SOON START TALK FOR WILLS BOUT
By DAVIS J. WALSII
(I. N. S. Staff Correspondent)
NEW YORK, Dec. 24.—Exhorters for the Dempsey-Wills bout are lacking for immediate developments after Jan. 1, when William Muldoon is due to pass away as nominal head of boxing in New York state. The iron duke, they say, is all over and done with. He is a republican. In his place, one Edward Curry, democrat, is about ready to function. Frank Dwyer, republican, also will lose, his official hand in favor of an up-state democrat, it is said.
The new members, teamed up with William McCormack, chairman of the license committee will place the commission upon an all-democratic basis. They also will obviate and make null, Governor Smiths stock reply to all Dempsey-Wills inquiries, to-wit; that the New York state athletic commission was composed of men who were not of his appointment.
The inference there was that the governor of New York could issue no instructions to men he had not appointed. We have heard better replies but none more merry.
It appears now, however, that the policy of buck-passing may have been abandoned for one more adequate and suitable to the times. Boxing is in rather poor health in New York just at present what with bad decisions and natural diffidence of champions to risk their titles.
Something has to be done to reinstitute the game in popular favor and perhaps the appointment of an all-democratic commission may be a conscious effort in this direction. Tammy Hall wants boxing preserved and whatever Tammy wants, during a democratic administration, it invariably gets. There is too much money involved to allow the sport to pass on into the limbo of forgotten pastimes.
SARGUM SPROUTINGS
Sargum Sprout and all the rest of the Sprouts wish all that Have the time and inclination to read his junk, a very merry Christmas. This is a fine old world at any season for the year, that is, it is fine if we look for the good things in life, but the Christmas season is just a little more enjoyable than the rest of the year. People cut loose from themselves a little more on Christmas and take interest a little more in the other fellow. Anyway, we wish you many happy returns of the day and that the turkey and cranberry sauce and all the rest agree with your digestive apparatus.
SIX FIELDS WILL OPEN L. A. RACES
LOS ANGELES, Dec. 24.—They'll be off at Culver City tomorrow when six well filled fields of thoroughbreds will usher in the racing season in So. Cal.-and a crowd of 50,000 racing fans are expected to be on hand to greet this sport of kings.
More than 300 horses have been stabled at the Culver City track within the last four days and Bill Finn, racing secretary, anticipates no trouble in getting entries for the 100 days of racing.
The feature race for tomorrow will be the Christmas handicap which has attracted wide interest. The stake is $1200 and the distance a mile and a sixteenth. Some of the best horses in the west have been entered in the event.
With the opening of the track assured for tomorrow, Dick Ferris, its promoter was the recipient of many congratulations.
LOCALS DEFEAT SOAPMEN SUNDAY
By SARGUM SPROUT
A few of the faithful attendants the ball game out at the high school yesterday between the White Kings, an all profession aggregation, and the local Mcchants.. It was a real gain from start to finish. Anahe put on one of her old-time batting rallies in the third that was the first victory the locals had been able to put over in a long time.
Cliff Best was even better yesterday then the Sunday before This Boston Red Sox recruit surely has the stuff. His change pace has opposing batters completely baffled. His slow tempers start up to the plate with the same motion as his smoke builts. He had the White King big stickers looking absolutely foolish at times.
The locals played real ball yesterday and staked their pitch to a margin to work on... The second base combination was dinger yesterday.. Tiny Jack did not let anything through second and while Doty Bush errored by a nasty roller he made some bruise stops and throws.. I pulled about the best play of the day when he cut a hard grounder down a way back of the second-base bag and threw them runner out at first.
Art Ramage was back at first and played his usual good gag in the field. He hit just once safe while at the bat but he piled all hits he has missed getting for the last several weeks in that one blow. He picked out one of Elmer Meyers' slants just his liking and it sailed far over the plunge in left-center.. The last that ball was heard of bounded off the arch in Anbeach.
Elmer Meyers, the elongated Salt Lake hurler, was no sloughed on the hill.. He had one bad injury in the third.. He made less than six of the Anaheim swing at the empty spaces, he off set this by walking five...
Something has to be done to re-motivate the game in popular favor and perhaps the appointment of an all-democratic commission may be a conscious effort in this direction. Tammy Hall wants boxing preserved and whatever Tammy wants, during a democratic administration, it invariably gets. There is too much money involved to allow the sport to pass on into the limbo of forgotten pastimes.
Perhaps also a Dempsey-Wills about has been deemed an excellent medium toward restoring public confidence in the game. It would be the most popular move the commission could make, not because white men wish to see Dempsey lose. They merely stand for fair play to all and it is not that Harry Wills has been given the garlic.
The present commission has been guilty of sidestepping, straight-arming, reversing the field and all the broken field tricks in dating the Willis issue. It has made a political weapon of a great sport. Only a return of the policy of sport for sports sake will restore the game to its proper level.

“This track was built through Dick Ferris’ faith in God.”
E. N. Smith, of New York, will act as judge. He arrived in Los Angeles today. Arthur McKnight, well known in turf circles, will act as starter.
The new track was a scene of excitement today when several of the horses were put through workouts.

ZEV AND GREYLAG
NAMED FOR ASCOT
NEW YORK, Dec. 24. Horsemen in this district were enthusiastic in comments today over the announcement of W. S. Vosburgh, handleper of the jockey club, that Zev and Greylag, American thoroughbreds, had been named for the Ascot cup race to be run in England next summer. They were unanimous in agreeing that no worrisome representatives of the American turf could have been named for the Great Britain classic.
Zev established his right to the three year old championship last season in races with My Own, In Memoriam and Papyrus, the British champion. Greylag is one of the greatest weight-for-age thoroughbreds that American tracks have seen in many years. He went bad last season but is expected to come back as good as ever in 1924.

EITHER LIMIT OR BUILD AIRCRAFT
By WILLIAM K. HUTCHINSON (I. N. S. Staff Correspondent)
WASHINGTON, Dec. 24. A challenge to congress to either recommend a world conference for the limitation of aerial armaments or to authorize immediately the strongest air armada in history was issued today by Senator David I. Walsh, democrat, of Massachusetts.
Walsh's statement was prompted by recent activities of France and Italy toward increasing air house conference between President Coolidge and the Duke of Sutherland, air minister for Great Britain, at which the limitation of air armaments was discussed.
"Congress should either get behind a conference to limit aircraft, or else appropriate as much money as is necessary—hundreds of millions, even—to develop a fighting air armada second to none in the world," said Walsh.
America's air future appears hopeless, Walsh warned, unless the present policy is changed.
"Unless an air conference is called, congress should make our aerial defenses second to none in the world," Walsh said. "Such a policy would be a powerful notice to the world that unless all nations disarm, the United States will take its rightful place with war forces of the world. I believe, too, that such a notice would make some of the militaristic nations choose for economy's sake to limit aircraft. Such was the case, at least, when we built up our naval defenses."
The alternate to such a course, Walsh said, would spell danger for American interests.
If present conditions continue—namely, a steady improvement of their air forces by other nations, and a steady regretful deterioration of our air development, we must be prepared to confess to the world our incompetence with other nations.
