one of its most important members, P. J. Peereboom. He has just been appointed by order of council to become burgomaster of Broek, in Waterland. This is an uncommon honor, for with his 27 years Peereboom will be the youngest mayor in the Netherlands. For the last three and one-half years Peereboom has acted as secretary to the court marshal, which is the title that the ex-kaiser's right-hand man still retains in this little fenced-off "phantom empire." Week's 29 Operated On For Appendicitis FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS TO BE ANNOUNCED LATER Many times, no doubt, you have seen the above headline in your newspaper. Very often it has told of some friend suddenly stricken with dread appendicitis. The newspapers, however, neglect to state that appendicitis is usually preceded by stomach trouble. They don't tell you that the afflicted person suffered frequent attacks of heartburn long before he went to the hospital. While heartburn is not always a sign of an inflamed appendix, it is always a warning that something is wrong. In many cases it results from indigestion, which is one of the predisposing causes of appendicitis. If you suffer from a burning, gnawing sensation in the stomach, excessive gas, sour stomach, nausea or other distress after eating, go at once and obtain a bottle of Smith Bros.' M. A. C., the guaranteed stomach treatment. This pleasant, harmless liquid rids the stomach of catarrhal mucus, allows inflammation, helps digestion and cleanses the bowels of poisonous waste matter.
