RAISE $305 FOR K. OF C. CHARITIES
Knights of Columbus and their families heartily enjoyed the open meeting last night under auspices of the Christmas charities committee, which was a successful financial affair as well, $305 having been realized.
Miss Leslie Gaynor, of Los Angeles, opened the eprogram with a reading, "The Other Wise Man," of Catholic charities of this diocese, fcatholic charities of this diocese, talked on the workings of the bureau, saying that the local bureau is the largest private charity organization west of Chicago. During the year $93,00 was spent for placement of children, alone, and that is but one of the four departments.
The Concordia club of 30 voices sang Christmas songs and W. J. M. Heinze, chairman of the local K. C. charity committee, outlined the work for the coming year. It is planned to care for the boys at St. Catherine's school; assist at the county hospital; care for 19 private families in Anaheim; prepare a tree for the Mexican children of the sugar factory district. The knights also presented the Paperttes with a substantial donation for the Community Christmas tree.
J. D. Martin, of the local council, auctioned the articles donated for charity work, and no little merriment resulted when one chicken and the sack in which it was brought was sold and resold eight times, finally going to Anthony Kern, of the Reliable Transfer Co., for $32.

Storm Arises As Hughes Stands Pat
(By George R. Holmes)
(I. N. S. Staff Correspondent)
WASHINGTON, Dec. 20.—Secretary of State Hughes curt rejection of Soviet Russia's latest olive branch and his refusal to even consider a joint conference to adjust differences between the countries provided the so-called progressives of the 68th congress with another issue upon which they planned today to assault administration policies.
The first step was taken this afternoon when Senator Lead, Republican of North Dakota, introduced a resolution calling upon the secretary of state to furnish the senate with a mass of information concerning its Russian policy.
It particularly requested Hughes to report whether "any secret agreements, confidential understandings, diplomatic arrangements or contracts" exist between the state department and foreign nations "with a view to prohibiting, restricting or retarding trade" between Russia and the United States.

WASHINGTON, Dec. 20.—The navy's program for purchase of land on the Pacific and Atlantic coasts for the development of more establishments and the sale of land no longer needed was presented for congressional approval today in a bill introduced by Representative Britton, Republican of Illinois, a member of the house naval affairs committee.
Expenditures totalling $27,32,950 were proposed for improvements on the San Francisco Bay, to be spread over 20 years. These include: navy base at Alameda, $19,640,000; improvements at Mare Island Navy Yard, $5,857,550; extension of coal depletion, $2,000,000; marine depot of supplies $335,000.
"All military experts agree that the navy's greatest weakness is the lack of a base on the Pacific coast." Britton declared. Uncle Sam in the Pacific, occupies the position of a man with many automobiles and not a single garage.
