WRITE EPITAPHS ON N. Y. BOXING
By DAVIS J. WALSH
(L. N. S. Sports Editor)
NEW YORK, Dec. 20.—Sport critics are today writing the epitaphs of legalized boxing in New York state as a result of the colonel decision of a referee and two judges that Johnny Dundee had beaten Jack Bernstein for the junior lightweight championship on Monday night.
The decision is referred to as the worst of many bad ones rendered since the Walker law came into effect some four years ago.
It is said that one of the first remedial steps to be taken by the state athletic commission will be the demand upon Tex Rickard to drive the gamblers out of Madison Square Garden once and for all time. Gamblers were said to have been active in the garden Monday night.
Observers claim that the old Garden restaurant and bar, just off the main entrance, was thronged with these ghouls of the profession just before the main bout went on and that business was brisk. The rendezvous in question has ever been a happy hunting ground for the gambling element.
The effect was to send the odds of 8 to 5 on Bernstein tumbling to even money and at one stage of the proceedings to 6 to 5 on Dundee.
It is understood that Rickard has pledged himself to drive the gamblers out of the garden, as he did on the occasion of the Britton-Walker bout for the middleweight title, an affair that gave the odds fluctuate so sharply that the com-

HOPPE BILLIARD CHAMPION AGAIN
CHICAGO, Dec. 20.—Hoppe again ruled ball line hilards as world's champion to a winner over Walker Cochran of San Francisco 1500 to win in their match to break the which they shot in the international tournament in New York.
The champion's heavy adage, piled up in the first blocks, stood him in good stance the concluding third last when Cochran slid smoothly stroke while Hoppe was trying his. The California shine his best form of the match, ing 725 while the champion collecting his final 500.
Cochran's average for the block was 421 1-17 agen Hoppe's 29 7-17. Their averages for the match with Hoppe, 44 4-34; Cochran, 5-34.
From these figures it is evident that in the closing in Cochran was stroking at a but little under that which the title, $1000 purse, diagonal and share of the gate Hoppe.
Willie Hoppe, Jr., a blond of five, watched his father though it cost him as his struggle against the sandman his father had against atmoshe conditions and a stroke o-form.
Muggy weather gave both ers trouble, as the spheres sweating and not easy to co Hoppe had runs of 53, 20, 44 before he settled into the pace at which she watch waished. Cochran stroked correctly in most of the seven innings and with 10 his run, reduced by 225 to 564.
The effect was to send the odds of 5 to 5 on Bernstein tumbling to even money and at one stage of the proceedings to 6 to 5 on Dundee.
It is understood that Rickard has pledged himself to drive the gamblers out of the garden, as he did on the occasion of the Britton-Walker bout for the middleweight title, an affair that saw the odds fluctuate so sharply that the commission declared all bets off.
"Such decisions give the game a black eye," Rickard is quoted as saying, "and any time the game gets a black eye, I get one too."
When asked if he would match Dundee and Bernstein again, Rickard gave vent to an emphatic "never; there might have been a riot on Monday."
At that, the dipt of collusion is predicated by the fact that some competent and unbiased observers have declared that they saw nothing wrong with the decision.
Mantine, it is understood that the commission is disposed to take a poll of educated opinion on the controversy. It is said to be asking for suggestions on the rendering of decisions in the future and one of them coming from many sources, demands the abolition of judges and the constitution of the referee as the sole arbiter as in the days of the Frawley law.
The judges on Monday night were E. G. Becker and "Harlem Tommy" Murphy, great lightweight of another era. They voted for Dundee, Jack O'Sullivan, the referee, cast the sole vote for Bernstein.

I. N. S. Sporth Editor
NEW YORK, Dec. 20—Behind the project to match Harry Wills and Bartley Madden at Mallison Square Garden practical box minds are pleased to note a studied gesture toward the establishment of a precedent that will make possible a Dempsey-Wills bout later.
This altogether worthy enterprise is now taboo in Manhattan rings by tacit and unspoken agreement, the rich sepia of Mr. Wills' frontpiece being the reason.
Mr. Wills has never been permitted to fight a white man in Manhattan proper since the Walker law went into effect. On occasion they have tossed him a cancasian pushover within the limits of New Jersey and shudderingly covered their sensitive eyes. A few months ago they even ventured as near as Long Island City with the terrible details of Homer Smith went down and lay tragically still from a rude push on the chest.
"Give a man an inch and he will take a mile" is an old way. Having beaten white men in New Jersey and Long Island City, with now wishes to boat Bartley Madden at Madison Square and the New York State Athletic Commission will be asked to give its sanction proceedings.
If it does so, it will loophole for a possible DeWitt Wills match for the heavy championship of the work summer.
That, at least, is the introduction by those worthless wish to promote Wills inious money before the crutch wheel chair claim him at own.
