SIN REALITY TO BE CONSIDERED
Summary of sermon by Dr. J. A. Geissinger at the Methodist White Temple Sunday morning:
A fine, upstanding young man recently told me that he was trying to do right, but that he did not see how the death of Christ had anything to do with that fact. I wish to think with you this morning upon the question thus raised.
At once it becomes clear that life is a moral battle. If a young man lives uprightly he will have to make an effort to do so. A garden left to itself runs to weeds. And in the same manner a life left to drift runs to noxious growths. The notion that if you let the heart of man alone it will bring forth only good is unwarranted by the facts. Sin is a reality to be reckoned with. That is the significance of cash registers, auto theft insurance, burglary insurance, bank examiners and bonding companies.
The second fact that I wish you to think of is that while many agencies and influences help man in his moral battle, such as customs, the influence of good men and women, and education, not all other influences combined equal in moral value the influence of the life and teachings of Jesus. Lecky, the rationalist and no follower of Christ, says that those three years of ministry in Galilee have done more for the regeneration of the human race than all the philosophies in the world. Paul rightly held that in Christianity the spirit of a new life came into the world that meant deliverance for all who would.
The New Testament won its way in an open field to the supreme place among books helpful to man's higher life, and today we may place no other group of books alongside of it.
Nothing surpasses in spiritual splendor the influence of Jesus upon those peasants and slaves of his day. Think how they climbed thrones, stood before kings, lived masterfully in an untoward world, lives full of peace and gladness and triumph. Think of how that life has continuously inspired men and women since then. Jesus has touched men's hearts with hope and they have

Nothing surpasses in spiritual aplendor the influence of Jesus upon those peasants and slaves of his day. Think how they climbed thrones, stood before kings, lived masterfully in an untoward world, lives full of peace and gladness and triumph. Think of how that life has continuously inspired men and women since then. Jesus has touched men's hearts with hope and they have gone forth to build cathedrals, paint canvases, indite oratorios, found states, uplift heathen, reclaim wildernesses and redeem the earth. He has fired the hearts of the humble, but also the mightiest among the mighty, nor is there any diminution of his power. He is still the supreme source of spiritual comfort, courage and hope for the human race.
My young friend freely admitted this. I think every fair-minded man and woman must. But what has the death of Christ to do with all this? Everything Had there been no death none of this power would be at our command. The question we are thinking about is not how does the death of another help us, but how does the death of Jesus Christ help us? Now if Jesus had faltered and turned back at Gehsemane that would have been the end of his life for all time. His death was the seal upon his life and gave point and power to every good word he had spoken. He was eaten up with a zeal for righteousness. He loved mankind unto death. His death made his great glowing words live. His death as much, even more than his words or life, are part of his self-giving. It is the total effect of his life and death that is re-demotional. They belong together. He lived and died that we might live. Once the emphasis was too much on the death apart from the life. Apart from the life the death has no meaning. Now we are wont to place too little emphasis upon the death, and to think of the Golden Rule and the sermon on the Mount. But you can no more understand Jesus by his teachings alone than you can understand Abraham Lincoln by thinking of his rise simply to the White House. His martyrdom rounds out his life and reveals the soul of it. But Jesus' death was not a martyrdom. He laid down his life consciously that he might bring us to God and there never has been any other death quite like his.
Nevertheless, we shall not understand the death of Christ in its spiritual meanings unless we think of it as the supreme example of vicarious suffering. This young man's trouble was that he could not see how the suffering of one heroic man, of one pure life, could break the force of evil.
TRIAL IN ITALY
LONDON, Dec 11—Benito Mussolini, prime minister and virtual dictator of Italy, is on trial before the Italian people and must watch his step or someone else will have his job. It is not necessary, however, that he should do anything precipitate to establish his position, for the Italians will give him plenty of time.
This summary of Italy's attitude toward her present national leader and outstanding statesman, was given by Gen. Giuseppe Garibaldi, grandson of General Garibaldi, the famous Italian liberator, and himself a noted soldier of the Italian army. Although not personally affiliated with the Italian government, General Garibaldi expressed himself as friendly towards it.
"Mussolini is not only the leader of the majority of the Italian people," said General Garibaldi, "but he is also the governmental symbol of a new national spirit in Italy. So long as he leads the nation in accordance with that spirit, he will continue successful. If he lags behind—or if he goes too far ahead—his position will not be secure.

TRIPLETS' DEATH BRINGS NEW LAW
DENVER, Dec 11—A determined fight to secure passage at the next general assembly of the Colorado legislature of laws to protect maternity is expected to result from the recent death of triplets within two hours of their birth to Mrs. Conrad Foos, a Russian woman beet field worker.
With the slogan "Colorado must be made safe for mothers," the Denver Business and Professional Woman's club, the Denver Woman's club, and the legislative council of the Colorado Federation of Women's clubs, have launched a campaign to make him possible a repetition of the tragedy that occurred recently Kersey, in northern Colorado.
Mrs. Foos, hurrying from the beet fields where she had worked all day, gave birth unattended, to three children. The mother and infants were rushed to a Kersey hospital, where all the children died. Mrs. Foos recovered.
A resolution presented at a meeting of the Business and Professional Women's club will be transmitted to Governor Sweet, with a request he order an investigation to determine why "Mrs. Foos, in her hour of danger, was denied consideration which, under the law, would have been accorded a horse, cow, or other domestic animal in like plight."
tyrdom rounds out his life and reveals the soul of it. But Jesus' death was not a martyrdom. He laid down his life consciously that he might bring us to God and there never has been any other death quite like his.
Nevertheless, we shall not understand the death of Christ in its spiritual meanings unless we think of it as the supreme example of vicarious suffering. This young man's trouble was that he could not see how the suffering of one heroic man, of one pure life, could break the force of evil and help the guilty. But there is tendency in the universe that is so constant that it may be called a law that the innocent suffer with and for the guilty. And this vicarious suffering is the most powerful influence spiritually in the kingdom of man.
When we think of vicarious sacrifice we generally think of the extreme cases, the death of the fireman in his work of rescue, the refusal of the physician to flee from the plague and the consequent giving of his life that others may live, the soldier's dying in the trench or in No-Man's Land that the world may be safe for others. But this principle runs down thru the ordinary work of the world. What a sordid place this world would be if every man was born on saving his own skin and nothing else, if every man counted his own life only as dear unto himself. It is the heroisms of everyday life and its sacrifices that save life from meanness.
After parenthood the most beautiful and real thing in the world is the effort of the passing generation to help the oncoming youths into the inheritance of the race at an advantage.
It is after this manner that we must think of the death of Jesus. We must rid our minds of the old explanations of his death which make it an effort to appease the wrath of an angry God, to satisfy an infinite justice, to prop up a tottering moral government that cannot easily forgive sin, or to set us an example to influence us. These theories may have some truth in them, but we do better to start from another angle altogether. The great objective that Christ had was not to get 'God right, but to get us right. He came to help us into faith and greatness. His purpose was our redemption and he went thrush with his purpose in spite of hatred and opposition and death itself. He wrought and taught and lived and died that we might live. Paul had it right: "The Son of God who gave His life for me."
Not everyone has been uplifted by the heroesms of others, but if vicarious suffering, of which Christ's is the supreme example, will not reach us, nothing will. Elizabeth Stuart Phelps tells us how her father cured her of lying. She told her first lie when she was seven years old. Her father came home, weary from a hard speaking tour. But he was not too tired to sit down with this moral problem to find its solution. He told her of the injury doing to everyone and of the manner of suffering it brings on the liar and then after he had made the truth clear to his little girl, he broke down and wept because he had himself been hurt. Mrs. Phelps said that that was the hardest of all to bear, and then there was planted in her heart forever a hatred of duplicity and a devotion to veracity. God is our Father and He deals with us after the same manner.
We must not avoid the cross. Let it speak to our hearts of the subtlety and deadiness of sin; of the love, the suffering love of God until it brings us to penitence and moral renewal. For if you gaze on the cross long enough you will see that it brings home to your heart the love of God back of all things and under all life, and that fact is the most desecrative fact known to human experience. And thus it is that the death of Christ, the cross of Christ, becomes the law, the light, the truth, the way, the life of the higher life of mankind.
REDUCE HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE
COLUMBUS, Dec. 11. That mortality may be reduced by teaching of the public how to control high blood pressure is the belief voiced by Dr Martin A Martensen of Battle Creek, Mich., in an address here.
He declared that persons should be suspicious of chronic cases of morning headaches, nervous disorders, and in later life, dizzy spells, vertigo, palpitations and chest pains.
Careful watch on the arterial tension of youthful patients was urged by Dr. Martensen, who asserted that research prompted his belief that "there may be more than a little truth in the theory that high blood pressure is often attributable to heredity."

EUROPEANS URGE
U. S. INTERVENTION
PARIS, Dec. 11.—An unconfirmed report was circulated in diplomatic circles today that certain European powers will bring pressure upon the United States to intervene in Mexico if the Mexican rebels are successful in overthrowing the Obregon government.
French officials recalled that France recognized the Obregon government because she wished to "consolidate" with America. It is likely that France will refuse to recognize any government that overthrows President Obregon by force of arms.
Great Britain and France are watching developments in Mexico with great anxiety, owing to the large amounts of British capital invested there.
Most of Mexico's railway and land loans were raised in Paris and London.
For 15 years the holders of these bonds drew no dividends. Payments started again last August, but today the bondholder were notified that the next coupon should be held up "pending developments."
This announcement creates much excitement among small bond holders who are calling upon their governments to urge the United States to intervene before it is too late.

"CHARITY CURE"
FOR DRY VICTIMS
KANSAS CITY, Dec. 11—Drun addicts must not be encouraged that charity will offer them t cure at any time; they should be made to know that all must at some time pay for this treatment but the sincere penniless should not be turned away from the door.
This is the spirit which leaders in the movement to establish a drug sanitarium have adopted at the foundation of their campaign.
A "charity cure," they believe would only encourage the drug victims to believe they could be cured at any time, and in the knowledge of this, they might, af- ter once being cured, fall back into their old habits, again to be cured gratis whenever they felt so inclined.

NO DIVORCE BUT WANTS ALIMONY
WATERLOO, Iowa, Dec. 11. J. W. Thompson, district court clerk here, believes he has found the All-American "Dumb Dora" in a woman who applied at his office for alimony recently.
"Have you a divorce?" Thompson asked.
"Oh, no," the woman replied naively.
"Are you expecting to get a divorce?" Thompson pressed her.
"I'm not particular," the woman answered. "I read in the paper that you were disbursing all-money and I thought I would come and get some."
Clerk Thompson managed to steer the woman out of the office before he passed under a total eclipse of hysteria.
