DAILY GREETING TO OUR READERS
“How shall I work today?” O soul of mine!
Today stands on her threshold, girt to lead
Thy feet to life immortal; strive with fear;
Deep pitfalls strew the way; take heed; take heed!
—Augusta Moore
MURDERS FRIGHTFULLY COMMON
Homicides are frightfully common throughout the United States. Murders by the thousands are committed in this country annually. The number of capital crimes steadily increases. Many murders are committed in cold blood, without any extinguating circumstances. Many homicides are by mere youths.
This disregard of the preciousness of human life has become a menace to the nation. It must be combatted, systematically and effectually, or it will become more and more of a stigma and more and more of a peril. Sufficient stress is not given moral training of children, in the home and in school. Not enough is said about the abhorrence of murder. Children should be taught to respect and to protect human life. They should be taught to look upon murder as a crime superlatively horrible. Systematic, persistent moral training should go far toward counteracting “crime waves” and murder deluges.
The “bloc” in Congress is blocking legislation. The serviceability of this is open to question.
AUTO DEATH RATE HIGH IN CALIFORNIA
California leads all the states in some things for which it has every reason to be proud. But there is one distinction which this state has for which it has no reason to be proud. It is well to emphasize this distinction, so that Californians may be impelled to work for reforms that will take this state’s name off the dark list.
California has the highest rate of killings by automobiles of any of the 37 states in the census registration area of the United States. The rate of automobile deaths in this state is 26 per 100.

California has the highest rate of killings by automobiles of any of the 37 states in the census registration area of the United States. The rate of automobile deaths in this state is 26 per 100,000 of population. Los Angeles leads all the 67 cities reporting having a rate of 29.5 per 100,000.
This denotes a situation startling enough. The sooner Californians face this problem in all its gravity, the better. Much of this startling loss of life is preventable. The same is true of the 11,665 automobile killings last year in the census registration area, composing 85 per cent of the territorial area of the United States. There is far too much criminal carelessness in driving, in this state and in other states. There are too many incompetent persons holding driver's license. There is far too much violating or evading of safety laws and ordinances.
President Coolidge has spoken and his countrymen and the world are assessing him, in the light of his message.
The "clean sweep" in politics is in order, now that women are participating actively in matters political.
The multiplication of suicides is an indictment of this age. It is too strenuous. There are too many complexities. Life is too intricate.

The Secret of Good Baked Beans
KITCHEN BOUQUET does for baked beans what it does for gravies—greatly adds to their flavor and improves their color.
In Boston, where the preparation of all kinds of beans has reached a perfection that is the despair of all other sections, KITCHEN BOUQUET is most liberally used.
Preparing for the oven, add a tablespoonful to a quart of beans. Prepare your beans the Boston way.

What Editors Are Saying
MALE TEACHERS SCARCE—Santa Barbara News
Pasadena has just added three men to the teaching force of the city schools and with the announcement is the statement that these men were secured with great difficulty, as there are few men teachers available.
The teaching profession all over the country, which formerly was largely made up of men, has fallen almost entirely into the hands of women. There is little to indicate an immediate change in this condition, as the proportion of women to men in practically all the teachers' colleges is about in the ratio of ten women teachers to one man.
There was a time when the low salaries paid to teachers turned men away from the schools. They could do much better in other lines financially. But with the increase in salaries of school teachers during the past few years, this situation has changed.
The school principals receive high salaries, while the salaries of the teachers generally, both for men and women, are fully equal to those paid in the business world, particularly when it is recalled that the teachers in most places work only ten months each year and are required to be at their desks only five days each week.
It is an economic principle that demand brings supply. If the demand for men teachers is as urgent as the school authorities of Pasadena indicate, there ought to be an increase soon in the available number of men teachers.
From the universities a constant stream of young men trained in the various special branches of science as well as in English and mathematics is going out. It would seem that this source ought to furnish the material for the schools.
Surely the openings for such men, if they are thoroughly equipped for their work, are numerous in every part of the state. Instead of flocking into overcrowded professions or seeking jobs at comparatively small pay in big corporations, it would seem that these young men with fresh sheepskins would do well to look into the school department of the state.
