FALL DENIES HE RECEIVED MONEY
WASHINGTON, Dec. 27—Ex-secretary of the interior Fall, in a letter to the senate committee investigating the leasing of the naval oil reserves to private interests, denied categorically today that he had ever received money from persons to whom he leased oil lands.
"I never received any money, by loan or gift, from Harry F. Sinclair, or E. L. Doheny," Fall said in his letter.
Sinclair obtained the lease to Teapot Dome and Doheny the lease to the naval oil reserve in Elk Hills, Calif.
Fall declared, however, that he was advanced $100,000 by Edward B. McLean, Washington newspaper publisher, to assist in buying a ranch in New Mexico.
The loan was made on a personal note under an agreement whereby McLean within three years was to have the right to call the loan or enter into a partnership with Fall.
The money was used in purchasing the Harris ranch adjoinning Fall's.
Fall sent the letter, explaining his private financial affairs, because he is still unable physically to appear before the committee he said.
The fact that Mr. H. F. Sinclair came to Three Rivers with his wife and another lady and gentleman on December 31, 1921, or Jan. 1, 1922, just after I had taken possession of the Harris Home Ranch property and of the Harris-Brownfield cattle have incited some evil minded persons to the conclusion that I must have obtained money from Sinclair," Fall wrote.
"It should be useless for me to say that in the purchase of the Harris ranch or in any other purchase or expenditure, I have never approached E. L. Doheny
U. S. BOOTLEGERS COURT BLOCKED
ST. PAUL, Dec. 27.—U. S. Dist. Judges Wilbur F. Booth and John F. McGee jointly granted an injunction today preventing the operation of the "bootleggers' court" planned by the U. S. internal revenue department here to collect federal excise taxes on millions of dollars' worth of illegally manufactured liquor in the state.
The St. Paul "bootleggers' court" is similar to those to be established by the department throughout the country, under an old tax law which U. S. attorney general has ruled can be enforced in spite of the prohibition amendment to the constitution and the illegalizing of the liquor traffic.
Hundreds of convicted and suspected bootleggers had been summoned to appear before the St. Paul court, at which the collector of internal revenue presided, to show why they should not pay liquor taxes, as well as serve time and pay fines in the regular federal courts.
The St. Paul tax court was one of the first established by the internal revenue department.

DIXMUDE'S FATE MAY BE MYSTERY
PARIS, Dec. 27.—The fate of the giant dirigible Dixmude which has been missing nine days with 50 persons aboard, threatened today to become an unsolved mystery.
While hope for the ship has been abandoned, the ministry of marine has not yet given up hope that some or all of the crew and passengers may yet be found alive.
The optimism of the ministry of marines officials is not generally shared.
The Matin charges that the Dixmude left her base at Toulon to fly across the Mediterranean to Algers without notifyting the ministry of marine in Paris.
According to the Matin, the commander of the airship failed to seek advice as to weather conditions.
"Due to error in the fundamental organization of the marine ministry and lack of co-operation between the naval and aviation services and the meteorological service, the Dixmude set out, a blind plaything of the elements," said Matin.
The ministry of marine is instituting an official investigation to determine responsibility for the dirigible.

CABLE FROM WIFE
LOS ANGELES, Dec. 27.—Rupert Hughes, noted novelist and motion picture director today made public a cabelgram which his wife, Adelaide Hughes, had written just before she committed suicide on a steamer off the coast of China two weeks ago. The cablegram was not sent by her, and reads:
"Your wandering jewel is a total flasco as a lone traveller, darling. Now my ear has gone bust. Had treatment by a ship doctor, good treatment here. Advised to go forward. I sure I lost that ear, then we shall be one in that all else. Forwarded beautiful things from my palace to you. Duty should be low. Also three trunks old wearing apparel, manuscripts, embroideries previously declared. Send consular invoices Heart's whole love."

SUIT OF CLOTHES
FOUND ON BEACH
With only a suit of clothes, a bottle-half full of iodine, and a diary at their disposal to solve the mysterious appearance of these articles on the beach, police of Newport Beach today were attempting to locate a man, dead or alive, as the owner.
Though a coat and a pair of trousers were found near the high-tide land on the sand two miles east of Balboa palisades Christmas day, police were not notified until yesterday.
An investigation of papers and a diary found nearby disclosed the name of "J. Conyan Roark, Venice, Calif." The marks "J. C. R." were found on a collar.
Inability of Venice police to locate the man in Venice led Newport authorities to follow a suicide theory; it was learned here, though the latter admitted the possibility that the unidentified man had changed his clothes on the beach.

ATTEMPT ON LIFE OF JAP REGENT
By DUKE N. PARRY
(I. N. S. Staff correspondent)
TOKIO, Dec. 27—The Japanese cabinet, following a prolonged session, resigned late today as a result of an attempt to assassinate Hirohito, prince regent of Japan, as he was proceeding to the diet chambers to convoke the 48th diet session.
The prince regent was uninjured by the assassin's bullet.
Daisuke Naniwa, 25, who fired at the Japanese ruler, was captured immediately after the attempted assassination, being saved by the police from the menacing crowd which closed in about him.
His two companions, however, escaped.
The prince regent, after returning to Akasaka, detached palace, with his wounded chamberlain, proceeded to the diet chamber and delivered his speech, appearing to be the calmest person in the assemblage.
All newspapers in Tokio carrying the story were suppressed. The metropolitan chief of police, assuming full responsibility, resigned immediately.
The attempt occurred at Toronamon tram stop at 10:35 this morning. Rushing forward from a large crowd, which had been pressed back by police on guard at that point, Naniwa pulled a revolver from beneath the loose coille coat he was wearing and fired point blank at the prince regent, whose automobile was directly abreast the would-be slayer.
The crash of the shattered glass brought realization to the crowd that their ruler's life had been endangered, and Naniwa was threatened with death when the police rushed him to the safety of a police station.
According to the police who nation will defeat the universal suffrage measure which will come before this session of the diet.
