POEMS THAT LIVE
BRAHMA
If the red slayer thinks he slays,
Or if the slain think he is slan,
They know not well the subtle ways
I keep, and pass, and turn again.
Far or forgot to me is near
Shadow and sunlight are the same;
The vanished gods to me appear;
And one to me are shame and fame.
They reckon ill who leave me out;
When me they fly, I am the wings;
I am the doubter and the doubt,
And I the hymn the Brahmin sings.
The strong gods pine for my abode,
And pine in vain the sacred seven;
But thou, meek lover of the good!
Find me, and turn thy back on heaven.
—Ralph Waldo Emerson.
THE DESERTED HOUSE
Life and Thought have gone away
Side by side,
Leaving door and windows wide;
Carless tenants they!
All within is dark as night;
In the windows is no light
And no murmur at the door,
So frequent on its hinge before.
Close the door, the shutters close,
Or throe the windows we shall see.
The nakedness and vacancy Of the dark, deserted house.
Come away; no more of mirth Is here or merry-making sound.
The house was builted of the earth,
And shall fall again to ground.
Come away; for Life and Thought
Here no longer dwell,
But in the city glorious—
A great and distant city—have bought
A mansion incorruptible.
Would they could have stayed with us!
—Alfred, Lord Tennyson
