EXAMINE ALLEGED OBSCENE LETTERS
LOS ANGELES, Dec. 24.—Federal authorities, who have certain alleged obscene letters, which Ebler La Male, film director and dramatic school head, and Lou Harris, negro gambler and "king" of the Junarez, Mex., underworld, are said to have written to Mrs. Holen La Male accuser of her husband to sell her to Harris for half a million dollars were scheduled to hold a conference today and examine the contents of the letters.
Lucien Wheeler, department of justice agent in charge here, and C. E. Webster, chief postal inspector in Los Angeles, announced they would go into the La Male case thoroughly today. Wheeler has a large bundle of letters that are said to have been sent La Male from several persons figuring in the case.
The government's investigation also extended along various other anecdotes today as further efforts were made to establish whether or not Harris actually exists. La Male claims there is no rich person, while his wife declares La Male went so far as to point out a negro to her whom he said was Harris.
Among the letters Wheeler had was one apparently written Mrs. La Male by Harris, in which the language was said by Wheeler to be "obscene in the extreme." If Harris does not exist and La Male wrote the letters, it was declared that La Male was guilty of a federal law violation, the one governing the sending of such matter through the mails.
While the government pressed its investigation into the "wife sale" plot, and C. E. Bush, Mrs. La Male's attorney, made public other letters and notes in the case, it was understood today that La Male, who is in hiding at

HELD FOR MURDER
AFTER CARD GAME
DENVER, Colo., Dec. 24.—Alleging that his partner in a game of cards had been cheating, an ensuing argument resulted this morning in the arrest of Chas. Westbrook, a switchman from Pueblo, for the killing Sunday night of Alfred C. Tremlett, manager of a cleaning company. According to another member of the party Tremlett accused Westbrook of cheating. After the game broke up, the two men caught a tramway car where the argument was continued. Suddenly Westbrook drew a revolver, grappled with Tremlett and shot twice, killing him instantly.
A radio report of the murder was caught by Richard Tremlett, 14, a young son of the slain man who was listening in on his homemade set.
A pint of moonshine liquor was found on the floor of the car after the shooting.
