Miscellaneous TENDERLOIN CZAR MIND IS BLASTED HARRISBURG, Dec. 11.—Lonious mental malady has brought a tragic denouncement in the adventurous career of former Police Inspector John F. Dwyer. Once feared as the "Czar of the Tenderloin," Dwyer inspired a wholesome respect in the hearts of the roughest and toughest customers in New York's underworld — when that term meant the most. The "tamer of gunmen," it is revealed, is now an inmate of Kings Park asylum—the splendid physique and forceful personality that cowed thugs and desperadoes now were mere shadows. Dull-eyed apathy now supplanting the dangerous glint that once spoke a subtle warning to those who crossed him. Dwyer cannot even dress himself now, it is said—a piteous travesty on the nimble wit and smoothly co-ordinated abilities that marked him in the heyday of his police career. Suffering with a brain disorder which hospital authorities believe to be caused by a tumor, Dwyer was recently taken to the asylum by his two sons when associates noticed he was no longer responsible for his actions. FAST TALKER AVOIDS PENALTY NEW YORK, Dec. 11.—A penal police have been conducting a campaign for stricter obedience to the traffic and parking laws. Usually two offenses are allowed before the transgressor is fined. The first two times he is merely admonished. One of those whose automobile was targeted was J. L. L. Kuhn, a bus contractor. Kuhn talks at a rapid fire rate. Carrying the red tag which requires reporting at the mayor's office, Kuhn brushed past police officers where dry agents have a waiver where dry agents have a waiver where dry agents have a waiver where dry agents have a waiver where dry agents have a waiver where dry agents have a waiver where dry agents have a waiver where dry agents have a waiver where dry agents have a waiver where dry agents have a waiver where dry agents have a waiver where dry agents have a waiver where dry agents have a waiver where dry agents have a waiver where dry agents have a waiver where dry agents have a waiver where dry agents have a waiver where dry agents have a waiver where dry agents have a waiver where dry agents have a waiver where dry agents have a waiver where dry agents have a waiver where dry agents have a waiver where dry agents have a waver where dry agents have a waver where dry agents have a waver where dry agents have a waver where dry agents have a waver where dry agents have a waver where dry agents have a waver where dry agents have a waver where dry agents have a waver where dry agents have a waver where dry agents have a waver where dry agents have a waver where dry agents have a waver where dry agents have a waver where dry agents have a waver where dry agents have a waver where dry agents have a waver where dry agents have a waver where dry agents have a waver where dry agents have a waver where dry agents have a waver where dry agents have a waver where dry agents have a waver where dry agents have a waver where dry agents have a waver where dry agents have a waver where dry agents have a waver where dry agents have a waver where dry agents have a waver where dry agents have a waver where dry agents have a waver where dry agents have a waver where dry agents have a waver where dry agents have a waver where dry agents have a waver where dry agents have a waver where dry agents have a waver where dry agents have a waver where dry agents have a waver where dry agents have a waver where dry agents have a waver where Dryers ELECTRICITY HITS BOLL WEEVIL ATLANTA, Ga., Dec. 11.—Belief that electricity can be harnessed and used in the extermination of the greatest evil to Southern agriculture today—the dreaded boll weevil—was expressed by Samuel Hibben, manager of the research department of the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company, who was in Atlanta recently conducting a study of the boll weevil mance in this section. "Time'll come when 'bottled' electricity will raise flowers, grow grass, sprout seeds and cause practically any botanical element to germinate," said Hibben, "but dearer still to the heart of the southern cotton planters are the possibilities of yoking electricity to the gigantic task of stamping out the weevil." During the last year research work conducted by Hibben has resulted in the actual growing of certain flowers and vegetables by the sole process of electric induction as a substitute for the rays of the sun nature's own process. With electricity still in its infancy, as applied to plant germination, and with the success of the experiments so far conducted far beyond expectations, Hibben contends the belief plants will actually sprout, grow and mature by electric attraction, is no longer a theory but an accomplished fact. Before Mayor Hoverter recovered from his surprise Kuhn was gone. IS YOUNG INDUSTRY The electric incandescent lamp recently celebrated its forty-fourth birthday. The commercial manufacture of the lamp was begun in 1881 and 20,000 lamps were produced the first year, while last year the total produced for the United States alone amounted to 500,000,000. GIRL BOOTLEGGERS AVOID DETECTION BOSTON, Dec. 11. That there are girl bootleggers—and many of them—was shown here recently, by Mrs. Mary McKinnon, who has just finished her season's work as a special officer of the Metropolitan district. One thing about girl bootleggers is that they carry their wares where dry agents have a hard time in finding them. One favorite place of the girl bootleger is woman's "First National Bank." Others conceal liquor in their handbags, while some carry large supplies in front of their dresses. Sometimes a girl won't carry any contraband with her, but will take an order from a man and will then arrange to deliver the liquor later. Mrs. McKinnon, who patrols the Esplanade, has arrested but two girls for bootlegging. CLAIM BRITISH DRUGS IMPURE LONDON, Dec. 11. That one prescription in every five made up by drug stores in England is inaccurate is the charge made by the ministry of health analysis experts in their annual report just issued. Of 429 prescriptions analyzed 96, or about one in five, were found to be inaccurate, as compared with 29 out of 178 in 1921; the report says. Coupled with this statement of the apparent carelessness of the English drugs store clerk, is the disquieting information to the Britisher that the percentage of adulteration of drugs increased from 6.7 per cent to 7.3 per cent during 1922. Adverse reports were made on 426 samples out of 5363 samples taken. PANTOMIME by J.H. Striebel HONOLULU JAP SLAIN BY BOAR HONOLULU, Dec. 11. Gashed deeply in the leg by a wild boar which he was hunting. Sheehi-buro Umazo, a section overseer of the Hawaiian irrigation Co., bled to death in the jungles above Walpio Valley, Island of Hawaii, while his companion went for help. Umano's dogs attacked the boar in thick undergrowth, and as the boar emerged Umaze was directly in his path. Daybreak disclosed he had bled to death during the flight, a large artery having been severed by the long tusks of the boar.
